Thanks to John Peterson for his model of the GE U23b.Anyone thinking about starting skinning should try one of Johns models.
The body parts are all identified and on one tga. map.It makes repainting a lot easier. Nice work John.

Was there such an animal- a Penn Central u23b? I can find no
picture of one. One site listed them numbered 2700-76.Other sites
list those numbers as u28b's. So that brings the next question.
Other than 500 more hp ,any major body changes? From the photos of
the u28's they look much the same ...... (a rivet counter screams
in the dark)!
Here's a couple of pictures of the scratching so far. The grey
and pc locos are basically the same.

No it's not Shane. This one has a good chance of taking a last ride to the electronic scrapyard. I've messed up some parts and will start again , this one was kind of an experiment.
Here is the second picture again . When I edited it the first time
I must have deleted it. A pc u23? – image 5

RE: a pc u23?

I agree - VERY nice work indeed, and also I totally agree about the ease of repainting John's locos. It does make them a pleasure to repaint, and they are great models as well.Cheers

I hope you stick with the heavy weathering. It looks very good.

RE: a pc u23?

I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but PC inherited quite a few U32B's from the New Haven. They were filthy with em.

RE: a pc u23?

Well, thank you all for your kind replies. Perhaps I
might be able to help some of you with your repaints.
Basically its making two skins, one is the weathered skin done
in shades of grey, and the second is your bright shiny just out of the paint shop skin.
Here's a couple of pictures to explain. This is by far the most important skin as you can use it over
and over again. You can use it for different roads and different
numbers of the same road. So make a good job of it and take your time.

The second skin is the new, out of the paint shop skin.
I don't have a pic of that one but you can imagine combining
the generic or weathered skin with the new skin to end up with
something like the pic above. In your paint program you just cut and paste the new skin on top of the weathered skin and either adjust the opacity or bring out
the eraser or a combo of both.
BE SURE TO KEEP A CLEAN COPY OF THE WEATHERED SKIN. You can use it again.

Hope this helps.
Still wondering about the pc u23b's.

RE: a pc u23?

This probably is a dumb question to ask but im new to repainting locomotives. When i paint the side of the klw gp38 replacement #2099 do I paint over the lines that indicate the enginer doors? Ive been trying to repaint this, but i can get the eng file to work right yet, but anyways do i paint over the lines or not? Any help would suerly be appreciated. A pc u23? – image 16

RE: a pc u23?

The answer is probably yes and no and sometimes.
Don't know which paint program you are using but look for an option
called "opacity" . If you experiment you'll find you can paint
areas and still see the lines of the engine doors.

RE: a pc u23?

I'm not familiar with those paint programs but they all
probably have some way of adjusting the "opacity".
Opacity comes from the word opaque and it is the opposite
of transparency. When something is transparent you can see through it
when something is opaque you can't see through it. In your paint program have a look for a slider where you can adjust the opacity.
When the opacity is low , you will be able to paint over your
engine doors and still see them afterwards. transparent as mud I bet. Well after looking for some time, today I've found a picture of

RE: a pc u23?

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/if you look in the Penn Central and Conrail sections you'll find pictures of PC U23Bs. They are mislabled as U28Bs in the PC section, numbers 2730, 2749, 2756, and 2773 are U23Bs instead of U28Bs. you also may want to use a shape file without the nose haedlight as all of PC's U23Bs did not have this feature. The PC U23Bs were the last new engines PC bought in the early 70s.joeA pc u23? – image 19
