Hey all
Got a couple of test shots on the GP40s from the 1973 movie Runaway!
Still got somemore to do but I'm just winging it on the road # as just about all the D&RGW sites state that the Ski Train at the time the film was done would have been powered by GP 40s.
The hood graphics are not 100% but are close and required some major playing in photo shop.Gary S

RE: Sierra Pacfic GP40 test shots

Hey Gary, I surfed around and found some numbering info for you. See below.
D&RGW GP30 3011, along with D&RGW GP35 3032, was painted as "Sierra Pacific" (black with orange lettering) for use in the filming of the 1973 made-for-TV movie "Runaway!"; D&RGW GP40 3081 was also painted as "Sierra Pacific" (silver with red lettering). You can see this info here---in top section of page

Extracting images from the movie on DVD?

Hey Gary, looks like you have the logo spot-on for the 'Sierra Pacific'. That's pretty much what I remember from seeing the movie three decades ago. There's already been a fair amount of discussion of this mysterious 1973 movie 'Runaway'.

Okay, so I decided to renew my search for a VHS or DVD copy of this movie. As it turns out, a new search on eBay turned up some success. I have managed to score both a DVD and VHS of the 1973 version of "Runaway'. Got a DVD copy of the 1979 'Disaster on the Coastliner', too. I just hope that they are of reasonable picture quality when they are delivered. My question is this; Given that I have a DVD player in my computer, does anyone have any ideas on how to download still frames from a DVD into a graphics format? Do I need a 'video grabber' card or similar device, connected to an external DVD player or monitor? Seems like converting the digital DVD image to television-quality VGA (640x480 pixels) then back to digital, will degrade the quality of the image. Or can I save frames directly from the internal DVD player without going through conversion to external VGA? If this can be made to work, maybe I can post some single-frame video grabs for the use of others in their modeling, assuming that such a thing is technically feasible.

I worked off that pic posted of the "hero" loco a couple days back and have DL'd a couple of GP30s & 35's in similar D&RGW configuration and as you can see I've got the 40,though considering the reflection on the Hollywood paint job I may tone the silver down just a bit as that paint job on a sunny day would blind the crew running it,any crews passing it and any one else for miles around.
As to your screen cap question,I just asked "She who must be obeyed" and my wife said that if you have the DVD drive/player she thinks all you need is some sort of vid editing software, might be time for a trip to the local CompUSA.
BTW since the flick ain't commercially avalible I'm half tempted to see about forwarding you a blank tape:)Gary S

RE: Extracting images from the movie on DVD?

Hey Gary,
Ok, so the VHS tape of "Runaway" really does exist; The wife and I played it tonight. We haven't yet got the DVD to play, although I did get the other DVD 'Disaster on the Coastliner' to play. Your 'Sierra Pacific' Skin jobs on the GP35, GP30 and the GP40 are pretty close to the movie. The movie also showed a set of five 'Ski Train' passenger cars in Grande Gold lettered for 'Sierra Pacific'. The Rio Grande apparently owned a steam generator car constructed from a locomotive tender, and that is also in the movie. If I can figure out all the software, I'll try to get some screen grabs of this stuff.

Hey I figured if I can fly Thunderbird 1&2 and the Firefox in FS2K2 why not some Hollywood rails for MSTS?
Actually at the moment I've got that rather irritating GSI bulkhead flatcar that just refuses to convert properly but IIRC back some time ago somebody did post an activity that required you to leave a siding and chase down a runaway, it used default locos & cars so if I can get a gander at the coaches I'll probably just skin up the remaining GP35 and cars and if someone wishes to replace the defaults with the Si Pac stock they can.Gary S
