I have been doing small activities on Cajon. It seems that when I include several other consists that will pass my player consist along the route, I get this crash. I have 200+ locos and 700+ of rolling stock. All are clean in Conbuilder. It is usually an engine that the sim says it cannot create from a unit that is approaching the player consist. I have swapped out the troublesome loco twice and each time the replacement loco is not able to be created. I am about to try a third. Thanks
Pete

Activity Crashes-Unable to create UID etc!-HELP – image 1

I'm not 100% certain, but I have a good guess as to what this is because I've been plagued with this error as well. Somehow, some way, I think this is related to a memory leak in some shape or form. You say there are no memory leaks outside of the editors? Leave MSTS running, with your consist stopped, for about 5 hours. Check your FPS right when you start it, and then check it again when you return 5 hours later. I think you'd be suprised. Now, I was getting this same error every time I tried one of my activities I've been making for KHP2. Finally I decided to try and find out what it was that was causing it. I had been saving often, usually after I passed a significant siding or as I approached one. I had also been jumping back and forth through the various views. Front of train, rear of train, railfan cam, passenger cam, just about every view except for the coupler and yard views. So, I jumped in the cab and tried the activity again. I kept my butt planted in the cab and didn't change views at all save the heads-out view. I didn't save the activity either. Doing this, I was able to complete the activity without the errors. Now, I don't think it's strictly related to some sort of memory leak either, now that you mention you have quite the collection of rollingstock. I also have quite a collection; 867 locomotives, 1625 wagons. I just didn't have this problem when I didn't have the numbers I do now. So, maybe the 2 are collaboratively working to give us this error. Like I said, I'm not 100% sure, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's something to do with the above. I'd be interested to see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem so we might get the cause narrowed down. I haven't used Train Store in some time, but if the problem keeps up I'll probably be brushing the dust off to see if that cures it.Regards,

Pete, when is the crash happening? In the AE or the sim? Try a default one and see what happens. I haven't had this happen.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Activity Crashes-Unable to create UID etc!-HELP

Kevin,
Happens in the sim. I have reduced the consists and no matter what, at some point early in the sim a loco or even now a car will not be able to be located. It's frustrating. The defaults run fine. I am going to try one on KHP2 and see what happens. It should be noted that my MSTS had never really ran right. Except for the very first play after a fresh install (of XP) can I properly exit a game. It's a long frustrating story.Pete

Hi Pete,> It seems that when I include several other consists that will pass my player consist along the route, I get this crash. Sounds familiar to me... And there seems to be a post that is very related to your problem, although it deals with AI trains. It'll be interesting if the MSTS pro's find out an explanation to it...Let me ask you (apart from the usual problems of too many consists in the folder that have been asked before etc.) what specification your 'puter has. Because I assume swapping out the engine will not help you, you'll probably have to shorten some AI trains from your activity, or drop some of them entirely. That's what I have observed so far: I occasionally run MSTS from my Laptop with just 256MB of RAM and I get the "UiD error" whenever I have something like over 120 +/- units of rolling stock "active" at the same time, be it just an ultralong player consist, be it a "reasonable" player train plus too many loose consists (parked trains) and/or AI trains (computer driven trains). If it's loose consists, then the activity either crashes with strings of UiD errors before loading completely, or it loads but locks itself up in the first second. If it's too many AI trains, then the sim either crashes when the offending consist comes into being (i.e. when it's shape is loaded) with the send/don't send error, or when the offending consist approaches, with an UiD error as you described. As I can normally run the offending activity on my high end desktop with 1GB of RAM, but as I get similar problems if I fill an entire yard with hundreds of cars there (tried it only once!), I assume the problem is related to available RAM. Sometimes on the low-end laptop, it's also a not-train related shape that triggers the UID error and shuts the sim down, if a route is very dense in scenery items and the player train is also close to the 120 car limit I experienced. For the time being, that means that I am very careful with how many loose consists I place in an activity, and I also try not to have more than 3-4 AI trains running at any given time. Although this means that yards and sidings are un-prototypically empty, and AI paths are just long enough to make sure an AI is there where I am.Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: Activity Crashes-Unable to create UID etc!-HELP

I have run large numbers of loose consists on both 256 and 512M of ram and never had this happen. As far as loose consists - I have been leaving them out due to the frame rate killers that they are. Many of the routes now are so detailed that eyecandy is a killer.Kevin Arceneaux

Guys,
I have about 160 consists. Proud to say all mine, except for the KHP2 stuff.
Here is my system:
P4 2.0 GHz, 512 PC800 RDRAM,64MB GeForce4 MX video card w/ a 80GB HD.

RE: Activity Crashes-Unable to create UID etc!-HELP

Guys,
On the activity in question, I am running a westbound unit (4xSD40'2 w 60 odd hoppers) from Barstow to San Bernardino. I have reduced oncoming trains to 3 and have set out about 7 or 8 loose consists. I have reduced these from the original l6 oncoming trains and 14 or so loose consists. So far so good, no UID errors. I am testing it as we speak and about 1/3 of the way through.Pete

Pete, send it to me and I will look it over. I reloaded a bunch of routes the other day and Cajon was one of them, it is nice having an 80g drive. I found if I move the activites, traffic, and services files out, it does not take any longer to load.Kevin Arceneaux

Kevin,
I think this Train Store 2.0 might be the ticket. I have packed up and stored away unused consists and other items. I have added more consists to the problem activity and so far so good.Pete

I forgot to tell you I couldn't test the activity. Cajon is one of those that does not cooperate with the packager, use Route Riter, it is far superior anyway.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Activity Crashes-Unable to create UID etc!-HELP

Hi Kevin, taking in your experience, I see that it cannot be memory alone - might also be the graphics card, game settings, processor speed or any combination of factors. Still, I cannot go over 120 cars and engines on the laptop. Interestingly it doesn't matter much on which route with me, FPS friendly Full Bucket is about as picky about the number I use as highly scenicised Ohio Rail Build 10. But then, I also do not get proper sounds on the laptop: modulated sounds don't work at all, and other sound entirly freezes up after a certain period of running. Guess I shouldn't use MSTS on that system.Still, nobody seems to be able to go over 800 units of rolling stock in one session (unbeatable limit for longest train posted a few weeks ago, IIRC) - btw what happens if you try? UiD error or something else?Cheers, and thanks for all input - I've been wondering about that issue a while, but thought it was just on my system.Lukas a.k.a Swissie
