I know I saw this somewhere, but either I'm not using the right keywords or the thread I'm thinking of is gone. Anybody remember what causes objects to vanish when viewed close up or at sharp angles?I used Shape File Manager to clone the us2woodbox.s and the freight_grey.s objects for walls, making them half the width, and four times the length and height. I started with the freight_grey.s, which works well for a roof because it has a bottom (the concrete slabs don't), and when I noticed this effect I changed to the US2woodbox.s, same problem. Joint between two walls is shown by yellow arrow:Dissappearing textures at some angles? – image 1Now you see it, but turn the view slightly;Dissappearing textures at some angles? – image 2and now you don't.Something to do with LOD I think, there's a way to adjust distance levels in SFM, but nothing to tell me what the object already has.

RE: Dissappearing textures at some angles?

Hi Jim
You might find that you need to check and adjust the shape_header units in the .s file.
This has been reported on the UK site before and may work for you.
Uncompress the shape file and look for the vector line near the bottom of the first section.
It may read something like:vector ( -0.136974 5.09016 0.0298552) 6.73112The last set of numbers needs to be increased by 10 e.g. 16.73112Now I can't remember if this is only used for low numbers such as 0.73112 or for any set of numbers where the object vanishes.
Can't hurt to try it anyway.
Cheers

RE: Dissappearing textures at some angles?

I had a covered bridge I adjusted with SFM to twice it's length and half the height. It started the "Now you see me, now you don't."
Tried your suggestion. The vector entry is;vector ( -0.000549 0.000152 -0.000579 ) 29.1275Changed it to 39, but it didn't help. Still disappears.
Just thought I'd mention my experience, for reference only, of course. Hawk

Last night I heard an old freight whistle blow, as I was sleeping warmly in your bed-And it told me "Boy, it's time that you was packin' up to go.", but I smiled and shook the leavin' from my head.

The volume sphere sounds like the suspect but just increasing it by ten might not be the solution. You actually need some insight to what you are doing!
The volume sphere is used to calculate if the object is in the line of view (aka on screen). You should think of it as the radious of a sphere positioned at with its center at the origin of the shape. This sphere should fully enclose the object or you could get this kind of problem when looking at parts protruding outside of this imagined sphere cause MSTS thinks it's out of sight and therefore does not need to be drawn.
TSM does a lousy job of calculating this value if the origin of the shape is not in the middle of the shape (ex track shapes). I don't think SFM alters this value when you rescale objects and that is your problem when largely distorting objects.
Recalculating this value solves the problem. If you are unsure how to calculate it you could simply try with some values. The largest value of width, height and length can serve as a guide even though that will probably mean MSTS will draw it even though it is slightly out of view.

RE: Dissappearing textures at some angles?

I totally agree to Okrasa's words. In my expirience (tracks) largest dimension plus 10% sometimes a bit tight, always on secure side largest dimension plus 20%

RE: Dissappearing textures at some angles?

I'd totally agree with Okrasa's words too, if I understood what the hell he was talking about. Obviously this is a bit too scientific for a simple hacker like me (I flunked high school algebra twice), so I'm stuck with trial and error. FWIW, I solved the problem by finding another object nearer the dimensions I wanted, the US2metalbarrier.s.Dissappearing textures at some angles? – image 5The US2freight_grey.s stretched length and width with the default height works just fine for the roof, but when I tried to stretch length and height with the default width it gives me that sphere thingamy you're talking about. For the US2metalbarrier it already had the length and width I was looking for with a wall, so all I had to do was increase the height. Some screenies of the end result:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/3587.htmlOne little trick, after placing static trains and adjusting the height of the roof to clear them, I went back into Shape File Manager and shifted it to reset the default height to +6 meters, so I don't have to fiddle around and check clearances, just place on the track and it's automatically at the correct height.
