I was wondering if there is any way of getting this to work? My plan is to edit the ENG files of some steam engines which I know to have at least a basic cab interior in such a way as to give them a passenger view where I could pan around the view as required. However, I have yet to manage getting the actual engine sounds to be audible in this passenger view. The engines I'm talking about all have their sounds aliased to the "generic two-cylinder" and "generic three-cylinder" sound packages which are avilable for download from uktrainsim and various other sources.
If you should be familiar with these packages, you might remember that each set of SMS files includes a pair of files titled like "2c-100a-engpas01.sms" and "2c-100a-cabpas01.sms". I thought that I could use these files in order to add engine sounds to the virtual cab view, but even when I include a reference to either of those files in the virtual cabview section in the ENG file, all I hear are the generic "rolling" sounds common to the default passenger views.I know that there's an alternative in the shape of editing the "head out" view in such a way as to move it to the inside of the cab, but as you will remember, the head-out view won't work in tunnels.
Is there anything else I could do in order to come to a successful conclusion?

RE: Engine sounds in passenger view?

I found out reading Stuart Williamsoms post to another forum, how to do it only the other day.Copy you XXXcab.sms file and rename it xxxcabpas.smsChange the pointer in the Inside view sound line to the new file.In the the xxxcabpas.sms change the passengercam () statement from Deactivation to Activation line.Stuart also says make sure you move the Passengercam () statement for the coreect scalablitygroup.

RE: Engine sounds in passenger view?

Hi,When you use a cabXXX.sms as a passenger.sms, there is change it will not work properly.
In the cab.sms are variables avaible, that, IMHO, are not avaible in a passenger.sms. For instance Variable2.
So when you have sounds in the cab.sms that are dependent of a variable, they will not work in passenger.sms.
You can get them to work, but only dependent on speed.Dick van den HovenEngine sounds in passenger view? – image 1

Oh, alright, I found the thread over in the Sound forum - seems as if I pursued a dead trace all along. What I did was editing the actual "outside" SMS files by moving the "PassengerCam" statement into the "Activation" group and eliminating the SMS reference line from the passenger view section in the ENG file.Odd, though - I have a feeling that this was actually what I had achieved halfway through my experiments, but then I pursued the thing with the "xxx_cabpas.sms" files and eliminated my earlier, workable solution without even noticing it. Tsk...

RE: Engine sounds in passenger view?

Here's the thread, for anyone else that's interested;http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/261.html
I dunno if I can simplify this any further, we did a hell of a lot of thrashing around before we figured it out.Every .eng file has two seperate sections, the "wagon" section and the "engine" section. At the bottom of the wagon section is (whatever engine name)eng.sms for the external sounds, and at the bottom of the engine section is (whatever engine name)cab.sms for the internal sounds. For the most part pasting the passenger view lines just above the line for the sound works without screwing up anything else, if you paste it just above the eng.sms you're in the wagon section and the sound will come from the \Sound\(whatever engine name)eng.sms, if you paste them above the cab.sms line in the .eng file it will play sounds from \Sound\(whatever engine name)cab.sms. Problem is that it's not gonna work as is, you have to edit that .sms file (whichever one it uses for whichever section you put it in) to move the PassengerCam entry from the Deactivation ( section to the Activation ( section, otherwise switching to the passenger view will deactivate that .sms file, which means no sound. For the most part I do switching and way freights, so I don't go very fast, therefore I haven't experimented with this stuff at high speed. But if you look in the .sms files you'll see there are several sections with the activation and deactivation lines, my guess is that these are for different speeds. I just changed the first one I came across and that worked for me, possibly if I drove a geep 38 at 110mph, the passenger view sounds might cut out because I didn't change the other sections. If the sounds work in the passenger views at low speeds and not at high speeds, try doing the edit, find, for the word "activation", and see how many sections there are in the .sms file you're hacking, and change all of them.
