May-15-02, 07:00 PM (EDT) 2. "RE: who is doing what?" I am doing the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon/Washington border. Phase 1 starts about 10 miles east of The Dalles and proceeds west to Hood River. Phase 2 will go from Hood River west to Portland/Vancouver. I am doing both the BNSF trackage on the north side of the river and UP on the south side. This is my first route and I am learing very quickly. However, I don't recommend a project of this magnitude for beginners.

May-15-02, 09:39 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: who is doing what?" I am doing the Clinchfield. KP sub is completed, but will be revised with more accurate bridges and tunnel portals before general release, as these are now available. BR sub is about 75% done, with industries etc. being added. Check for threads containing landnrailroader and you can see the progress. This is part of the Catawba River Bridge near Marion, NC.
When it is done, there will be water, water, everywhere water at this point, (It's a man-made lake) but water is one of the last steps.J. H. Sullivan, P.E. (retired from CSX and proud of it) Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-15-02, 10:27 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: who is doing what?" Lake State, formally the Detroit & Mackinaw, From Bay City, Michigan to Roger City, currently, track laid as far as Alabaster. (If I ever stop making bridges, I'll continue on this route.) There is a ton of landscaping to do even though most of the route is quite flat. The northern 2/3rds is all forested. This is the Monitor Sugar spur in Bay City using Alan's paper mill as a temporary industry.
The silver texture viaduct towers in J. H. Sullivan's route will soon be available for download.SRV Ron Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-15-02, 10:41 PM (EDT) 6. "RE: who is doing what?" I am creating a fictional route, with the flavor of the Chicago suburbs. Believe it or not, track is about 80% done, and signals are next. All the yards are done, now all I have to do, is finish linking them all. The route goes something like this.. There is a major yard at the start of the route, you travel west to the other yard (which I finished today) at one point, there is a "Y" interchange to a single track main that goes south to a small yard, and then the tracks continue east, and then northeast, connecting at the east end of the "start" yard. There is also a 2 track main from the east end of the same yard that goes north to another yard, and those tracks continue south-southwest to connect with the large yard at the west end of the route. The basic idea is, that you can take a train, and if you switch right, you can explore the whole route, through each of the four yards. When looking at a map of the Chicago area, the railroads all interchange, i.e. you can start in Barr Yard on the South Side, and travel north to UP's Proviso Yard, or, interchange to the BNSF and travel to the Eola (is that right?) yard in Aurora. Right now, I am also working on some model buildings (houses and 3 flats) But, texture photos need to be done. But, anyway, that's my progress report. I am thinking of calling it the "Suburban Route" Anyway, that's the status. Track is 80% done. This is going much better than the major project I had originally embarked on, and became too much to handle. (No screenshots yet, because I don't know how to upload them) Tim. Man, I would kill for that Clinchfield route....Since we can't pay for it with the default stuff in it, wonder if its legal for me to donate some money to your favorite charity in exchange for it? My intention is to build the L&N Cumberland Valley division. Or at least part of it, from Loyall through Harlan to the Hagans switchback. All thats done so far is the mountains... no track laid yet. May-16-02, 10:20 AM (EDT) 13. "RE: who is doing what?" I am revising and extending Albula Line of the Rhaetische Bahn in the Swiss Alps, with its many twists and turns, tunnels and viaducts. The revision corrects grades and uses more local objects such as Rhaetische Bahn viaducts by Joachim Zander and Rhaetische Bahn gantries by Kami. The extension pushes the line northwest (to Surava), northeast (to Davos) and south (to Bever and perhaps beyond, if I have the energy). In the meantime, a variety of Rhaetische Bahn rolling stock has become available from others (mainly Joachim Zander): these suit the Albula Line perfectly. This is a very detailed and realistic route, so it will take a lot of time to complete!Michael Vone

May-16-02, 11:44 AM (EDT) 17. "RE: who is doing what?" LAST EDITED ON May-16-02 AT 11:45 AM (EDT)I am doing a route from Port Chicago, Ca to Albany Ca. It will include trackage for the SP, the ATSF, the Richmond Belt Line, and probably a bit of Sacramento Northern. It includes the ATSF yard in Richmond, CA, as well as the small SP yard there as well. It will be a hybrid route using track plans from the 70's as well as track info from topo maps from the 90's. Track laying is about 70% done. The SP route is complete to just beyong the Pt. Davis tunnel. The ATSF route is complete to the Muir Trestle. Started in Richmond, CA. The Southern part to Albany is almost complete.Has some scenery but since I live in Atlanta, I have to rely on memory, photos and books for some of the scenery. I do have a track plan book from the ATSF from 1978 that is