Turning on a dime – image 1

Continuing from my "Something else ..." post http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/11926.htmlUsing a more obvious engine, it is seen all the time through the turn.
(did you know that Speedster has one boogie? I didn't before)

It works like an extremely tight Y-track and looks best with a Speedster or trolley.Using the same techique I can also make an extremely tight return loop for turning an engine.
But, it is still obvious it is a return loop and it does look odd when the engine goes through.
(too odd to show on piture )

RE: Turning on a dime

I saw an engine do that once-'course I think it was during a drug induced state of surrealism. Nice tweak, but I have a question. Not being sarcastic, just inquisitive. What purpose would there be for that phenomenon? Hawk

Last night I heard an old freight whistle blow, as I was sleeping warmly in your bed-And it told me "Boy, it's time that you was packin' up to go.", but I smiled and shook the leavin' from my head.

As replied by the others this kind of track is prototypical.
Track gangs and other crews going over the line in a Speedster or Trolley need to get that out of the way to let ordinary trains by. If there isn't a station or siding nearby this is a problem. One solution used is that the Speedster has a built in turntable which it carries with it. That turntable can be lowered to the ground letting you turn the Speedster 90° and roll it onto this track (works kind of like your monitor stand). If the Trolley is verry light you don't need the turntable but can lift it off the track but it's still easier if you have this kind of track nearby, then you only need to lift it 90° not carry it any distance.
Putting in this kind of track at strategic locations for the track gangs was much cheaper than putting in a siding. Only a couple of rails and the Speedster/Trolley is light compared to an ordinary engine thus no need for mainline standard for that short track.

RE: Turning on a dime

This is an interesting concept. I'm wondering now if it wouldn't be possible to use this concept with some invisible track/switches (pioneered by Sniper I think) and some animated objects to build the illusion of a working turntable. We have already seen illusions that nobody thought possible in SeaView.Perhaps we have written off turntables as being impossible too soon!
If we got you, Jim and Bill all collaborating on that...boggles my mind!Larry
