RE: Southern BigJohn Hopper from TKW!!!

The Southern wanted to increase the size of cars on their lines and offer discounted rates. This ended up being a huge mess, all the other RR's fought them over this and the ICC ruled against them. It ended up in the Federal Courts. All the way to the Supreme court which ruled in Southerns favor.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Southern BigJohn Hopper from TKW!!!

Shrinkage and creative math.....
BJ=BigJohn
SBJ = SuperBigJohnfrom the first site it says (1963)
blah, blah save money.....
"will carry as much as 110 tons of feed corn."
so BJ= 110*2000 => 220,000lb capacityfrom the second site it says (1965)
blah, blah save money, bigger better.....
SBJ = "load-carrying capacity of 5,325 cubic feet"
SBJ = "8 per cent greater than Southern's original 100-ton-capacity"
SBJ = "capable of carrying some 230,000 pounds each." so in two years, the origional cars deteriorated by 10tons (20,000lbs capacity)???1.08*220,000 = 237,600lbs
1.08*200,000 = 216,000lbs3rd site
BJ = 5,200 ft^3Modern hopper car sizes...
hmmmm. oddly enough when you order a grain car from CN they don't tell you how big it is.....
http://www.cn.ca/PDF/Car_ordering_instructions_2003.pdfwhile leasing a car from GE, they appear to be a lot more helpfull
http://www.ge.com/capital/rail/equipment/cvdhop/chspecsheets.shtml
http://www.ge.com/capital/rail/equipment/cvdhop/specs/chspec4.shtmlso the largest gravity covered hopper they have is 5,150 cu. ft.,
223,500lb payload weight.(or a press-diff of 5,750cuft, 223,500lb payload weight.)so that answers my question that - no there has been no significant increase in covered hopper car size since the 1960's...MattSouthern BigJohn Hopper from TKW! – image 17

Matt, you have to remember back when these cars first came out it was a revolutionary idea. That a RR was actually thinking outside the box. Up untill the 90's, there were still area's in Canada the had very light axle loadings that only grain boxcars could be used. While you may think that size hasn't increased, it is not the result of stagnant car tech, but of load limits of sidings and trackage. There are grants and loans being made to upgrade tracks to handle the 120t cars. They still cannot be used on many branches. Kevin Arceneaux

They still cannot be used on many branches. thanks for the above information, although I am already familliar with most of it.most of the my previous exercise was to determine if any noteable size increase has been made since the introduction of these Big John cars, because they look as if they have maxed out the covered hopper design constraints -
--can't go any wider
--if length is increased beyond their 60', then may get a lot of 'saggage' in the middle that will take costly reinforcement
--may have a few extra feet of height that can be added, but would be oversized height... and then the extra weight would bump up against your point of axle loadings which 'could' be overcome with -more axles- (I believe has been tried w/ an articualeted graincar concept - but that was in the further quest of more capacity).>>still area's in Canada the had very light axle loadings.also in Kansas, where some of the lines are also de-volving nicely
1960's CRIP~70mph, 2000's KYLE~10mph.>>Canada /only grain boxcars could be used
They actually still used grain boxes in the 1990's?I thought the use of grain-boxes was determined by the grain elevator not being configured to accept hopper type cars. And if they did have lighter axle loadings, the grain-hopper cars were only partially filled.

"I thought the use of grain-boxes was determined by the grain elevator not being configured to accept hopper type cars. And if they did have lighter axle loadings, the grain-hopper cars were only partially filled."Nope, it was due to axle loadings and the limits on what cars the elevators could accept for loading. They kept a few grain boxes just for these lines. It came to the point that they were losing too much money and either forced the elevators to either accept hoppers andpay for the infrastructure improvements or start trucking grain to a central super elevator. Pete:Just a thought - since the car numbers are so big, it'll be easy to spot duplicates. Would it be practical to include a bitmap with the numbers 0-9 so some of us could try our hand at a cut and paste reskin using tgatools?Of course if you want to release a string of cars with different numbers, that would be just fine Thanks a million - again!Mark