assisting me as well. Hope to get out there later this year for a full day of photos. At this point I still have my sanity and most of my hair, but that is turning grey very quickly. My wife has not left me yet (or last time I looked she was there) but she wonders what it is about the program that is so addicting. She threatens to report the program to the FDA as a possible addictive product.Thats all folksATSFDUDE Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-16-02, 04:39 PM (EDT) 21. "RE: who is doing what?" I am doing the Georgia Division on NS (former Southern) from Atlanta, GA to Chattanooga, TN. A very busy main line with the new huge Austell intermodal yard already finished. The north side will end at the NMRA headquarters, next to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (Jersey Interlocking). All the track is laid and custom signaled with new NS style signals and scripting. I am flushing out a few key areas with complete scenery, building some custom structures (see algind01.zip just uploaded) and waiting on a track chart I've ordered to confirm my route in a few areas that are impossible to access by foot or auto. I hope to have an early beta release ready in a few months for testing. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Also if you live up that way how about putting that old water tower back up that was near Cocolalla

May-17-02, 05:55 AM (EDT) 29. "RE: who is doing what?" I am working on the Nescio route, a freelance route set somewhere in Central Europe. The Nescio route connects Italy with Switzerland by negotiating a mountain range that is part of the Alps mountains. One route twists and winds through the mountains, up to an altitude of 1250 meters and down again, and a second route stays at ground level, connects the same 2 cities as the first line, but is only accessible for high speed trains like the TGV or the ICE.
The first line is approx. 200 kilomtrs long and the high speed line is appr. 100 kilomtrs. long.
At this moment I am still laying track, but I expect I will start working on the scenery a few weeks from now.

May-17-02, 11:37 AM (EDT) 30. "RE: who is doing what?" I'm tweeking the NEC 2.0 route. I was going to 'put it up' for anyone that's interested, but I see so many doing their own thing now, I think I'll just make it my own now. I've been trying to use only MSTS 'stock' stuff, and put car spawners over every bridge from Washington to Philly - in the right direction. There's so much uneeded clutter and/or misaligned buildings that I think MS placed originally, and with a little clean up and straightening out, it's looking pretty good now.
But I'd like to use some of these buildings of Enocells and others I've discovered - so I think this is where it becomes 'my own model railroad' as I'm no good with 'packing and delivery' - and god forbid all the legalities of trying to put out NEC 2.1 with included buildings and what not.But I enjoy the work almost as much as driving a train now, maybe more? What I'd love to do is recreate what was once known as the Irondale, Bancroft and Ottawa (I, B&O) route just below Algonquin Park in Ontario. It certainly wasn't a 'high action' line, but the scenery is so beautiful and the train line used to hug so many lakes and hillsides. I suppose some great lumber activities could be done, and have a great mix of Grand Trunk and CN equipment (as the I,B&O didn't last long as a name, I believe?) But I'm getting waaaaay ahead of myself for that dream. I just like them scenic slow moving and secluded railroads myself. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 02:40 PM (EDT) 31. "RE: who is doing what?" I'm working on the Duluth & Northeastern between Cloquet and Saginaw, Minnesota as it would have appeared in the early 60's when they were still running steam but pretty much everyone else had gone diesel. The terrain is DEM'ed and the mainline is all there (all 11 miles of it - a nice little starter project to get me up to speed with the route editor), plus the wye and Duluth Missabe & Iron Range interchange in Saginaw. I'm still working on the yard and industrial tracks in Cloquet, and there's not a lot of scenery to speak of yet (I'm going to need A LOT of birch trees), but I'm taking a little break from route-building right now to play around with TSM and build a few locomotives. I have also laid just enough of the DM&IR mainline to make the interchange in Saginaw look right, and eventually I'd like to extend the DM&IR into Proctor yard and down the hill to the ore docks in Duluth.Just out of curiousity, where are you folks finding route data like track gradients, curves, etc.? I laid my track following the markers and just using my own judgement (and topo maps and photos of various points along the line) when it comes to grading the line, but I haven't actually created the cuts or fills yet in case I can get hold of more accurate data and need to make some adjustments. May-20-02, 04:59 PM (EDT) 49. "RE: who is doing what?" I'm a rookie here and just starting - so I try a easy thing: I'm taking the Tehachapi Route and placing objects, traffic etc. I was starting at Mojave and now I'm over the summit coming down to Cable. So far, I'm quite happy. It's not perfect, I'm living thousands of miles away in Switzerland and I'm working with photos from the internet, dozens of books and air photos from the USGS - ready in June. Somebody interested ?
