somewhere in there. Have any good reference pics? I'm having trouble finding some. Got more painting to do before I pick final numbers. It looks like some had different horns, or is that just the couple pictures I have found screwing with me? I've got a little modelling to do too to get a proper headlamp. Hooray for freightanim.

RE: Who needs d-brakes anyway?

Howdy, Here are two pics from the mid-80's. These units are ex-RI. When they were put into ICG service, they also had "Ocitrol" Warning light packages added above the cab. See the pic of the brand-new Sd40-2. If you can put a "psedo" one on the cab (even just painted), I will gladly light her for you..in fact, If you need me, I will light it regardless! Hope these help!!!Kelley D. Ellison

Oy, you just want to make this difficult, don't you? They kindly removed those to make them easier to model, and you want them on. Any idea what's up with the cut-out section on the short hood, conductor's side where the brake wheel is on newer ones? (see link for pic) Trying to be prototypical can be a real pain. I think I can add that in, assuming I can alpha out part of the current hood so the new addition shows through. http://www.trainweb.org/arkansastrains/railroad/misc/Mloco/EMDX6040/IMG_3833.htm

>Do I smell a MOP?

I have MOP skin of the TA SD40-2 I made a couple of months ago, it needs a little work, and once the .s file with the no dynamic brakes is availible, I'll fix it up, and apply the new .s file to it, and eventually release it.

RE: Who needs d-brakes anyway?

Nice work but the EULA from the v1.2 update is pretty clear about reverse-engineering the models..."2. Limitations on Reverse Engineering, Decompilation, and Disassembly. You may not reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software Product, except and only to the extent that such activity is expressly permitted by applicable law notwithstanding this limitation."Not much gray area there.

RE: Who needs d-brakes anyway?

Howdy, These are Phase 1 Sd40-2's. That is the older rachet-style parking brake. Can you tell BN installed the dynos on them for EMD leasing? If you look closely, those do not have the square access hatches just behind the taper. ALL of BN's SD40-2's do not have them, as well as all of the MILW units. (albiet SOME of the 6040-6049 class do, so they got some off some other units when retrofitted!!)Supposedly, this is for the extended-range capability resistors and is a spotting feature of units so equpped, but my friend who is an engineer on the WSOR runs these exact units on a daily basis, and all of them have the extended range controllers. Confused? Me too!!And pish-posh the EULA. If they didn't want it modified, they wouldn't have gave us so many options!! this isn't a conversion, it is a "alpha detail" as far as I am concerned! NICE work!! Ancious to see the results!LAter!Kelley D. Ellison

Reverse engineering is as I understand it when you take something from a Kuju model and put it on your own or something like that. Which asks the questions, what happens when you slightly change the Dash 9 cab view to suit your model slightly better?Projects

G'day mate, and Conundrum isn't that small town just beyond the Black Stump - LOL"As I site here chewing on my MSTS CD, I wonder why did God make MS?"The answer to that mate, is obvious: "So you could sit there chewing on your MSTS CD." It's a bit like the "chicken and the egg" conundrum. Hee, hee.Maybe Version 2 will come on flavoured CDs? RE: Conundrum

Technically, if you wanted to explain reverse engineering, it would boil down to if you somehow managed to first unzip the original .s file, dis assemble it, and then put it back together in a whole new way, using their time and techniques to build on.Car companies do this all the time. They'll buy a competitor's car, and tear it apart to see how they (the competitor) did something, and then incorporate that design change into their cars. This practice also used to be done on software, in order to provide pirated materials or a hacked version. (I should know, I used to hack software so I didn't have to register the shareware...oh the heady college days)I guess the point I'm getting at, is technically, he's within the limits of the eula. But I wouldn't want to fight it in court.

RE: Conundrum

Paragraph one of the v1.2 content EULA:"• Personal Use: Subject to the following, you may use, edit and modify the Software Product solely for use in Microsoft Train Simulator and limited to personal, non-commercial use on your home computer. You may share the Software Product with family or friends, provided they accept the terms of this EULA, but you may not sell or otherwise distribute the Software Product in exchange for monetary or other value or in any commercial manner."It clearly states limited to personal use only. How can you say he's within the limits of the EULA when he has posted his modified loco to the file library? I'm not a lawyer by any means but that sure dosen't seem like personal use only.JS

Actually no.....

The EULA does not clearly state "limited to personal use only." Infact, it says quite the opposite."Personal Use: Subject to the following, you may use, edit and modify the Software Product solely for use in Microsoft Train Simulator and limited to personal, non-commercial use on your home computer...."Okay.... so we see that we can use this on our home computer, for non-commercial uses. Great - that means we can't lease out time on our machine to someone who wants to play MSTS. No biggie there, right?"You may share the Software Product with family or friends, provided they accept the terms of this EULA, but you may not sell or otherwise distribute the Software Product in exchange for monetary or other value or in any commercial manner."Hmmmm - so we can share with family or friends... Okay Joe, define friend, please. Acquaintances? Known social counterparts? Just how does one define "friend"?Microsoft simulation software has all been designed with the intent of being modified and added upon. That's how they choose to do things. I'm sure if they *really* were concerned about it, they'd have an official forum that was activiely populated by developers... but oh wait, that doesn't exist, now does it.So, where does that leave us, the end users? Well, according to the ELUA, we're free to modify and distribute the "Software Product" with family or friends, assuming we're not making a profit from it... now, I don't know about you, but I consider many around here "friends" (of a sort), and would gladly accept any improvements they can make. If you choose not to accept those improvements or modifications, then that's your business. Thanks for playing.

RE: Conundrum

Hey all, I usually keep my mouth shut on things like this.....but this time I though I would give my two cents.
If you have a problem with this....DON'T DOWNLOAD IT!!!!! PERIOD!!!If TA/MS/ or anyone else involved with it has a problem with it, let THEM do the EULA waving! So far I see NO ONE from TA, or MS complaining about it.Personally, I applaud his efforts! If I ever make a model, and someone customizes it to his personal rail line, I would be FLATTERED! No, AMAZED! As long as the ORIGINAL credit is given me, Why does it matter?I know of SEVERAL models I would LOVE to make some changes in. Minor ones, to suit better repainting and such, but I don't know how! Some makers flat out WILL NOT modify their models for us to even get lettering to not come out mirrored from one side to the other. Is THAT right? Now I am sure this post will get some of you fired up, and I will get flamed...I might even get peeps to complain to TA or even Macster, but come on guys..it is making the hobby better for all of us! His removing dynamic brakes on a model is NOT that big of a deal! (And besides, last time I checked, we NEED a non-dynamic SD40-2)Now that is just my two cents worth. Take it for what you will! OH, and again FWIW, I WILL download and use it if I get the chance! Thanks for the effort!Later!

Also FWIW, I included in the readme that this is also governed by the 1.2 content update EULA, so you must accept it to use this model. Not that anyone reads readmes. And I made this for the very reason that we have no free non-dynamic SD40-2 around, or at least I don't seem to have one.
