Aug-12-01, 11:14 AM (EST) "Wow! New view angles!!!"
I read something on a forum recently about using the Ctrl, Shift and 9 keys to change view in "fly-by" mode (ie, key 4 view). It didnt work for me, but what I did find was amazing. Try this and see:(Apologies to those who know this trick already. Its probably in the manual somewhere, maybe I overlooked it).Novel views in MSTS
Useful for novel screenshot angles as well)First of all, select a view key (2 , 3 or 8).
Zoom in a bit and position yourself behind a moving train.
Now press Ctrl Shift and 9, all at the same time.
Now move your left (or right) arrow key as far as it will go. You are now travelling parallel to the train, but way out on your own and far from the track. Experiment with different arrow keys for different effects. Use the combination of arrow keys plus Ctrl or Shift keys, as per normal, to rotate camera views high and low, etc.To return to 'normal' viewing mode, just press Ctrl, Shift and 9 again.TipsHow you line up your initial view shot (ie, front, side, top-down, etc) using keys 2, 3, or 8, determines how you will follow the train after you press Ctrl Alt and 9. If you get disoriented at any time, and cant get the view you want. Simply press Ctrl, Shift and 9 to get back to normal mode. Or else press keys 2, 3 or 8 to come back to normal views. To start with, its best to select a countryside route with plenty of space and few buildings, i.e. Settle to Carlisle, etc.Have fun Tin

Hi Jim,Re key 8. Say for example I've selected 'key2' view. If I then press key8, it kicks in the default view. ie. a back view of the train, taken way up in the air. It's handy sometimes.regards,Tin Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-12-01, 01:10 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Wow! New view angles!!!" Hey -- CTRL-SHFT-9 -- interesting I will have to give it a try...that other trick I found (I posted it, but it was w/ something else) go to "4" view, (sitting by the tracks), this usually "locks on" to the lead engine, (onetime I got impatient and started pressing keys) then when in "4" view press CTRL-arrow (of the direction down the train you want to go), this will lock the camera on to the next car down the line -- good for watching a 100 car train go by (if you don't mind the jerky camera hops) --- but then the camera stays locked on to the last car you had it on, so you have to move the camera BACK all the way to the front when you are doneMatt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

>that other trick I found (I

--Glad you did find it and post it, Matt. Its opened up a whole new viewing experience in MSTS for me.I had another go at the "4" view earlier, and what I found was: By default, the "4" view follows the train as it passes - as if you were turning your head fast to watch it go by.
But if you press Ctrl Alt 9, then the train passes by without the camera following it, as if you were staring ahead.I'm not sure if this is the same effect you are refering to, but at least we are speaking about the same key! Thanks again,Tin. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-12-01, 05:08 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Wow! New view angles!!!" LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-01 AT 05:10 PM (EST)What I was talking about was that you can shift the camera from one car to the other while in "4" view, (CTRL-arrow key), similar to the way you can do it w/ the "2" and "3" views. BUT THAT IS A GREAT DISCOVERY!!! w/ the (CTRL-SHIFT-9) you hit it onece it unlocks the camera, hit it agin to re-lock the camera. In the "2" & "3" views this makes the camera "orbit" around the car of interest (you can (CTRL-Arrow) to lock onto a different car while doing this, but the camera stays looking in the same direction. But in the "4" view it unlocks the camera, and leaves it in the last position it was looking..great for watching a passing train thanks for the post -- when you said "Its probably in the manual somewhere, maybe I overlooked it" -- no you didn't overlook it, because there wasn't a "manual", just a lengthened read-me file w/ picturesHow many other hidden tidbits are there in this thing-- someone else posted something about putting a road-truck on the rails..Hmmmmmlater -- time to post a new engine
Matt

Aug-13-01, 10:52 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Wow! New view angles!!!" The right-mousing did not work for me in views 2 or 3, but was quite effective in the "HeadOut" view from the engine. You get this with the up- or down-arrow while in cab view (#1). In this mode, right and left arrows swivel the view in a horizontal plane, while right-mousing swivels in any direction. Watch the ballast go by, if you like. The Dash9 and GP-38 need to have the HeadOut line added to the .eng file, for this to work.GK Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-13-01, 11:59 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Wow! New view angles!!!" the screen shots get dumped into the Train Simulator folder w/ names of scrgrb0, scrgrb1, and so on. EXCEPT that when you take a set o' pics on one outing, then take another set, the first ones are over written, so be sure to rename/move after every run
hope that helps

The pics just get dumped into the Trainsim folder. A seperate pics folder is a good idea, though. Thanks for that tip about pics being overwritten. So thats why some of em dissapear!T Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
