Jan-02-02, 12:57 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Port Odgen and Northern 5!" It was on the EMRR site for a while but does not appear to be there any longer. I have it and it is very much in beta stage at the present time.Bill

Jan-02-02, 01:37 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Port Odgen and Northern 5!" Jim was looking for a place Bill (aka longhairwizard) could obtain the file since Bill's email couldn't take a large file. After Bill got it I removed the file. I wound up having to remove all the files because the amount of downloads was exceeding my limit by only 5 other sites worth! It got so bad I couldn't get into my own site to do anything. I like the files being hosted here but it's been days since I've uploaded my Retro Metro #2 add-on and I haven't seen or heard it's been posted yet. It gets to be a dilemma what to do with these large files.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-02-02, 11:20 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Port Odgen and Northern 5!" Actually, that was an unfinished beta for signal testing, I think I finally have most of the screwiness of the signal "logic" figured out, so I can finally get back to expansion. I haven't made any progress at all to speak of, other than adding the potential for AI traffic to it.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 1
Picking up helpers at the new south pass helper shed, BNSF AI train on the bypass routeMessage Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 2
Waiting for the AI train to clear the signal at the end of the single track section at the top of the 4% grade.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 3
I haven't been entirely neglecting scenery, the South Pass now looks more like a pass.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 4
At the summit, just before the track goes to single again across the bridge. The way these signals are set up, "HAL9000" (AI dispatcher) only throws the switch so many signals ahead of the AI train, so if you get caught by the switch suddenly throwing in front of you, you have about 20 seconds (depending on the speed of the overtaking train) to get on to the single track section, which will delay throwing the next switch. Note the switch window is showing the switch behind is still set for the curve, adding another set of signals to the second track would probably change this. Gonna try that.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 5
Made it in time, the switch ahead is still set for the straight. No going back now, I'm on a switch set for the curve, backing up would split the train and break the coupler. Unfortunately, the double head linked interlocking is oblivious to the fact that your train is now fouling the switch, and still indicates green for the other track.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 6
Gotta hustle to clear the switch, here he comes. Note the switch window showing the switch behind set for the straight, so the back of his train is clear and completely on the passing track. I shoulda waited, which one of us is the dummy?Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 7
I was going to show him following me onto the bridge, but he stopped at the switch instead. Usually the AI train follows you in this situation, doing his best to catch up and ram your caboose, so you have to clear the next diverge as expeditiously as possible before he catches up. This time he stopped, in spite of the switch still being set for him to come onto the single track main (switch window). Possibly the interlocking went red for him after the back of my train cleared the base of the switch, I'll have to investigate that.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 8
After the back of my train is clear, the switch behind sets for the curve, he gets a green and starts up again.
This is all a little tricky to set up, and the player doesn't really have any path at all so you have to set your own switches (except the automatic ones at the junctions with the AI tracks), and the AI train takes priority over the player at every meet. To me it should be more interesting tho, every time you play the same activity the meets are going to be in different places, it's possible to screw up and delay the AI trains without ending the activity, and it will play out a different way because the traffic would now be backed up, requiring different actions on the player's part to adjust to the changes. Feels more like real railroading to me.Message Areas - "Port Odgen and Northern 5!" – image 9
As I said, I haven't been completely neglecting scenery, I work on it when the signals start getting to me.
This is a lot more ambitious and complicated than anything I've tried to do before, so it's probably going to be a couple more months before PO&N5 is ready. Meantime, try PO&N4.Jim Ward