Next I'm doing some activities for the KH and Tehachapi.Badger Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-21-02, 01:48 AM (EDT) 51. "RE: who is doing what?" I have just got the terrain together and just started laying track on the Glenwood Sudivision of the Denver and Rio Grande Western. The route goes from Grand Junction, CO to Dotsero, CO and includes Glenwood canyon. So now everyone can experience the birth place of the vista dome. As soon as I get enough track for an interesting screenshot I will post it.
Making this a reality...

May-21-02, 01:19 PM (EDT) 52. "RE: who is doing what?" At the moment I'm working on my third fictional route. It's all modeling practice for the much more grand ambition of modeling the Feather River route. I'll be making several treks this summer and next summer with my cameras, notepad, rail maps, topo maps, aerial photos and whatever else I can find that's useful and scouting as much of the route as I can access without getting into trouble Then I'll be modeling as much of the scenery as possible. I live in San Francisco during the week but we have a weekend getaway campsite in Berry Creek, near Oroville which is close to the start point where I plan to make my route. May-22-02, 08:47 AM (EDT) 53. "RE: who is doing what?" Myself and Motley24Crue2 are working on the NEC Extension. It will extend the NEC to NYC and Harrisburg in order to tie in to the line being built from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh PA. We are going to make it compatible with the new NEC with the CSX line that the NEC Track Team is building, so once their route is completed our work should really speed up on this route. The NEC Track Team's new NEC should be the deiniitive NEC so we want to make sure our route will work with theirs. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-28-02, 02:32 PM (EDT) 56. "RE: who is doing what?" Isn't that route currently owned by the Missouri and Northern Arkansas? I plan on designing the old route from Carthage to the UP junction at Pleasant Hill since I have railfanned that route many of times. I'm currently working with Nighthawk1 on BNSF's Kansas Division from Emporia to Wellington and Ark City. I am also designing a fictional railroad called the Bridgeport Central Railway Company that is based in Kansas. Someday I hope to get around to doing UP's Golden State Route but I haven't gotten anywhere on that projectAustin

May-31-02, 02:32 AM (EDT) 62. "RE: who is doing what?" http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Bayou/4804/I'm laying out a fictional southwestbound third-rail network out of London. The network will be double-tracked throughout. It will start out as a 10-track route out of a city terminus. So far, the network stretches about 25 miles in length and its (north-)eastern edge of the network is about 15 miles from the city terminus. A couple of miles from the terminus (outbound) the mainline will break off into the following three routes (ONE, TWO, and THREE):ONE}} 4-track locals (two on each side, that is) will sandwich a 2-track semi-local which in turn sandwiches a 2-track express. The locals merge into a 2-track configuration about 10 miles from the terminus; the semi-locals merge into the locals about 20 miles outbound; the express will merge into the locals about 80 miles outbound. This route will end 120 miles outbound, several miles past where I'd like it to hug the central-south coast for a few miles.TWO}} This route runs parallel to ONE just a few miles north. 2-track locals sandwich a 2-track express. After an interchange (with itself) about 30 miles outbound, the tracks pair off and continue on as locals. The southbound pair - a branch, really - merges into route THREE after passing over route ONE; its merge is in the form of a double-tracked wye so that it's possible to continue outbound or return inbound. A station serves as a junction between this branch and ONE. I'm treating the westbound pair as route TWO. It interchanges with ONE about 40 miles outbound only to leave it less than a mile later to resume its own course. A branch also leaves ONE where TWO resumes its course, and interchanges with THREE in the form of another double-tracked wye a few miles onward. Anyhow, TWO will be terminated by being merged into ONE just before where ONE's express tracks merge into its locals (the 80 miles outbound point). I plan on