NYCTA progress - R17 first run

Some screen-shots to show where the R17 is.I've come to the traction forum because this seems to be a better fit than anywhere else!Previous progress reports are at http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/144.html and http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/91.html if your interested where I've got to with the route.Anyway here's some shots of the R17, sitting alongside my R1Screenshot taken on Monday and previously posted!

Theres some texture work and still a representation of the underframe plus the lights, horn and aerial to add to both fronts, plus numbers, etc, etc.I've decided to produce a whole series of these IRT sized R-cars.I may release them as a complete package and not wait for the route to be completed, if people want them.Theres still about a months work to do to get to a position where I'll be able to release them though!Paul

Paul:
You've done a beautiful job on these IND and IRT subway cars. From this basic car, skins can be made for all the other models with this basic shape. I remember riding on all of these cars at one time or another. During all the years that I went to college and to work, it was always on cars such as these that I rode so they mean a lot to me in terms of nostalgia and memories. I thank you for making them and look forward to adding them to my MSTS collection. I know there will be a lot of others who share my enthusiasm. All the best.

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! One miniscule problem though. Aren't the marker lights supposed to be on the car (check the last screenshot)? Otherwise its looking really good! Remember, if you make the R21, that one set was used on an automated Shuttle train (Times Square-Grand Central). It was destroyed in a fire at Grand Central. The R21 and R22 cars are still used in MOW service.

I intend to release as a package the following cars:-

If theres any valid liveries missing from the above list then if you can give me a link or post a photo of the missing livery, then I'll include it in the list.From the above list there should be quite a rainbow of colours that could be linked together. Obviously most of this is just reskinning, but I'll also change the front doors etc as necessary. I'm also thinking of issueing three different versions of each car, one with opening doors (P Key) & interior view in back cab, one with interior view in car body & fixed doors, and one with opening doors and no interior view. This should mean that it'll be possible to control the interior view by selecting the right coach. There'll be two versions of any twin set to make sure the bogies turn the correct way on curves!As to the lights, they will be corrected on the issued cars, as I used the R1's eng file to position it to take the screenshots.Paul

One thing, Paul: I think it would be better if the wheels had a silvery touch rather than paint white, as they do make these cars look a little unrealistic.

You raise an interesting point. Although we both know the wheels are silver, it's amazing how little of this actually stands out in photos etc. It's actually hard to tell that the wheels are indeed made of steel from most angles, therefore I've darkened the wheels, got rid of the white trims as well. Although there are some angles where the wheels would be noticable as silver, I think it's more photogenic if they're left dark.Anyway here's some new screenshots showing progress.

Lights added and put on front of train.
Horn added.I'm not sure what to do with the top "route" lights, should I illuminate them, if so what should they be - I'm thinking that I don't want the cars to be too route specific, so should I include lines in the eng file and let the user choose? - Give me some suggestions.Next things are to add simple controls to the cab, add single car underframe details, add number boards, and make the eng file more realistic to the actual cars fittings.Paul

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now just replace the circle front window with a square, paint the car bright red with black from just under the destination sign up, paint the roof silver, change that 7 to a , change the windows on the side to these put the new MTA logo on it, and you have the last redbirds in operation.

I have some cars that resemble the Red Birds if anyone is interested.Interiors and Cab views are great. A long string of these looks super as the picture shows.Engineer 1008
Still working on TYPE 7 Boston.

Fantastic Paul!
Those are really coming along nicely. The car in the photo, of course, is the Flushing Line's own R-36 model, single ended and coupled semi-permanently together back to back with a drawbar (not a coupler) between the two AA units. The windows were of a European style which seems more common on later stainless steel units as well. Apart from the windows, it was similar to the R-29's which were common to the West Side Manhattan #1 line. The R-36's have also been used on the #1 line at times in the past, still wearing NY World's Fair paint. Your undercarriages and couplers are looking good so far.

Actually, the car in the photo is an R33 double ended unit. The MTA runs that set of R33WF on occasional fan-trips like the one shown above two years ago, and like the one that is December 8 of this year. The R36WF still runs regular service on the 7-line, along with R62As.

Thanks for the info Interborough.
For those who are not familiar with the Flushing line operation, this might be a good time to explain that a typical Flushing line train consisted of 11 cars. Since the R-36's were "married" pairs (as they were referred to),there were 10 in each train. To make up the 11th car, each train had an R-33 car on one end which looked almost exactly like the R-36's except that unlike the R-36's the R-33's had operating cabs on both ends with headlights, rollsigns, etc. There were also R-33's in the R-29 (appearance) version also although the Flushing line was the only NYCTA line that regularly ran 11 car trains. Railroad buffs love these detailed differences in what to anyone else would appear to be the same thing.
