RE: First test run on NYCTA!

Yes it's an R1!I've got plans to do the Astoria and Flushing lines. The screenshots are from the first part of the Flushing line and are actually the R1 in what will be Times Square Station! I know it doesn't belong there, but my R12's are only a set of plans at the moment.I've got an idea for a method of tackling underground tracks that means you can add whatever track sections you like and then put the tunnels around them, the only thing is it means making the track sections! See my post on underground railways in the route design forum.I'm using information from the NYCSubway.org web site, as theres a small body of water between me and NY, called the Atlantic!I'm using the cut and cover method of excavation, which explains why most of the route appears to be in open air at the moment!I'll post at approx monthly intervals, to keep people updated.I plan three versions of each car in each colour that I issue, basically one with no interior view, one with the interior view in the coach, and one with the interior view in the rear cab. This should make it simpler if you need to reverse at some point, as I always prefer to look out of a cab, and the cab and interior views are the only ones you can use in tunnels!I've just about been able to get tracks laid at queensboro plaza with the outbound over the inbound, but it's taken alot of earth moving.Theres a multitude of structures to make, so I'll repost when I have something else.Paul

I think you should compare the styles of third rail of the MTA.
Top: LIRR
Middle: Metro North Hudson Line
Bottom: NYCTA Division-A Flushing Line 7
The third rail shoes of Metro North and NYCTA run under the third rail while LIRR's run over it.

Wrong.MNRR is the only one of the NYC Area railroads that use over-the-shoe 3rd rail--LIRR AND NYCT (subway) use under-the-shoe rails. The wood (only in some places nowadays on the subway) and metal that you see in those pictures are to keep the actual contact surfaces protected from snow accumulation. MNRR went with the over-the-shoe rails because of the same reason (accumulation would not actually be ON the contact surface, but on the brownish plastic covering.)Stuart D. Guberman

RE: First test run on NYCTA!

Correction:As a rider of the NYCTA subways and especially the #7 Flushing line for 25 years, I can assure all that the third rail shoes of these trains (as does the LIRR, I believe) run on top of the third rail which is covered by a wood and more recently metal plank or strip for protection to track workers. The new York City suburban lines such as the Metro North routes use an underrunning shoe for the third rail with a different appearance from the subway version.

RE: First test run on NYCTA!

I've got half the answer! The third rail on the IRT is 4'7" from the track centreline! (Found it in a drawing on http://www.nycsubway.org )So allowing for a nominal 4'8.5" that makes it 2'3" from running edge, 2' from outside edge in round figures. As for height, I've not been able to locate an exact height for any of the three systems, but LUL, and Railtrack here in England use a height of 3" above running rail for the positive (outside) rail and a height of 1.5 inches for the negative (centre) rail when it's a 4 rail area. The positive rail is also only 16" centre from the running edge in England.I hope this helps.Paul

Looks great! I can't wait. I used to ride an R-9 to school in the 70's on the CC line between Bedford Park Blvd and 161st Yankee Stadium. The CC line ran local during the morning rush hour while the D line ran express in the morning with more modern equipment. The CC was one of the last lines to run them. The R-1 to R-9 series of cars looked very similar. They were replaced on that line in the early 80's I believe with the R-10 and eventually with more up to date equipment. They had very distinctive traction motors. You could barely hear yourself talk when ring in them. Great job!!

Paul,
The first sneak peek of your run looks fantastic. I'm so glad someone is working on a New York City subway route! Keep up the great work! Looking forward to seeing the route when it's complete.

RE: First test run on NYCTA!

Paul:
Wonderful shots! Godspeed with your route. There have always been subway buffs who love the New York City Transit subway system. Count me in as I have been fascinated with them also since first riding aboard them as a child. I rode to school on them and to work for all of my adult life and found life aboard the trains to be a joy (for the most part). I'll be looking forward to your making of this route available for those of us who have been hoping that someone with your talents would go ahead with a project such as this. In a way, it's a tough assignment because of the vast complexity of an underground transit system such as New York City's. Many NYC expatriates will love to see this route as well.

Fantastic! I wish I had the time and talent to accomplish half of what you showed us. Could you imagine the A/I trafic problems for this route or any metro route?
