Dec-29-01, 11:57 PM (EST) "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" Apparently there weren't too many folks that found it on the Edmfamily website because I haven't seen any threads about it.Just loaded it tonight and ran the pon5uphill. I love it! Signals and AI trains!The only problem I had was at the lower Northland elevator where I crossed the new AI shortcut switch twice moving some cars around and was forced to turn right, since it doesn't appear to be manual.The frequent AI traffic is great.When are you going "production" with it?krswen Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Up until I saw this post I didn't even know about it.Still, I'm looking forward to seeing it and running on it. Is it still available for Beta testing?Henry Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-02-02, 11:52 PM (EST) 6. "RE: hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" Yes. No. Maybe. It depends. Not necessarily in that order. I think I finally got the signals figured out, anyone wants to still try a beta, it's cluttered and unfinished, but it has two activities with AI traffic. Tricky to drive, the AI trains take priority and won't stop for you unless you're already on the single track sections, if you are meeting an opposing train and the manual switch is already set for him, you have to back up, if the path for an overtaking train throws the switch in front of you on a converging point, you have a few second window to get onto the single track to delay the dispatcher throwing the next switch. It's still possible to get trapped in a game ending "catch-22" situation where you can't go forward or back up, but if you're paying close attention to the signals it's unlikely. Except in the case Krswen is talking about, an extremely short single track section. I would have made that a crossover, but there's no way to signal a crossover in the sim. One thing I did do was to change the interval signals on the AI bypass around the grain elevator to unlinked single head interlockings, since those default to red without an active path thru them, the player's signal will change from green to flashing yellow when the switch changes. I may change that section, I'll have to change some others anyway before I can get on with expansion.
And no, you can't install it over version 4, because the naming convention in the .trk file makes it appear as a totally different route to the sim. Version 3.1, 4, and 5 are different from each other, this makes it possible to have all three installed at the same time if you're that nutty about the PO&N. I'm not going to change this for the final version of 5 tho, so anyone who has the beta will have to delete it to install the actual PO&N5. About two more months, I think.
Rich had to take the beta off his website, some problem with the nodes or something, anybody still wants a copy will have to get it by email. It's a 1.7 meg attachment, so all you Yahoos are out of luck. It's also unfinished, cluttered, and pretty crummy looking IMAO, and there is no automatic idiot's install or maps. If you still want a copy, post here and I'll email it to you.
Some screenshots of the current working copy (not the rough beta you'd be getting) in this thread;

Jan-03-02, 00:56 AM (EST) 7. "RE: hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" I can always repost the PO&N beta, but I'll need you to send it to me again. I have it saved somewhere on my drive but I can't find it. I took it off the site cause Bill said he got it and that was pretty much the reason for me posting it. What I'm doing now is creating different pages for my site so the EMRR will have it own page, and the bodiddly will have its own page, and so forth. I can always add a page for the PO&N. I'm needing a new name for the site anyway. Something more generic. I figure some of us can create a co-op of sorts for at least talking about what we're doing. I'll probably put up my new page tomorrow. Soon as Nels updates the main site here, the Retro Metro #2 package will be available and that will take off the last bandwidth killer on my site, so hosting the PO&N is no problem. I do have another Metro package coming out shortly which will have to go beta for a few days but other than that as long as I can change things on my site for the business, no problem hosting a few files or pages.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-04-02, 12:16 PM (EST) 8. "RE: hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" Hmmm, no response to that, hey Rich? Guess you don't need to host it if nobody's interested.
KRSWEN, I did some major reworking to fix that grain elevator bypass, thanks for the feedback. I lengthened the single track, and also lengthened the other end of the double track, which obviously shortens the stretch of single track going thru the tunnel to Texas, but that one was long enough to stand it. I'm also making all the junctions with the AI trains overhead gantry signals to avoid confusion. I'll zip up what I have now and send it to you if you want to try it out, altho I'll have to change the consists back to default so you don't have to figure out what I got. Here's a head - on meet;Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 1
This is green for go, the track monitor is hard to figure because it merely shows the location of the next switch ahead that's thrown for the curve, but in this case all the switches in the grainery are set to straight, so the orange arrow is indicating that the auto switch at the far end of the grainery is set for the AI train. OK to proceed from here to the grain elevator tracks.Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 2
Now it's not OK to proceed, the nearest switch (switch window) is still set for me, the one at the far end of the single track is set for the AI path. There is about a 20 second window here, depending on the speed of the AI train, if you make it to the base of the near switch within 20 seconds of the throw of the far one, your train will block and delay the throwing of the near switch, enabling you to back up to clear the main if you over run the signal.Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 3
Time's up, the near switch is now set for the curve, going on to the single track at this point would be head on collision or catch-22 stalemate.Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 4
Hail to the Chief, about a minute later the AI train comes thru.Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 5
Back of AI train clears switch, auto switch resets to default state of straight ahead, signal clear for the player.Message Areas - "hey Sniper297 ..... nice job on the PO&N5 beta!" – image 6
After both trains pass, the interrupted football game resumes, 4th and 2 on the workmen's 15, female hikers lined up for a field goal. The deer are chanting "Block that kick!", but the cows think it's a bunch of bull, and the workmen ain't fooled either, so they have 3 safeties back watching for the fake.
