Talk about horrible business sense! Everyone knows that by far the largest percent of gamers is interested in crashing trains together in bloody fashion. Why do you think Half-Life and Unreal Tournament sell so well? I probably sound sadistic but it's just a video game after all. The derailments in TS1, especially the view mode, were utterly awful. I want to see big improvements.

RE: I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2

Hear hear! I'm not for turning MSTS into one of those idiot modern day gory blood-riddled shooters, but 'real as it gets' should be inclusive of realistic derailments.Unfortunately, we seem to be going backwards, as M$ have stated that some operating companies have requested that their trains be impossible to derail (NS maybe?). So we therefore face some options for M$:a) Have NO derailments whatsoever
b) Respect the rights of the companies and restrict those from derailment
c) Decide not to include those operating companies in MSTS 2
d) Ignore the rights of the companies and go headforth regardless, pay the compensation in the court case, and further their plans to monopolize American railwaysAs much as I would like option D (hey I'm Aussie I don't care if Bill runs Amtrak), I believe the decision has already been made and its more likely A or B. Koziol
I'm kind of thinking that NS is behind that as well, that just seems to be the type of totally anal response one gets from corprate america(just look at UP's "we control everything" license policy)
But unfortunaly this seems to be the wave of the future in sims as I've heard that certain aircraft builders have started placing restrictions that their craft cannot sufer damage(geez that's gotta make for a fun combat sim eh)or even in some cases not be allowed to crash.
Maybe if MS gives in to the restriction code it into the default rolling stock and not the game engineGary S

Hey, I never thought of that, which is probably the likely option, and seeing MSTS is dominated by 3rd party stuff anyway, we wouldn't feel it too much.Koziol.

I don't think we need "blood and gore" thats just ridiculous. Cars breaking up, damaging and possibly exploding would be nice though. Maybe chemical spills simulated too.

"Hey look, a tankcar, in the sky!"Seriously though, what do they plan to do? as son as the conditions are right for the derailment, right before it, pop up a test patter screne, and THEN have the "Activity ended, Car derailed" thing??-------------I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2 – image 4

In actuality, this is John, not Bob Netzlof. Thanks, sorry for the confusion.

How about the infamous blue screen saying "Your train has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down immediately." I can just see it now.

RE: I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2

Hmm, can0t resist throwing in my 2c worth: My guess we'll just get an instant pop-up message: Your train has derailed, click ok, and the activity / exploring run terminates. Period. You don't think so? Think again: We already have it arranged this way in MSTS 1 with the "coupler break" message & immediate termination of the game...And the way it were to be implemented? No more derail cam (note, there is no broken coupler cam now, either), plus setting the parameters in the .exe from the current 10 or so seconds of a grace period between the actual derailment and the pop-up window from 10 to 0. Job accomplished, no RR faces screenshots of its equipment parked sideways, down in the gorge.Lukas a.k.a SwissiePS: Well, we can always keep MSTS 1 if we want to derail.

heh.. It'd be cool seeing the knuckle fall apart to the ground, if we did have a broken coupler cam

RE: I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2

I'm sure one of the many members of this baord could create a fix if the options stated above are the case. Or we could call in a guru from another board...lolI just want to run through the coaches with a chainsaw and shotgun and murder all the people...then, break into the engine and slash the engineer and derail the train in to a metropolis and create bloddy havoc! Mwahaha....o...just some thought of Vice City escaping...Sorry for that. But seriously...do we want to derail, have an extreme close up of the engine, and to look into the shattered windows and see two dead, bloddy bodies, strewn across the dash?...I think not.

Actually, it does have a sound when a knuckle breaks. I was moving the cam with the train watching as it went over a switch that had "broken coupler syndrome". Heard a rending metal sound and the cars seperated.Todd

I'm not sure they would do this, but they could always restrict derailments and leave a hidden file tweak that would bypass the restrictions. You know we would find it, but it would probably keep the majority of simmers from the derailments. Sometimes that sort of thing allows a company to comply with licensing rules AND get around them at the same time ("Well, they weren't supposed to find that developer's debugging switch").

That would be horrible!!
The best plact to see derailments is on Al Krug's derailment stories on his stories page.

I'd like the derailments to be more realistic. It's part of the real thing and should be in the sim. If there were more realistic derailments, here's what there should be.Locomotives can catch on fire
Cars can bend, break and mangle
Liquids can spill
Trucks and wheels can break off
Cars can telescope into others
Glass can break
And people are never shown

RE: I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2

Well, I think that we can all agree that what we want is just a little bit more realism...nothing graphic or violent, but just more damage being shown, and to have that damage actually affecting the performance of the locomotive. In flight combat siumalators, for example, if you take a hit to your rudder or ailerons, you can actually see it affecting your controls, and your plane doesn't steer right anymore. In MSTS, I personally would like to have seen this in some of the activities that came with the game, such as when you have to pick up a disabled locomotive, or you have a train with an overheated journal box. So how about seeing some smoke now and then from the overheated bearings? How about seeing that affecting your locomotive with your voltage and amperage gauges? I'd like to see a bit more realism...just with damage to the trains themselves. As far as derailments are concerned, yeah I agree that it is a simulator afterall and so when something goes wrong, we should be able to see it. We don't really need to see too much when there is a derailement that we know in real life the crew wouldn't likely walk away from, but it is just a video game after all. You can have some good sound effects, fire, and some explosions and still without showing any crew and without taking it too far.Chris

Hope non-US versions will allow real life !I'm schocked of the arrogance of those Non-Derail Companies,
is THAT legally defendable in USA or anywhere ?Option: use dummy companies, what's the difference ?Love and Peace

RE: I hear there will be no gory derailments in TS2

It does seem pretty ridiculous that these companies can demand that their equipment won't derail in the sim. Just imagine if they demanded the same from model manufacturers! You can't use our name on your HO scale Dash 9's unless you can guarantee that they won't fall off the benchwork and smash into a million pieces on the floor... Or for that matter, maybe they should stop painting their name and logo on their own engines, until they can find a way to prevent them from derailing too!

In my previous post I only speculated that NS was behind the no derail clause(though that is so totally corporate america)it may very well be one of the other countries railroads.
As to the generic companies I'd agree that would be one way around a rail corp calling the tune as to how real real is but I think that may also mean generic routes as part of the deal with the railroads involved is pretty much all access to the area being modeled(not that cooperation with BNSF made KUJU's Marias Pass all that accurate)Gary S
