May-16-02, 00:12 AM (EDT) "Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" Project X goals were primarily to create the Florence to Cambridge extension of the OR&W RR. I've reached Cambridge. Cambridge is an interesting city because if you look at the map *points to map* the city is broken up into different sections. If you've been following my site you may have already seen the sneak previews of the southern part of Cambridge. These pics are still available at the site. Those pics just give a very small glimpse into the southern sector part of the city. The pictures I'm going to show you now, which are also available at the site, are of the larger part of Cambridge.
Note that the upcoming release of the route will be build #8. The Florence to Cambridge extension is part of build #9.Rich Garber

May-16-02, 10:32 AM (EDT) 4. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" Heya Bill!Make sure you have the v5 version. There was a couple of changes in these areas:Besco Oil Retrieval siding (just outside the entrance is a passing siding): Two manual switches added so end-around maneuvers could be done without having to move outside the siding). This one will cause broken paths errors if you have paths going through this siding.Mt. Ephraim Coal Mines 4&5: The four signals closest to the mines have been removed. This one is pretty minor. The v5 is located at the top secret underground bunker where you got v4. You may want to check your activities against this version just to make sure you don't get those 'wrong version' errors.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-16-02, 11:09 AM (EDT) 7. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" No teasing meant here Kev, those screen shots are of the real virtual thing. Seriously, I'm being real careful about this release because of a couple of things. First there was a track adjustment in a major area that will invalidate any of the existing activities. Second, I want to coordinate the release of the route with the activity developers so the route doesn't come out just by itself.
Third, these files are just as big as the previous ones and you know what that means to all them dialmodemuppers (new word I just made up, don't try it at home though). Come to think of it, now might be a good time to change my email address to something unlisted. Come to think of it I do need a Windows XP beta tester to see if this new version will run that dos batch file automatically now. I wonder if Bill Gates would be interested.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 02:15 PM (EDT) 13. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" Rich...Absolutley love the route - given its size, I only discovered it a couple of weeks ago - even though on dial up, it was well worth the 3 hour downloads One question, well request really - is there any chance of a small track alignment / rework at the main / Swik interchange, for a couple of holding tracks, so that you can bring materials from the sub-route up the switchbacks and all of the grades to an exchange point for the main line at the main line connection??either way... am enjoying it immencely and am presently trying to plan some steam era activities, but wont get too caried away awaiting Ver8 (any hints as to when ??)Cheers mate from the Land Down Under...OZ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 02:46 PM (EDT) 14. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" Oz,I saw the post where this originally came up where I believe you were refering to timber being hauled out of Swik. I did give it some thought and here's why it really can't be done even if I wanted to do it.That particular area is already signaled and going in and editing track with signals on it is a dangerous thing to do. Sometimes I get lucky like I did in the Besco Oil Retrieval area and nothing goes wrong. In other places, like up at Caldwell, errors come up and changes can't be made. That's the first hiderance.Another problem with that area is the tracks on both the mainline and the track leading from the mainline to Swik is all graded. If you ever tried laying tracks after track has already been laid in an area like that, it's real hard getting your new tracks to match your old tracks. If I were to do it now, I would have to flatten the grade which could make the cut into the hillside in places too deep than I would have, as the railroad surveryor, wanted to. Would've been too expensive IMO.The mainline would probably be the best place to make this addition but the problem there is worse because of the multitude of signals in that area. Plus any holding area of sorts is problematic because the crossovers on the mainline are pretty close heading in the southernly direction.A change like that even if it could be done would be too extensive for #8. The reason I say that is any change I make in #8 I have to duplicate in #9 which is the version I have. So that change wouldn't take effect until #9 anyway. If I make a change in #8 and I don't duplicate it exactly in #9, you'll get broken path errors.I'll look into this again though. But I meant to ask why you would want holding tracks for that area anyway? Swik is just a small coal town that was only meant to receive trains whose length would be no greater than 8 to 10 cars anyhow. There are storage tracks in Swik already and the passing siding at the wye there just before the coal mine is just for that purpose. It's unfortunate I'm so busy because I don't have the time to deseminate this information to you all and expand the route. What I would have liked to have done if I xtracks was advanced then as it is now back when I was doing Swik would have been to create Swik with all narrow gauge track. I would have added a transfer station where goods shipped from Marietta or elsewhere could be deposited and the narrow gauge line would pick up.Rich Garber

May-17-02, 03:47 PM (EDT) 15. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" Rich...Thanks mate for the update... I looked at running a small consist with a handfull of cars up the grade from Swik to the main line. Given the grades, only small consists possible. My thoughts were to run possibly to the top of the grades at the main line connection for interchange. Aty present, the interchange is still well down the grades. Please beleive me, this is absolutley NO critisism, just a frustrated "wannabee's" observations. What is it they say... "those that cant do... whinge !!"Cheers, and thanks again - looking forward to Ver 8Oz Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May-17-02, 04:37 PM (EDT) 16. "RE: Ohio Rail update: Ever been to Cambridge?" There were three places I had hoped narrow gauage would have been possible, actually four. Two up at Zanesville, one at Swik and one at Unionville. Possibly the second log mining camp but I figured it be too small for a narrow gauge route. If I had been able to do so the trackage in those areas would have been somewhat different.I also think an interchange on that grade on the mainline would have been fatal for our steamers. From a standing start up that grade, I think the best you could get would be going backwards down the hill.I'm afraid I made the route to steep in places for most of our steamers (from a standing start). If you got a good head of steam going most hills are negotiable with one steam engine. But again, only with a shortened train.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
