Sep-03-01, 02:17 PM (EST) "Old Activities keep popping up" When deleting old activities I go to the route folder in MSTS and delete the paths and activities at the same time. When I reopen the activity editor I get error messages related to paths and activities I have already deleted. Is there an area on the hard drive where these activites are still resident? Must I also delete them? Seems to me I remember reading about this 3 months ago!
Help!

"RE: Old Activities keep popping up" hi joe, you probably have parts of activities hanging around in the activities folders of ur routes folders. path files, consist files, traffic files and service files. they look for associated files whenever you go in to the editor. try going to your file manager and looking thru the path, consist, service and traffic folders by date. you can get rid of the fles that way. oh, before that, when you go in to activity editor, jot down the files that are being prompted. that may be a clue to what their associated with.

I guess this means "Delete" doesn't mean "Delete" or to use an old saying; Gone but NEVER forgotten! This seems like a lot of work. I did note that the error messages relate to Station Platforms and Sidings which I may have subsequently altered or moved. So, I should go to the paths folder and look for old corrupted paths??? Sep-09-01, 10:09 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Old Activities keep popping up" You'll also get that if you have two versions of the same route
in the routes directory. The activity editor and the game don't pay any attention to what the directory is called, and since it references a bunch of different files in the route structures it gets mixed up between the two. Some guy wrote a step by step on exactly what you got to hack to change all the references, but until I get time to find it and study it I just move all but one copy of the route to a backup folder. Odd thing is, the geo extractor don't pay any attention to the directory name when you load the quad tree and add or delete tiles, but you have to rename the directory to the same name you had when the route was originally extracted if you want to change the start tile. You can change it back again after the start tile update, cuz the route editor don't pay any attention to the directory name either. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

(the second post I believe) It's called the "The Idiot's Guide"
toward the bottom of the "guide" it sort of tells you about "broken paths" and how to get rid of them. I had the some problem you are having until I found this guide. Hope this helps. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

"RE: Old Activities keep popping up" LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-01 AT 11:32 AM (EST)Only problem is that at the time I wrote that I was unaware of the "logic" if you want to call it that, that the editor uses to save and load the files. To see a wierd example of this, copy the settle and carlisle to a backup folder, rename the directory to "screwy" or something. Open it in the route editor (there will be two listings for settle & carlisle cuz the route editor ignores the directory name too, so pick the second one) and rename the route to "goofy". Copy and paste (or just move) it back into the \routes directory. You'll see \europe1 and \screwy, and YOU aren't going to get them confused because the directory names are so different. Create an activity, go drive it, then try to get back in and edit it. After that, look at the directories to see where the various files went. FUN! Anyway, until I get a chance to figure out how to hack all the references, I just make sure that I only have one copy of each route in the \routes directory, and stow all the clones someplace else. I also saw this when I was screwing around making that auto install for version 3.1, my first attempt unzipped all the files into the root of the \routes directory, and I didn't go back and delete all of them. So when I finally got the auto install working right, I changed some activities to play with the new logging loco and dockside switcher, and the activity editor went ballistic with the complete and incomplete versions of the route it found. I know a lot of this sounds confusing, but what I do is rename directory, portogdenv4g to portogdenv4h, for example, copy and paste into \microsoft games\backup, then I go in to the new backup I just pasted and delete the \envfiles \shapes \sounds \textures \terrtex, altho I don't bother trying to get it as small as possible like I'm prepping for upload, cuz it's just a backup. That way the editors can find only one copy of the route to destroy. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-10-01, 03:50 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Old Activities keep popping up" LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-01 AT 03:52 PM (EST)OOPs. I meant first. In fact, I said first, you just weren't paying attention. No, don't look up there, howdja expect me to lie to you if you don't take my word for it? Anyway, after scewing around with the above, and goofing it up the first try ("screwy" comes after "europe1" in the directory structure, which unless I'm rusty on my ABCs would be correct, but for some reason ended up being above the route it was cloned from in the double listing in the editor.), I finally got the clone of settle and carlisle renamed to "goofy". Then I created one activity for it, tried to run it in the sim, got the send/don't send and one of those severe lockups that screws up the CMOS and forces you to load the BIOS setup and restore all the settings. I haven't seen that one with the activity editor before, I usually get it with the route editor, and I've taken to watching the boot screen to make sure it says PC133 instead of PC100 after a crash, cuz this ASUS board loads the factory defaults when something messes with it like that. Grouchy. Anyway, doing a search, find, files named "strange", turned up this:
Note that the .act file (which is the main activity) is in the right place, but the service went to the wrong route, and the path got saved to both. I never got the same results twice the few times I tried this before, but of course the simple solutions are always best; only one copy or version of a route in the \routes folder at a time.
