Heres some more pictures of the NYCTA work in progress.First sections of covered way built, currently only 400m, but now I've figured out how to get them straight and level!Internal view almost completed. Problem with material properties, see http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/5135.htmlOtherwise enjoy the views.A route based on the NYCTA Flushing and Astoria Lines, with no set date for release. To include subway trains, signalling etc. (Will be Freeware)!Probably too many views, but needed to prove I'd cracked the views in both day & Night with the Snow as well.NYCTA progress – image 2

Great job!
Are you also making IRT equiptment to go with the 7-train as well as the R1-9 to go with the N/R-train? Remember the LIRR at Woodside and Hunters Point, New Haven/Amtrak at Astoria, and Pennsy's Sunnyside Yards just outside of Queensboro Plaza.

RE: NYCTA progress

I plan to include the R12 for the No 7 line, but I've located a book with some plans of earlier Interborough rolling stock!I think the R12 will be built, but I'm very tempted to do some steinways! Then I can have them in original Green, common dirty Black, Maroon, with yellow trim? and of course MoW Yellow!Choices, choices, choices. But first things first, to complete the structures for the cut and cover sections.Paul

RE: NYCTA progress

Those tunnel shots are really looking authentic. With the right skins to provide more detail, one could almost imagine entering the picture.
Love the R1 cars. R-12 cars would be nice but doing the simpler round roof cars would allow skinners to create everything from the R-15's up to the R-33's and R-36's that rolled on the Flushing line up until a few months ago. The West side line's R-29's also rolled on the Flushing route during subway car reconstruction. As for the Lo-V's, I'd love to have MSTS models of them as well. I rode on those daily to school in Manhattan and later on Lo-V Museum trains during lunch hours with my boss, (a "Manhattan" and subway train buff). The younger guys don't remember anything but the stainless steel equipment, but for me and for those who've been around the block a few times, the old olive green and red trains can't be beat. We'll be keeping tabs on your wonderful talent, and thanks!

RE: NYCTA progress

The problem I've got with the subway skins is that I don't have a clear idea what colour the beams should be. I've looked at the WTC pictures, but they all seem too bright, unless there is a large "clean Tunnels" campaign. If you can point me to any pictures then I'll know what to update the skins to.Paul

RE: NYCTA progress

In the past and up until the Sixties the beams were painted a Kelly green on the bottom and 3/4 of the way up. Then white up to the ceiling which was usually white also. There was usually a stark contrast between the brightly painted beams within the station confines and the beams at the end of the stations going deep inside the tunnels which could be said to be a grimy greyish brownish color similar to the color of installed rail. The tunnel (side) walls were cast concrete, with ribs every 3 or 4 ft. or so that arched at the top.
Lights along the tunnel walls were incandescent with a blue bulb perhaps every 1/4 mile or so which added to the visual interest. More recently the beams could be painted any color and not always a pleasing one. I guess they used whatever was on sale. Orange, Tan, red and blue have been common. My personal preference goes to the older color scheme of Kelly green and white which seems to have been the original colors of the subway when it was constructed.

RE: NYCTA progress

They still do. I was on the 7-train last week, and of the 4 trains I saw, 3 were redbirds. The R62s are coming onto the line slowly, as they are bumped from the 6-train by the new R142s. The redbirds on the 2,4,5, and 6 trains are gone. They were replaced by R142s and R142As. The 1/9, S, and 3 trains still use R62As. The R62As on the 6 have found their way onto the 7. The R62s are still running on the 4 train alongside R142As.

RE: NYCTA progress

Nice to know they're (the "Redbirds") still running. But I guess it won't be for much longer. All the more reason why a talented 3D modeler is wanted desperately to create a basic R-29 shape for us to reskin into the various other versions of this basic car that dominated the New York City subway scene since the early Sixties. The R-29 models are easily recognized by their 2 sets of 3 aluminum framed windows along the side which dropped down from the top. Of course one of the windows sported destination signage.

RE: NYCTA progress

Those are all retired. The only ones left are the R33 and R36 World's Fair cars. These have the larger windows along the side.
R33WF on the Culver Line:
NYCTA progress – image 19
R36WF on the Flushing Line:
NYCTA progress – image 20
What they originally looked like:
R33WF:
NYCTA progress – image 21
R36WF:
NYCTA progress – image 22
A quick fact from www.nycsubway.org:
Why do the car lights blink on the World's Fair/Flushing Line cars but not the others? The original carbody lighting design called for the lights to be run directly off the 600V supply (with a polarity reverser relay when flourescents came along). A relay called the ELR (Emergency Lighting Relay) was also across the line. When the 600V failed (car crosses a contact rail gap), the relay goes off and the normally-closed contacts of the relay apply 37V battery voltage to a set of emergency, or "battery" lights. On the IRT redbirds, these are incandescent bulbs located along the center of the car. There are some inside the long flourescent glass fixture, and there is one each in the center of each axiflow fan. The only cars left in passenger service that still function this way are the World's Fair, aka Flushing, aka Corona R33/R36 fleet. When the R26/28/29 fleet was overhauled by MK, the battery lights were removed from the center of the fans and PA speakers replaced them. On these cars, a solid-state converter replaces the older motor-generator set for converting 600V to battery voltage, and the same converter unit also contains a solid state lighting inverter to take the battery voltage, chop it to AC, and step it up to drive the flourescent bulbs. When 600 goes off on these cars, the lights stay on fully for up to about 30 seconds. In prolonged power-out, the inverter gradually shuts down banks of lights until only two lights are on in the entire car. The Flushing cars were rebuilt in 1985 by Coney Island, before the more thorough car overhaul program was devised. They left a lot of "old technology" behind, including the Motor-Generator and the classic SMEE pneumatic units. That's why those are the only cars that still go "puff" when the doors close, and why the lights still blink out across third rail gaps.

RE: NYCTA progress

O.K. I capitulate!!I'd only begun the bogies, so I've decided to switch to the R17!This should enable all the double ended IRT R stock (R17, R21, R22, & R33WF.I'll also include a single ended version so that it can be re-skinned as the R26, R28, R29, R33(non WF), R36, & R36WF cars. On second thoughts, It'd better be a pair of cars so the bogies go the right way! (Damn MSTS)!NYCTA progress – image 24
Screen-shot shows the start of construction.Incidentally, I'm trying to find some rolling stock in England with similar sounds, to update the sound system to! LUL 1967 stock is currently looking as the front runner!Paul
