What's the size of a sub-tile? – image 1

I know I've seen the answer somewhere but my search thru the archives missed it... so, would somebody please remind me what is the actual size of a sub-tile (i.e., the length or width of one side of the black edged square covered by terrain.ace)?I'm messing around with a shape that uses terrain.ace but of course the color density is different as the shape is so much smaller than the subtile. I figure if I reduce the number of used texture pixels for the length of that shape to it's percentage of the length of a subtile then the texturing will come out with a nearly identical appearance.TIA for the answer.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 95% complete;

RE: What's the size of a sub-tile?

Each tile is 2048 meters on a side and there are 16 subtiles on each side so each subtile is 2048/16 = 128 meters.Jim

Hmmm. My hunch of using the percentage of a 512 x 512 texture on a 100m object didn't work at all -- well it did texture it but it doesn't look at all like the ground covered by terrain.ace.Anybody got any ideas what the sim does with terrain.ace to achieve the "pixilation" effect that is so visible? Each subtile does use the full 512x512 texture in full (judging by visible patterns as seen on the edges of the .ace file).Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 95% complete;

RE: What's the size of a sub-tile?

Another way to look at a terrtex texture ace;512 x 512 pixel tile, each pixel is about 9.8" in size
1024 x 1024, each pixel is about 4.9" in size

RE: What's the size of a sub-tile?

2048 meters per tile - 256 terrtex per tile - 16 terrtex per side - 128 meters per subtile.Therefore;0.5 meters per pixel for a 256x256 texture.
0.25 meters per pixel at a 512x512 texture.Note, you can subdivide or tile a terrtex for courser or finer detail.I don't recomment using any textures over 512k. The size will hog resources and won't work on low end systems.SRV Ron

Ron,
if I take a 100m long shape and specify 400 pixels from terrain.ace the resulting appearance is different fom the appearance of the terrain.What's the size of a sub-tile? – image 6Any suggestions?The shape is a subroadbed -- a berm -- of two parts, the top is wrapped over the edges a metre or so; edges are on a 1.5:1 slope per DRGW (and others) standards. I've not yet added the alpha channel for the dirt top to allow it blend it in with the dry grass slope.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 95% complete;

You'll need to specify a new texture for the object, and combine the image of the microtex and the terrain using layers. Best to set the microtext as the base, adjust the contrast to darken, and then add the terrain image over it using a semi-transparnet layer. Cheers!

Speaking of Microtex, My old Voodoo vid card would never display it, unless i forced MIP mapping on the drivers level, I still see alot of screen shots with it off too

I didn't know about microtex.ace. Now that I've looked at it I know where those unwanted green tones are coming from, poking their way up thru my golden California grass.So what's the secret w/ microtex.ace? When I de-saturated it and recreated the .ace file for use w/ Terrain.ace the result in the Sim is horrible -- as it is fine within a few metres of the camera and viewing out farther away is simply wierd looking -- progressively *much* darker. I know wierd isn't very specific but the adjactive is correct in this case. Here's the original on the right and the desaturated one on the left, both at 600x:What's the size of a sub-tile? – image 12I think the green cast is still visible here at this resolution....Anyway, I saw microtex.ace is only 256x256. It had green so it has to be in color. What else do I need to know about it to get it to work?TIADave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 95% complete;

I couldn't get results like this without using 1024 terrtex tiles, and a few buildings cause a much greater frame hit. I'm running an old computer, 1 gig Athlon, 512 RAM, NvidiaTNT32 card, and with short narrow gauge trains, I see a drop from 14 to 12 or 13 fps, when I hit the big terrtex tiles.What's the size of a sub-tile? – image 14The waterfall and rocks are all on the terrtex tile.
