Spokane, Portland and Seattle engine no. 700 for MSTS is now available for download. The above screenshot is just a sample. See the Screenshot Forum here: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID15/945.html and take a virtual tour at the controls of this historic locomotive.About SP&S 700In 1938 The SP&S took delivery of three 4-8-4 Northerns, numbered 700, 701 and 702, from Baldwin Locomotive Works. Locomotive 700 was used mainly for passenger service and continued to pull passenger trains, including the Empire Builder and the North Coast Limited, into the early 1950s. In 1956, the SP&S spruced up the 700 and sent it out for one last run. The "farewell to steam" excursion attracted hundreds of passengers. In a reversal of fortune, this event marked a new beginning for the locomotive.Today, SP&S 700 is the third largest operating steam locomotive in North America. It is owned by the City of Portland, Oregon, and it is maintained and operated by the dedicated men and women of the Pacific Railroad Preservation Association, or PRPA. SP&S 700 has its own web site at http://www.sps700.org. There you will find more information about the locomotive, including its history and its physical properties. The site also has numerous photo galleries featuring various SP&S 700 railfan excursions, and depicting ongoing maintenance activities.About the ModelsPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 2
There are three locomotive models in the download package. The primary model is fully detailed and has a poly count that's on a par with most other well detailed MSTS steam locomotives. The second model is less detailed and is intended for less powerful PC systems, but it's still very presentable. The third model is the detailed version with the addition of two crew figures. All models have multiple LODs for conserving your computer resources in distant views.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 3
Three cab views are provided. One is the customary engineer’s view (shown above) which you will use most of the time. Only the engineer's controls are accessible in this view, although you can access the fireman's controls using the usual MSTS shortcut keys. The second view is an overall one with access to both the engineer's and the fireman's controls. The third view is again from the engineer's vantage point, but it is lit the way the cab would be during night-time running.Custom sounds are included. Whistle, bell and steam-exhaust sounds, the latter synchronized with the driver motion, are recorded from the prototype.Physical properties in the file SPS_700.ENG reflect the prototype wherever possible. This includes such parameters as mass, cylinder dimensions, tractive effort, fuel and water capacity and so forth. The fact that the 700 is fired with heavy oil poses an interesting problem since MSTS is programmed as if all steam locomotives were fired with coal. To compensate, all coal-related parameters are converted to reflect the equivalent energy content and mass of fuel oil.SP&S 700 Tools - an Added BonusAlso included in the package is SP&S 700 Tools, a Windows application that makes it convenient for you to expand the flexibility of the model. The program consists of four modules.-- Options – lets you select among the different versions of the models and cab.
-- Create a Consist – make a new consist for SP&S 700 using your existing rolling stock, without having to use the MSTS Activity Editor.
-- Clone a Consist – make a copy of an existing consist and substitute SP&S 700 into the copy.
-- Clone an Activity – make a copy of an existing activity and substitute SP&S 700 into the copy.Your Help is Needed!PRPA needs your financial support to keep the real-life SP&S 700 running. The download version of this package is offered as "conscienceware." This means that if you acquire it you do so with the clear intention of supporting PRPA's preservation efforts (won't you!!). You can help PRPA by becoming a member of the organization itself, or by purchasing 700-theme books, videos, clothing and other items from their on-line concession stand. All contributions and purchases are fully tax deductible. For details, see http://www.sps700.org/help.html.This was a fun project for me. I learned a lot, but there's so much more to learn, and that's what makes it even more fun. Enjoy SP&S 700 for MSTS and please support the continued preservation of its prototype.

I would love to D/L it. To bad I don't have any money. So I guess there ain't gonna be any for me. Ah'well I guess that I should learn not to beg for things I can't have. (I am however the one who started the donationware thread.)
But it looks realy great.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-24-03 AT 11:21 AM (EDT)

That's just downright gorgeous Rick! Stunning! Definetely a must have just from looking at the visuals!! Thanks much for your effort! It's kinda ironic too because I purchased a Northern for my N scale layout. The wheel base was large enough it couldn't negiotate my sharp turn radii. Really looking forward to seeing SP700 run the rails.I'll post your request for donations to the SP700 on my site too. Thanks again!Rich Garber*edit* Okay done... www.edmfamily.com/msts/news.htm

Excuse me for a moment while I pick my jaw up off the floor! What can I say other than absolutely gorgeous! You said this was the third largest operating steamer in the U.S. I'm assuming one of the ones that's bigger is UP's Challenger. What's the other one, SP 4449? Just curious. Great work Rick!GrizzlyPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 60 Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 61

RE: New Big Steam - SP&S 700

All: Thanks for all of your compliments. They are much appreciated. I hope you enjoy running it. There are a number of passenger sets out there. I like the Empire Builder myself and it's prototypical. I also like to run period freight trains as the screen shots show. It'll look right at home on Cal R's Columbia Gorge route.Tom P: Actually, it depends on how you measure "large." I'll let the experts explain: http://www.sps700.org/locostats.html Be sure to check out the rest of the site, too.Mike V: No particular plans except the one you already know about.Rich G: Very thoughtful of you to add the PRPA plug to your web site. It's SP&S, though, not to be confused with SP as in Southern Pacific. The SP&S was part of the Northern Pacific and Great Northern family but it disappeared along with its parents into the BN merger. More at: http://www.sps700.org/spshist.htmlMike A: Yeah, I kinda went over the top with the colors, but that was intentional. I like the look of grimy, beat up workhorse locos the most, I suppose. But the 700 always sports a new paint job when they take her out on excursions, so I figured that's how I'd portray her. You should see her after she gets back home, though. Disgraceful!Rick

RE: New Big Steam - SP&S 700

Hi Rick, first of all THANKS A LOT for creating this beautyful engine! As I'm from Germany I have never seen an american steam-loco in reality. So here's a question that I'd like to ask you: is the sound you used for your model the original sound of the locomotive?? Compared to others (especially to some german ones of the same size) it seems to sound a little "thin" (don't know a better word for what I mean).Very interested:Woelferl

RE: New Big Steam - SP&S 700

Woelferl,That's really what it sounds like! What you hear is the abrupt expansion of high-pressure steam displacing air and causing a pressure wave. It's almost like a series of explosive barks with a lot of hissing mixed in. As the speed increases the sounds blend together almost as a continuum.I don't know for sure, but I'd speculate that the deeper sound you are referring to may be the acoustic result of the different exhaust cavity design. Sort of along the same principle of an organ pipe - it's the same compressed air going into each pipe but a different sound coming out depending on the shape, length and diameter of the pipe.Rick