having another branch peel off at about 60 miles outbound to interchange with ONE and then merge into THREE, or I might have THREE do this instead by sending a branch off it to interchange with ONE and then merge into TWO.THREE}} This is a 2-track mainline (local) parallel to ONE but a few miles to the South. A branch will peel off W-bound about 15 miles outbound, and with the help of a flyover will gradually interchange with ONE just before where ONE's semi-locals merge into the locals. About a mile west of this interchange this branch leaves ONE (again, with a flyover) and continues westbound to merge into TWO several miles inbound from the point where TWO peels off into pairs. Also, where this branch of THREE's leaves ONE, another branch leaves ONE (flyover too) to meet up with THREE farther outbound. I plan on merging THREE into ONE about 100 miles outbound.I'm using more curved track than straight for all three routes and branches. This worries me a little because I've a hunch that changing the direction in simulator will compromise the frame rate. I've discovered that six-tracking is labour intensive with all the curving, and that the dynamic-track portions for the fourth and fifth tracks of a curve must be broken up into 20-degree (or is it 10 degrees?) sections at most for smooth joints. I've yet to find out if curvy eight-tracking can be achieved! I haven't gotten around to trying out any viaduct pieces for the flyovers. I'm a little nervous about my double wyes, because at one point I had a full circle in my network and it caused the game to freeze anytime I entered its circuit; so, I'm not too sure about looping out of the city and returning in the very same trip.I'm happy with my signals except (I needn't impart why here, because it seems I've written enough so far) I do need to alter the signal script file with respect to signals that are spaced closely together at junctions to default to green whenever they're inactive (in activities). Do any of you know if a signal can be modified to default to green when inactive, because my simulator keeps signals red anytime they're inactive when I play activities? In other words, do any of you know if changing the aspect that inactive signals default to in activitie can be effected? Would any of you be able to quote me the script string that would accomplish this?I'll shorten traffic paths into sections as opposed to the full length of a route because I notice this activity-programming method doesn't cause the frame rate to diminish as much otherwise. I increased the number of blocks ahead which must be cleared in the signal configuration file for the signals I had in mind. They all function fine now.) Jun-01-02, 11:29 PM (EDT) 65. "RE: who is doing what?" Had to go through all the other replies before typing my own...There is some awesome stuff happenin'Having just purchased MSTS in January or so after being unable to get Trainz to run on any of our primitive computers I haven't got too far. Done some research on the Pennsy from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh and from Philly to New York...Learned enough to know it was a big job...So big in fact that a entire teams of folks are already working on different sections.Presently trying to convince myself to model the Pennsy between Harrisburg and Tyrone (just shy of Altoona). It's the most interesting section to me because it follows the routes of about 4 or 5 different rivers, so I'm kind of hoping no one has gotten it started yet.I'm also working on some buildings and scenery for Philadelphia.I may also have some involvement modeling Louisville & Nashville operations in Middle Tennessee. Don't know enough yet to say for sure. The BIG project is a fictional railroad patterned loosely after the Lehigh Valley and other anthracite hauling railroads in the 19th century. I hope to capture Class 1 railroading just before the Civil War...October, 1859. I especially would like to concentrate on the Lehigh Gorge where the Lehigh Valley and the Jersey Central competed on opposite river banks. There was a TON of railroading in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields with at least a dozen seperate companies running into the same area. Currently the Lehigh & Atlantic operations consist of little more than running small steam engines and short trains over Mariahs Pass and watching them stall on the grades.Frank Musick
