GM&O route will not open, nor do I get the right files

Hey all, Is anyone else having trouble downloading and opening the newest GM&O route files? I have Winzip 9, so I am up to date, but the files I get from TS will NOT open for me, plus most of them don't come through as zip files anyway. HELP!!!!!!

They are probably a spanned file set. Only one will be a .zip file the others are extensions of that file (z01, z02, etc). Put all the files together in a temporary folder and unzip the .zip file and it should unzip the rest automatically.Regards,Eric

You only unzip the file with the .zip extension. The others are called up as needed by the unzipping process. There are a total of eight files. I'm amazed you were able to get them downloaded so quickly!You can also use RouteRiter to unzip as well...JBD

JD,I have downloaded the main zip file 4 times on two different computers. Everytime I have run it, I either get "corrupted file" or "not a valid archive" from Winzip 8.1. I have also downloaded the 8 spanned zip files, which, as of now appear to be okay, but I don't know because the zip file doesn't even start! By the way, everything has been done per instructions in your other post.I don't know if others are having the same problem, but is there a possibility you could try reuploading the zip file?

As others seem to be reporting getting it to unzip OK I'd have to say the problem is probably the result of your browser adding an additional .zip extension to the spanned files (.z01, etc.).Do NOTHING to those files. Please see the various posts on unzipping spanned files and the requirements/processes to follow....JBD

Looked at all of that, still no luck. Looks like it might be a problem with the way my home computer reads the zip file itself. The one at work reads it, the home one does not. I think what I'm going to do next is try to redownload all the files to another computer. Unzip the basic folder on that one, and then copy it to CD and then to my MSTS computer at home, and run the install.bat there.

It SHOULD work on both computers. Remember, you can NOT use the built-in unzipping function of Windows. You MUST use WinZip, WinRAR, or RouteRiter.JBD

Using winzip. Tried to unzip files like I said above. It gets part of the way and gives me this error (2 tries, 2 different copies of the zip file): "Winzip internal error in file zipio.c line 1378", then quits.Sorry to keep bugging you about this. I may just wind up asking you to send me a CD copy of the route.

I have tracked down the above error to the primary zip file gmonlv10.zip. The ziped up file which is hanging it up is called OATSFFCars.Ace. The unzipping operation stops there and goes no further, giving an error message on this file.

After numerous attempts to download a workable zip file and associated spanned zips, running it different ways as suggested in the spanned zip post, it continues to fail. I am giving up. I guess this is one route I will not have running in my MSTS.

Jim, No matter what I try, I can't get them to open. I try the main zip, and it keeps asking me where part one is..I do that, and it errors. ANy further help appreciated....I have no idea what I am doing wrong.

Charlie, Jim, I tried it that way, and I get the location of the archive is the same..use it anyway? When I say yes, it crashes. Might just be easier to have yo burn it and send it to me Jim!!

In the ATSF Marceline release a couple of people had trouble when using IE5 to download. The browser added an extra '.zip' to the file names resulting in a name such as "filename.z01.zip".Renaming the files and editing off the added .zip fixed the problem...JBD

I had that too (train-world init. failure notice) and I think it was because I didn't have Kosmos loaded. Anyway I have Kosmos D/L'd now and will try again. This is the firt route I have seen that required Kosmos and I have never bothered with it. Unfortunately with these complex spanned zips the readme is usually not available untill you do the install which is too late. Jim did post the readme on the board which was nice, I just completely missed the Kosmos thing.Be Seeing you.

Kosmos, huh, WEll, I am not a big fan of it. It seems to be a framerate killer to me. ALso, some routes just flat out crash when you use it. I have it installed, and will add it just to see what happens.Back later!

Train world init..... hmmmmmObvious question: Did you run the InstallMe batch file? This is usually the reason for this error. It may also be the result of the problems you had in downloading. You may have corrupted one of the spanned files.... I know it's a pain but you might want to try pulling it down again and start over....Re: Kosmos "required".... I put the verbiage in just to cover my tail with regard to the environment files. I THINK I have all defaults there but just in case....C.M.A.Will be unavailable to answer questions now until VERY late Wednesday evening.... Off to foam in E. St. Louis tonight/tomorrow....JBD

Thanks Jim. I definately ran the bat but after reading the Readme I figured the lack of Kosmos might be the problem, I did pull a fresh D/L today and put them on a CD so I'll try a new install. Are yo saying that Kosmos is not required????I think I'll load Kosmos tonight anyway and try it out.Be Seeing you.

HEy, Put in Kosmos, and it works now. Wierd...Looked like a plane flying/crashing too. OK, only problem I see now is the sideways telepoles..LOL But I think Jim and I covered that! LAter! And thanks guys!!!

