Spokane Portland & Seattle locomotive no. 700 is steaming into a town near you. Let's take a virtual excursion to some of the places where the real-life 700 never gets to go.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 1

OK. We made the schedule and dropped off the consist. The crew is finished for the day so I get to take over the controls!Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 10
Hmmmmm...Let's see...Anybody know how to start this thing? Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 11
Did you say stall 4, Rich? Big steam is nice, but I think we've got a problem. Thinking back, though, not the kind of problem we had on another excursion a year ago on a different route far from home:

Uh oh! Much bigger problem here!Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 13
Enjoyed the tour, Hideto-san, but I guess I'll leave your lovely scenic railway to this little guy.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 14

This is a post regarding the water color in the cab pics. Is the water in the boiler discolored or is it pee-pee? Hey, I just wanna know alright. Great looking engine btw./Jonatan

RE: New Big Steam - SP&S 700

Actually you were spot on. It's the latter. It's a little known fact, for obvious reasons, that in the 1950s passenger trains - and the 700 was primarily a passenger engine - used to pump the contents of the privys directly to the boiler. It turns out that this liquid has just about the right pH for preventing the buildup of scale, and some of the other constituents are effective as corrosion inhibitors as well. Results varied, of course, depending on what was on the menu in the dining cars and whether or not there was a bar car.More facts from railroading's colorful past!Rick
