Here's my favourite form of commuter railway equipment. The two motor cars are swingdoor "dogbox" cars and the trailer car in the middle is a sliding door "Tait" car. The leading car is over 100 years old, while the other two are over 90 years old. All are operated by the Elecrail division of Steamrail, which is a volunteer non-profit preservation society. For more info about Steamrail (& Elecrail) go to http://www.steamrail.com.au/)107M entered service on 12/10/1888 as a steam hauled carriage. It was converted into an electric motor car in 1920. It was withdrawn in 1974. During it's time in storage at Newport, the driving cab was severely damaged in a shunting accident. After years of restoration by Elecrail volunteers, it returned to service in 1987.137M entered service on 26/10/1907 as a steam hauled car. It was converted into an electric motor car in 1920. It was withdrawn in 1974. Elecrail restored this car after 107M and it returned to service in 2001.208T is a "Tait" trailer car. These are more modern than the Swindoor cars, but not by much. This entered service in 1910, and was withdrawn in 1984. V/Line restored it in 1985 as part of a four car Tait set for Victoria's 150th anniversary. This set is now in the care of Elecrail. The dedicated volunteers at Elecrail are now restoring trailer car 12BT to service so there will eventually be a 3 car set. They are also considering the restoration of a D driving trailer car to go with these. If you're ever in Melbourne, Australia and Elecrail are running a trip, I would highly recommend it. The work that has gone into the restoration of these cars is amazing, especially when you consider that it is done fully by volunteers. Elecrail run around two to three tours a year. The photo was taken on a recent tour. For more images of this and other Melbourne "sparks", go to my site at http://www.railpage.org.au/vr/ and look in the Electric trains gallery --Victorian Railfan Web Site:

Kyle,$1.59 a gallon? I WISH the gas was that much here in California! Right now, where I live in southern CA it is about $1.89 for the low grade in most places! But then, I've been told that we get charged twice as much as everyone else in the rest of the country for everything else, so why not gas too? Oh, and too I've just heard that our wonderful governor is going to raise college tuitions, even in the community colleges. Great. We students are always one of the first ones to get hit when the state has money problems. Anyway, I'm sorry for getting off the topic! What is my favorite, or one of my favorite types of commuter railroad equipment? Well, I'd say that I'm a bit partial to the Metrolink bombadier-built (spelling?) commuter trains we have here. The consist is usually an f59 diesel-electric locomotive, 3-6 double deck commuter coaches, and the cab car. The Metrolink is comfortable, fast, very smooth, and the soundproofing is pretty good, as if you are sitting in the upper deck you can barely hear anything at all. I've taken the train out to Los Angeles many times and it makes for a pretty decent ride. Chris