NYC 4017 is from TA if I am remembering right. The route is worth the hassle if you like the GM&O..and it is HUGE!!Lots of possibilities!!!!

To get around the consist problem in a quick and easy manner, I saved the contents of the Activities, Services, and Traffic folders by copying them elsewhere, and then deleting the contents from the originals. Paths can remain. The saved folders may not even be necessary because I believe Jim intends to replace them, but the new ones might still require consists you don't have.The key is to get rid of (or alter) the components that require consists you don't have. There are other techniques to get around this problem including the use of one of several special utilities available to handle consists, but this is an approach you might try if you don't have them.Now, you can start the Sim and use Explore to pick whatever equipment and starting point from whatever shows up in the lists. You could also create a new activity using the Activity Editor to select from your own consist/equipment, and select one of the existing paths or create your own.This worked for me so that I could start the Sim and AE without all the warning messages about the consists originally specified by the supplied Activities, Services, and Traffic folders. It might work for you if you aren't already past this point.Chuck Rickert

If you dump the contents of the activity, service, & traffic folders like I did you'll need to go into the AE and create a Dummy Activity. There's something in MSTS that makes it just absolutely gag if you try to load a route with no activities, doesn't have to be fancy. Just setup something like having a GP38 go 200 feet down the track. I always forget and get Send/Don't Send until I do this.
Also you you need newroads 3.0, had 1.0 which this route did not like.

Thanks my friends for the feedback on the possible problems. NYC 4017 is a problem for now. MSTS starts loading and then says that I am missing NYC 4017. Continue: yes or no. If I click yes it continue to load and the bar gets almost to the right and I then get the famous Send/Don't Send message. Can someone tell me what consist this engine is in so I can get rid of the dang thing. Please with sugar on it?Thanks,CSK

I'm using IE6 SP-1 and the first of the files I downloaded (it happened to be the .z01 file) had a .zip appended to the filename, so it doesn't seem to be limited to IE5.

Folks, bear in mind that this IS still a work in progress. I've discovered a couple of problems that I'm working on currently....* North end of Springfield.... I put the shapes in the wrong world file after I finished track/signal work. MAJOR problem sorting this one out but CAN be done pretty quickly.... This is why you find weird roads and trees in the track! Also why the scenery promptly disappears just south of Ridgely Tower until you get to the State Capitol...* Terrain in a couple places west of Bloomington on the Jack Line...Quick n easy fix...* East connection of the east wye at St. Louis Union Station: Inbound moves are all good but outbound MUST take the first slip switch diverging route on to track #1 to go east.... Run through and try to throw the second or third puzzle and you'll phone home in a heart beat! Got several inquiries out about how to solve this problem.... Have already removed and relaid the entire thing 3 times with NO success.... Will probably go back to some sort of modified wye connection forcing some non-prototypical track assignments in the east half of the station but better that than crashing...* Eads Bridge placed and looking good. WOULD have had a bunch of pix from east end of Eads/Q Tower/Bridge Junction/Relay Depot Wednesday but got asked (VERY nicely, I should add!) to not be there by TRRA cop. Apparently some special security warning is up that wasn't up a week ago.... anyway, will try again for more pix in two weeks... Also working on MacArthur bridge route and 7th St. Subway route to SLUST...Working on a GM&O Doodlebug re-skin of the Seaview Doodlebug which is coupled to a nice little 2-hour activity taking the Puddlejumper down the Jack Line to Roodhouse with several AI trains in Bloomington and at the various crossings and over/underpasses along the Jack Line... SHOULD be posting a patch in a couple of days with fixed world files, tiles, and the Puddlejumper activity and doodlebug included! A couple of teaser shots follow....BTW: Thanks for the many nice comments to date and the helpful "didja know about this" emails!JBD#1 -- Train #9 sits patiently awaiting it 8:05 a.m. highball while Peoria & Eastern's "Peoria Flyer" makes it's connection at Bloomington.#2 -- While the passenger, mail and express get serviced a Nickel Plate local train passes by westbound.#3 -- The NKP local is pulling a crane today, possibly for some heavy track or bridge maintenance up around Peopria!#4 -- As the P&E pulls out of the station eastbound the NKP's hack pops into view...#5 -- The conductor has given #9 it's highball and we're off on our 12-hour rustic trek toward Kansas City as GM&O Train #29 (running extra this morning) slows for the crew change at Bloomington Union Station...#6 -- As we pull west out of the station and past the Beich Candy plant, train 29 is just starting to pull south from the station with a fresh crew on its way to Venice Yard in E. St. Louis.
