Why developers started to use the spanned zip system is beyond me, but in any event, I am trying to install this route. In the read me, it says to unzip the file containing Columbia River Gorge.zip into a TEMP location, but when I try and direct the file to such location (or any location for that metter), it does nothing. I click "OK" at the bottom after choosing the path, and it reverts back to the same box, asking me where I want to unzip the file. Can anybody help?Chris Bogley

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

I had a hell of a time with the ATSF monon route, inspite of the fact that I had newroads and X-tracks installed, and followed all the instructions. The installation went without a problem, and I ran the exe.file in the MONON route folder, but I still had problems with missing textures, scenery not loading, and strange objects appearing where they shouldn't. Also, something about the tracks and switches didn't look right to me. I had spurs and sidings that disappeared into nothing, and once came across a huge tree planted right in the middle of the rails! I tried using the lastest versions of winrar and RouteRiter, all to no avail. I still have the route installed, but I'm tired of pissing around with it. It looks like such a nice route though.

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

Hi Chris !After you have downloaded all the CRG Zips into a folder you then unzip one after the other into the same folder, telling WINZIP which folder that is.I created one called ##-WIP "Work in Progress" and made that one the WINZIP's default unzip into folder. The ## are there to keep it at the top of the folders list in "My Computer" or Windows Explorer. When you double-click on a ZIP file up pops the WINZIP WIZARD if so set and after confirming that you want to UNZIP proceeds asking you where to:Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install – image 2 If you want to Unzip to a different folder then browse "Select different folder" another one but make sure that all CRG Zips are unzipped into the same folder !Having unzipped them all you should then see files in that folder with the extension of .Z01, .Z02, .ZO3 and so on, but one will have the extension of .zip ! If not then COPY/PASTE the files so that they are all in the same folder. If you then double-click on that ZIP file it will then use all the "Spanned" .Z01, etc files to create the Route in the chosen location. That's all there is to it.I agree that it would be easier to prepare routes using multiple Zips like I did with the MARIAS-KOOTENAI, which after unzipping shows you what there is ! Alternatively individual Zips can be prepared/converted into self-extracting Zipped.EXE files, installing their contents into the chosen Drive / Folder.Hope you can get the route installed now !Take Care, O t t o.

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

Thanks Otto, but I think that is just a bit too much for my 31 year old mind to comprehend. I had asked for and thought someone was sending me thier actual folder of the route, but he sent me the zip files instead. I was hoping to still somehow get the route running anyway, maybe tommorow, I can pull this thread up and give it a try.Chris Bogley

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

I did exactly as you did, only after I click on "unzip now", I get the box asking me to "specify location for Part 1" or something like that. I click on the location, click "OK", and end up back at the same spot. Guess I will chalk this one up as another route I won't be able to run. Thanks anyway Otto for your help, I'm done wasting my time on this one. Developers need to stop and think about how they are uploading these routes. This spanned system sucks. It shouldn't have to be this hard to enjoy somebody elses creation, but I didn't make the route, so I will step off my box.Chris Bogley

LAST EDITED ON Nov-17-04 AT 03:11 PM (EST)

Hi Chris, I'm going to walk you through this install.1.Go to My Documents & create a new folder called Columbia.
2.Download the Columbia River Gorge files 01 through 08 & unzip them into the folder you created in My Documents by using Open,Select Another Folder,My Documents, Columbia, Unzip. Do this with all 8 files. The Columbia folder should have the 8 files,a read me text & read me doc. file IDZ Gif.
3. Use WinRAR to de-compress the files. If you have this utility, Right click on the Zip file Columbia Gorge.Zip(15,542), from the menu choose Open With, Then choose WinRAR from the sub menu.
4. Choose the Wizard & left click, then choose browse, then single left click on My Documents,Scroll down to the Columbia folder & single left click. left click OK.
5. Then left click finished. The de-compressing process will begin.
6. When finished cut & paste the route to your MSTS Route folder. It works each & every time.
Please try this Chris & let me know. It's a very nice route.BTW: If you don't have WinRAR you can get it here.http://www.rarlab.com/

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

The reason we use spanned zips for Internet is because that is the system Route Riter uses to break down the route into similar size chunks for upload. (I put all the route files in executables for my CD distribution versions). Using Route Riter saves having to manually split the files down into manageable chunks, mindful that many users are still on dial-up and can't grab a 100 - 150Mb file in one go. I did ask Mike Simpson (the Route Riter author) about the possibility of the programme creating executable "Click" style files but the answer was no. If you follow the instructions clearly, use the latest Winzip and *not* the built in Windows XP de-archiver then spanned zips work perfectly well. However I do have to say the majority of my route tech support questions in recent months, have related to installation of those uploaded to UKTS in this manner and I would be grateful for any suggestions as to how things could be improved.

RE: Can't Get Columbia River Gorge Route to install

Hi Vern !I took the time to split up the MARIAS-KOOTENAI folders into reasonable sized chunks, in the case of the TILES folder having to split it's contents into 2 parts.Managed to get the whole route portioned into five 35 Mb average Zips for easy download for all, Analogue or DSL ISP connections. The Zips could also have been converted by WINZIP into self-extracting EXE files, I might do the next time, realising that some still had problems installing the route from Zips only.O t t o
