Hey guys & gals,
Just spent several hours doing a activity to A: prove the light bug will or will not cause trouble, and B: just to have a activity I created. However, I find the editor to be a buggy POS. I cannot get more than 3 consists placed before a crash. Also: I think not only is there a light limit, but a model limit too. Too many models, .s files won't load..or the activity crashes before starting.I am doing a coal train on the IC route from CLinton to Matoon. I have almost 250 cars in Clinton yard. The next step was to get to Decatur and give the industries some carloadings. (ANYTHING but default...only so much BNSF you can have in 1981!!! )I re-used some consists, and made a few more new ones....result: CRASH.....remove some, load...crash. Hmmmmmmm....cut back to Decatur...load...got to the cab of the loco...crash.LUCKILY I saved my work at CLinton and packaged it so I could start over. and over. AND OVER. OK, my question the the activity gurus...has anyone else had this trouble, or ALL of you?? Any way to over-ride the trouble?I can understand and respect the guys who have given us great activities. This is driving me nuts!! For reference : Athlon 2600 2.083 gig processor, 500MB ddr3200 ram, 256 ddr 2600 ram. Asus A7v8x motherboard. this also reinforces my thought that MSTS framerates is based on RAM. Anyone care to post a thought on this subject? Someday I might even be able to get trains to meet me at sidings and dissapear. WOuld this help? Later! Gonna relax now....and re-plant my hair. Kelley D. Ellison

RE: How does ANYONE ever do activities???????

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess too many cars. I've never seen an activity with anywhere near that many cars. Remember, the game has to load all that stuff when the activity starts, and I'm sure you can overtax the whole shebang. I've noticed a distinctive hesitation when a particularly long train (50 cars, or so) comes into view - the game must load all those shapes, so I'd bet trying to load hundreds of shapes all at once is just too much. But then, I've only done a few activities, and rather modest ones at that. Maybe some of the true activity guys can shed more light on this.MC

No, I have had things with that many cars along the tracks in Cajon without crash city. It might be the placement of the consists that is causing the problems. Though I find that 90% of the crashes in the AE are due to paths. Are you getting any error messages?Kevin Arceneaux

RE: How does ANYONE ever do activities???????

Hi Kev, Kinda hoped ya would answer. I know you have had at least that many in activities you did. I only have one path, as I don't know how to make other trains go yet. Do you have to put something on the ends of a consist to act as a block or just place them?I have however, had path conflicts where I put too long of a train on a interlocking, or too close as well. That was in the first "draft" LOL Do you have the IC route? My thought was to start out at the depot in Clinton proper, instead of out at the yard. When out there, the town loads after you start, and that is when I get the main crash. City buildings .s file after .s file won't load. You can even hear the comp. working hard. In the first draft, cars and consists that normally had NO trouble would not load. In fact, (and I know this is a AE issue, NOT yours) the MILW yellow set would not load .s'es...but would load in explore. In reality, Clinton would not have had much through traffic in 1981. I would imagine most of what was in the yard was heavy bad-order cars. I did try to duplicate that to a point.....but in reality, I was trying to use "modelers license" and imagine that the Staggers act made the route more valueable.I spent at least 24 hours on it so far. (not all at once) I keep trying to get the proper balance. I would like to get the opposing traffic to run too, but right now, I would just be happy to get all my trains on the route!! I must say, I have alot of pride in getting the first build to load and see trains I built and placed sitting there. But it is sure a depressing thing to have AE crash every three consists. Well, enough fun on this for a bit. Gotta head into the lighting shop for a while and get some work done so I have WABASH stuff to put in Decatur...LOL (Lets see if Paul F. bites on this bait...LOL Thanks much!!Kelley D. Ellison

RE: How does ANYONE ever do activities???????

Sounds like two issues here.
1. When you play the activity, it crashes because of missing route s and sd files. You'll need to fix this, has it worked before?
2. Crashes in the AE. Now the AE may be related to a registry issue or a path issue. Ususally if it an ace, s, and sd file issue, you get and error message before the crash. I have not seen a crash due to too many cars showing. I know in one of my act for Cajon, I have 6 trains in the yard and it didn't crash. Most of those trains averaged 90 cars. so that is over 500 cars present. Have you run CB on the cars to see if there is a problem with them? And if you did and corrected thsose problems, have you run it again? I found at times you need to do two passes to get all the kinks out. Other than redoing the path completely I really don't know what to tell you to fix it. Though it really sounds like a path problem. Try it by cloning the activity and redoing the path in each clone from a different point and see if you get the crash.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: How does ANYONE ever do activities???????

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-03 AT 07:46 AM (EDT)

Hi Kelley, there is a post at http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID7/1711.html that I think is related, although it deals with AI trains. I've answered in detail there at http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID7/1711.html#5In a nutshell: If I run MSTS on a 256MB laptop, I have observed the same as soon as I have more than 120 or so pieces of rolling stock in one activity (including the player train!). On the desktop with 1MB of RAM, I can run the same activity, but get the same crashes if I really fill those yards & industries along a route to what I assume to be prototypical numbers of cars Assuming that it is a RAM problem, I have reluctantly resigned and try to keep my loose consists and AI train length to levels and numbers the sim can handle... Luckily, I like long runs, so I have plenty of time to insert AI trains over the duration of the activity, trying to place them "strategically" so that they only appear when and where I pass with my train, and cease their electronic existence shortly thereafter. For my own pleasure, I have done a rail fan special activity over MP30 a while ago that included something like 25 AI meets over the 4 1/2 hour run, with no more than 3 or 4 AI trains "existing" at any given moment. It ran without crashes on the 256MB RAM laptop. With some careful timing, I also try to use AI trains to simulate a well filled yard, I've just to make sure that their path crosses mine, and that they only appear after my path / signals are already set, so that the AI's are blocked by my train until I have passed. Of course that works best at the beginning of a run, say on MP31 in Whitefish or Shelby or on Cajon at Barstow or San Bernardino, where my player train is certain to be on time Lukas a.k.a Swissie
