Feb-27-02, 11:33 PM (EST) "Reworked Illinois Central (Long Porch) Widevision Caboose nearly complete" As many of you may know, I released this caboose model last September:
I shudder every time I look at that I always thought it was pretty ugly, but it was my first model. Then I released the US hi-hip hopper, in my opinion a much better model. I always wanted to redo the caboose, and here it is! I still need to tweak the texture a little, and fix the alpha channel:
It is, of course, an Illinois Central Widevision Cupola caboose, with cupola view (passenger view). I am not sure if the long porch was a feature unique to IC cabooses or not. I had been planning a short porch version as well, but then I saw that MainLines had made a great deal of nice-looking progress (http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/2594.html) on that style.Questions/comments?troub

Feb-28-02, 02:04 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Reworked Illinois Central (Long Porch) Widevision Caboose nearly complete" Thanks David. The box and cylinder thing was on the previous model, but there is some added underframe. Vastly improved trucks (although not fully 3D modelled, I think they look ok), wheels, ladders, and better texturing are the main enhancements. Also, there now are the little light-box things hanging from the corners of the roof, so if it's appropriate for the time period of the repaint, you can paint some lights on there, and (I think) edit the .wag file to make it light up appropriately. I know some of those things seemed to be lit up like Christmas trees. More accurate sizing, and a bunch of little details, in a nutshell.troub

"RE: Reworked Illinois Central (Long Porch) Widevision Caboose nearly complete" Hi Troub, As a fan of your work, I love both, but there is a Nice change in the new version!! But......Will you be changing the trucks to rollerbearing?? I THINK all of them had either standard or Caboose leaf-spring rollerbearing trucks. Just a thought....I don't want to offend ya as I did when I mentioned a certain Stack car maker used Friction bearings on his stack cars!! BTW, nice work!! Kelley

Could you possibly explain some of the differences, and what is meant exactly by roller-bearing, friction bearing, and leaf-spring? Then we'll see how much of it I really do understand I modelled the body from the diagrams I found, and for the trucks I based them mostly on photos.Oh, and I never take offense at well-intentioned suggestions, especially from people who know more about some of this stuff than I do!I do know that the trucks were wrong on the original caboose(s) that I released, but that was simply becuase I didn't have a good photo of some real caboose trucks. I have changed the truck texture based on a caboose photo (you can see it in the above screenshot), and I think I've added the leaf-springs in the model (it sticks out a little through the middle of the side of the truck), but if you could explain it a little more, it might let me know if I'm really on the right track.troub

Mar-01-02, 10:29 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Reworked Illinois Central (Long Porch) Widevision Caboose nearly complete" For the era on which the above skin is based, did they still have lights all over it? In most of the photos I've seen, the lights appear to have removed from the lightboxes on the corners. For some of the older orange-IC era cabooses, there seem to be plenty of lights in there though, if I remember correctly (a green and a red on each corner?).troub

Mar-19-02, 00:21 AM (EST) 10. "Reworked Illinois Central (Long Porch) Widevision Caboose complete!" It's done! The trucks still aren't exactly right, but they're a little better. It's uploaded to my site right now, and should be available at train-sim.com shortly (whenever I get around to uploading it ).
