Hood Doors, Revisited again – image 1

Well after getting unhappy with my old methods, I started looking on others peoples Units, And formulating other methods, here's my results:
The First Example we see on the left is making the door seems flush with the hood, As it appears on EMD units, The Middle We see the doors appear to be above the hood, I find this is useful for when a texture is to low res and makes the flush method look too big, i.e. 1px looks like 3px in the sim, And finally on the right, This is the old method I was using.

RE: Hood Doors, Revisited again

Nice.So the thing you didn't like about your old method is the wider chamferred edges around the doors? Because other than that, 1 and 3 look identical.Just curious...Also curious about your shadows. I like the raised effect, but do you modify your shadow contrast to suit the livery you're working on?I would expect a darker livery to pretty well negate your shadows effectiveness. Do you lighten them any to get better contrast on darker paint?-Jeff

yep it's the wideness that bothers me, on 3 to get the total effect, it require a total of 3 pixels, now put that on a unit like Justin Cornell's GP40 model, which has a relatively small spot mapped for the hood, it looks more like 6px in the sim, and it's much to my disliking, The Opposite can be said About Alabama Railfans's u23B however, nice huge 1024 textures make method 1 and 3 look great, If more models were mapped that way.. But ah well, So I'm going to work more on this today and make a compromise between 1 and 2, and see what happens, I am satisfied with the hinges though, and the handles are fine.. As I always say, One's self is One's biggest critic, If i would just stay happy with one thing, i'd be set (but then i'd never improve! )

Hey shawn, maybe we should collaborate on a tutorial(s) sometime about doing hood detail (your input) and weathering (my input) to have downloadable at the TKW site?Longhairedwizard

Hey Shawn, sorry to dig up an old post man, but I have used your method on the hood doors. Here are some shots. I think it is an excellent method for repainting. What do you think??I purposly left of the "Southern Pacific" on the hood so the hood doors can be seen easier.>Mike Forster<

Nice!
Very Nice! Some people may argue that doors are flush and don't stick out, But I figure, If it looks good, Who cares?

Icy,
The hood doors are NOT flush. The door's protrude out the thickness of the steel. Here's one of my NY&A MP's from the Sim and a photo of the real NY&A MP....look at the red arrows. KRO52
