We know from the comment above the engine variables what they are suppose to stand for, but how are they dervived? EX: GWR Green Tank 4-4-2 Comment (fire temp, water mass, boiler pressure, water level, tender_water_mass, tender_coal_mass, smoke_quantity, fire_condition, coal quality) EngineVariables (760 1000 3000 160 0.5 13000 6600 400 1 2 ) Thanks for any help Teacherpat
Coal Quality? It's possible to make bad coal with MSTS?

Yes. Coal properties vary by huge amounts. Boilers were designed with this in mind. Kevin Arceneaux DEFAULT IS FOR DUMMIES Cry havoc and Let slip the dogs of war. Lone Wolf Activities Forum and Activity Packs are on www.3DTrains.com
There are actually 10 Engine Variables, (There may be even more, but what they are is burried in the minds of Kuju)fire temp: This is the initial temperature of the fire, if you are starting the locomotive from the engine house (engine shed) you may want to use a low figure of say 700 deg F, if you start from the station on a train you may wish to use 900 deg F fire mass:This is the quantity of coal in the firebox at the start, usually somewhere around the IdealFireMass is goodwater mass:This is understood to be the weight of the volume of water in the section of the boiler covered by the gauge glass, so I use MaxWaterMass divided by 1.3 for this entry which should correspond to a full gauge glass on level track.boiler pressure:The initial boiler pressure, I usually set this at 95% of the Max Boiler Pressure, but like fire temp a lower value for starting from the engine housewater level:1 = full gauge glass and seems a little redundent since "water mass" appears to have the same effecttender_water_mass:The number of pounds of water in the tender at start.tender_coal_mass:This is misnamed in the simulator, it appears to be a factor and 1.0 is a good value, but it will require a couple of other changes to get the best results which should allow clean firing without the thick black smoke when firing manually as follows:In the main .eng parameters:ShovelCoalMass ( 10lb ) SteamFiremanMaxConstantFiringRate( 3000 )SteamFiremanMaxPossibleFiringRate( 6000 )In the engine controllers:Shovel ( 0 1 1 0 NumNotches ( 6 Notch ( 0 0 Dummy ) Notch ( 0.25 0 Dummy ) Notch ( 0.5 0 Dummy ) Notch ( 0.75 0 Dummy ) Notch ( 1 0 Dummy ) Notch ( 2 0 Dummy ) ) )
smoke_quantity:This appears to be cosmetic, I have been using 100fire_condition:How effectivly the fireman is at keeping the fire burning for optimum performance I use factors from 0.8 to 1.0 depending on fireman's presumed skill.coal quality:This refers to the BTU's generated by the coal and is expressed as a factor, Best Welsh Steam Coal which is one of the world standards although not much is mined today gets a factor of 0.9, normal locomotive coal 0.85 and if you burn lignite or some other low grade you may go down to about 0.6As always, before screwing with the .eng file, save your original file elsewhere in case you need to recover it
