Does anyone know the name of the movie about a train whose brakes fail and it has to get stopped by a big silver train that drives up behind it, couples to it and slows the runaway down. Its heading towards a terminal station not a through one And somewhere near the end they have this big old switcher waiting in a siding and as soon as the 'runaway' passes the junction out pops this old switcher going like the wind to catch the run away. It's really very vague I know, but that's all I know about it.Does anyone have an idea of the movie I'm talking about, know what it's called or know where I can find out what it's called? Thanks very much.

RE: Train Movie

I believe it was a t.v. movie about 12-15 years ago called the "runaway" about a ski train in Colorado returning to Denver and it happens to be the engineers last run before he retires.Tim

Right on the title, "Runaway" but your a bit off on the date more like 29 30 years ago It was about 73/74 IIRC the first of the ABC Mystery Movies,Made for TV, Filmed on the DRG&W, and in my book plausable reason for the train becoming a runaway becuse they don't tell you how it became a runaway, they just list off some reasons to check.
some where in my boxes of stuff I've got a copy of Trains with a pic of the "new diesel" as they called it, in the water soluble silver with the red diamond on it's side.
Interestingly enough the the film that followed the next week was popular enough that it came back as series that lasted quite awhile and had at least one spin off series.
Can anyone guess (hint the lead was a major star)Gary S

RE: Train Movie

Well, another movie where a locomotive couples up to the caboose of the runaway train is Atomic Train or something. The Russians slip a nuke into one of the boxcars, somebody finds out, tells the RR authority and they try to stop the train. The locomotive trying to slow the train down was an SD45 I believe and the runaway train was headed by an Santa Fe B32-8W I think.Looks Like a Pony Train Movie – image 2 RUNS LIKE A STALLION

For a CBS made for TV movie, it wasn't that bad.
-Sam
P.S.-About the SD45, it was actually two of them if I am indeed correct.

RE: Train Movie

Sorry the SD45's were not used on Atomic Train. One was a constructed model full scale and the other was one of the old ALCO's M420's before BCRail got rid of them. The filming was done on the Squamish Sub from Squamish up to LilloetGo to BCRails website and you can see what the railway has done by checking through their film liason link

RE: Train Movie

John
You'd probably have to find out the exact year that the film was done and then look through back issues of Trains for that year or the year before.
Now don't hold me to this exactly because I was around 12 or 13 at the time it aired on ABC and I think I caught it once more about 15 20 years ago but I want to say they were both GP series locos maybe 35's or 40's the main loco throughout the film was pretty much standard DRG&W livery with Rio Grande on the side painted out(IIRC),the "hero" loco was painted silver overall with an big red elongated diamond(think Reading herald) on the long hood and may have had a smaller diamond on the nose.BTW a correction I forgot that the Mystery Movie was NBC and I can't remember what ABC called their series of made for TV movies that Runaway kicked off.
And for those who may have been interested in the trivia question in my previous post, the movie that ABC showed the following week was the pilot film of The Six Million Dollar Man starring of course Lee Majors(hey I hinted it was a "Major" star)Gary S

There was a theater movie named "Runaway Train" released in 1985 starring Jon Voight. This movie took place in Alaska and the train did not have an engineer. How it got stopped I have no idea because I don't remember seeing it. I got the info from a book of movie titles and ratings.Ken B.Also you can go here for info on the TV movie you were talking about.http://us.imdb.com/Title?0070615

Runaway Train was pretty good in my opinion i saw it in the theater. It does take place in alaska, It's about 2 convicts who escape from a maximum security prison in alaska and head for a railroad yard and get on board a gp7 or a gp9 i can't remember which and hide there, and fall asleep. An engineer climbs about the lead engine which is another gp unit and gets underway before they leave the yard however the engineer has a heart attack and stumbles out the doosr of the locomotive and pulls the emergency brake, but he set the locomotive at full throttle so by then it's too late the brake shoes heat up and then fall off and the rest of the movie is about figuring out how to stop the runaway locomotives anyway it stars Jon Voight, Rebecca De'mornay and another famous actor which i can not remeber the name of at the moment. Which brings to mind a question. What constitues a train? is it just a single locomotive or a multi unit lash up or a locomotive with cars...etc? Beacuse if you don't consider a multi uit lash up a train should the movie been called runaway locomotives or something like that?

That train movie was titled 'Runaway' and was made in 1973, starring Ben Johnson. The engine was Rio Grand GP-40 #3081. I have a slide photo from my personal collection, taken By Al Chione, dated 5/15/73 in front of the Rio Grande Burnham Shops in Denver.

That image was 1973?, almost looks like it fortells the future w/ the SP / DRGW merger w/ a proto. speed lettering job. -- sorry just the first thought that poped into my head when I saw it....

there was one on a tv show that was something like that except for it delt with a steam train and a runaway caboose. I think it was either an episode of "Highway to Heaven" or " Little House on the Prairie" It was one of those shows with Michael landon in it and that other fella with the moustache and beard. @ kids get on the caboose and mess around with the hand brake and so they go for a ride downhill and a steam passenger train is coming up the hill and the steam train has to stop and back up and try to match the speed of the caboose and try to couple with it to slow it down and save the kids along with preventing a crash with the passenger train has anyone seen this?

That was Little House,IIRC the president of the railroad was onboard the train and when papa Engles apologizes to him he says to forget about no harm was done and kids that age tend to mess with things they're not supposed to.
BTW IIRC I think that RR was supposed to be the C&NWGary S
