PTC of NSW 421 class diesel electric – image 1

The Public Transport Commission of New South Wales 421 class diesel electric built by Clyde Engineering of Granville, New South Wales, Australia is now starting to take shape (at long last). Texturing work will start either late this week or early next week, as I'm more than happy at the progress I'm making on the model. The polygon count is up around 4700 polys at the moment, which is ROUGHLY half the total amount of polys. I plan next to build the loco some simple bogies (i.e. frame & air tanks), then tackle the other side of the locomotive, next I'll tackle the number one end cab, do some more work on the bogies then do the nose. The order in which I do things is subject to change... I'll let you enjoy the pics I took of the engine I took a few minutes ago, hope you like them. PTC of NSW 421 class diesel electric – image 2

RE: PTC of NSW 421 class diesel electric

If you want to keep the poly count as low as possible, I would get rid of the raised sections on the side and just use a texture.--Victorian Railfan Web Site:

Thanks for that. There is actually quite a story behind the raised sections being on there, it all started a few nights ago when I had nothing better to do than work on the loco, and I thought to myself, "wouldn't it be fun to have a MSTS workshop". So I came up with the idea of showcasing a locomotive I'm bulding (only one I'm building is the 421) with only the frame on it, and that's how the raised bits on the side came about. I'm not sure at this stage if I'll remove the raised side bits, they only add a couple of hundred polys (I think about 158) each side, so it does seem possible I will remove them. Anyway, thanks again for the advice, look forward to seeing your AN green and yellow GM. Projects

You sure about that? I get the feeling I'm up-staging you a little bit. But your models (even though they're just the plain shell at the moment) are looking great too.Projects

"Agree! Small raised sections on side will not give you better result on MSTS. Because sun shine from different angle, but MSTS don't calculate shadow within object. (may be only calculate shadow to ground). So some part of raised sections you will feel too bright."I've notcied that, because the first thing I built on the model was the roof, and when I got it into the sim for the first time, not only did the roof cast a shadow, the area where the sides of the loco would be were also "casting shadows"! I knew MSTS was by no means real, but shadows when there is nothing to cast a shadow? Just a note, the 421 project has been put into "slow" mode for a couple of days while my left thumb recovers - was walking down a flight of stairs and misplaced my hand (also tripped), a strained muscle and two bruised bones (right on the joints) was what I get out of it, thankfully it is healing quickly and thus the 421 project can get going at full speed soon.
