RE: Suggestions on how to make Player Train take the ho

Not being the other guys, I do it wierd.http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=11521&forum=DCForumID3With that signal setup the AI train always has priority unless the player can get to the junction before the switch is set for the AI train. On routes with conventional signals, here's what some guys have said works;http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/AI_otake.html

It looks not so unnaturally becouse there is a steep incline near tunnel entrance and once you stop you slowly rolling back to the second reverse point. Then you just stop at the siding and wait for clearance.

Yeah, you look at the tutorial tho, it says to place the reverse points close together and then you don't need to reverse, since tripping the first one while your train is on top of the second one triggers the second one too. Trick here is to stop short of both reverse points so your path stops extending, then after the AI train passes thru you pull forward over both reverse points, which starts your path moving forward again. Putting both close together just short of the signal makes it so there's no unrealistic looking funky stuff. That's because the AI train is waiting for you to run your path first, and if your path stops short of the double reverse point the AI doesn't see a conflicting player path it has to yield to. Anybody know of a default activity that actually has player interaction with the AI trains? All the ones I've tried had the AI train running on a parallel track with no real need for signals since the paths never intersect.
I have experimented with double reverse points for AI trains to stop their paths from extending momentarily (since my route is set up for the AI to have priority by default), but that sometimes makes the path stop advancing altogether and the AI train just sits there permanantly.

RE: Suggestions on how to make Player Train take the ho

Hi SniperThe key to DRPs seems to be that as long as the train is over both RPs at the same time you won't need to reverse. Now of course, this is too easy, this is MSTS after all If the train is long enough that a node is between the loco and the rear of the train, the DRPs only seem to work as expected if there are no nodes between the first (farthest in the direction of travel) and the front of the train and the second and the rear of the train. All the intermediate nodes must be between the two RPs.At one time I had a diagram somewhere in Train-Sim, don't know if it's still findable. Found the thread, it's
"http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID7/1534.html"; - hope this helps.GaryG

LAST EDITED ON Jul-22-03 AT 11:22 PM (EDT)

If your refering to the player train taking the hole to be passed from BEHIND by an AI train, then Long before the Double reversing point trick, I discovered a couple ways....First, I was able to get an AI to pass the player but only if the AI was longer than the siding the player is stopped at...player would have get a red signal and AI behind player would pass about 10-12 minutes later and signal would clear another ten minutes later. (I've successfully done this in a couple locations on the East metro route with its relatively short sidings....tried it on a different route with no success so this may or may not work on routes other than east metro). <see my east metro hotmetal train activity if you wish to see how its set up>secondly, if the player train takes a siding by passing it and backing in (for whatever reason..I can think of several such as rolling stock is block one end of siding), the reverse motion will cue the following AI to take priority...(I did this on my FBL route activity pack)Third, if the siding taken by the player has some industrial leads in it that you must switch...the reveresing moves will cue any following ai trains. The 2nd and 3rd techniques are similar to the double reversing points trick as your redirecting the player path backwards to trick the following AI into taking priority over the player. If your just trying to get the player train to wait in a siding for an AI train to pass from the front (most commmon) then its mostly all about timing and hoping the route your using has decent signals on it.timing is most important here......just use the vcr playback and adjust AI service times to get the effect you want..that how I generally do it.As far as the double reversing points thing...havent yet needed it yet!!!
