As many of you know the NS in partnership with Amtrak and their initial customer UPS have been running experiments on re-introducing Premium Freight Service on the NEC. They Will call it premium intermodal service and it will be designed to compete timewise with 2 man driver teams running up I95 from Atlanta and south and save the shippers $$$$ because of lower bulk rates on RR Intermodal Service vice individual over the road trucks.... The resultant trains are NS25/26 which originate in the Atlanta area and "race" north to the northern NJ intermodal Yards (LANE Tower in Newark is where they exit the NEC) in under 24 hours. These trains also make stops/setouts at Charlotte, Greensboro and Alexandria. These Trains enter the NEC at Alexandria (A-F interlocking) and currently pass through the lower level tracks at Union Station because it seems CSX has been unable to supply Pilots to run through Benning Yard and the DC freight bypass up onto the NEC along with the routine severe congestion on CSX' tracks in the DC area.). Early test trains were 3 GP40s/60s (Horseheads) and about 15 to 30 cars... On the NEC their speed (MAS) was limited to 50mph (80kph) due to NEC required ATS and software upgrades (LSL - Locomotive Speed Limiter equipment is required by Amtrak for all freight engines operating on the NEC. The software for the GP40-2's limits the speed to 50 mph or less, and from what I understand an upgrade of the software would cost about $40k per unit.) The quick fix was for Amtrak to add a pair of P40s (800 series) from the former Express Freight Business (which obviously have the required SW and direct release capable brakes)in place of the 2 leading geeps.... The Goal was to raise the MAS over the NEC to 70mph (112kph) but the Amtrak mechanical folks vetoed that given the current state of repair of the track structure on the NEC WAS-NYP...
So the current MAS is 60mph (96kph) which ain't so bad for freight.... However to show how much the NEC has deteriorated due to maintenance (or lack there of ) issues you should remember that the PRR ran intermodals at the 70mph speed behind GG1s 50 years ago....
Progress eh???????For your viewing pleasure are a couple of in-game shots of the NS25/26 train(s) NS25/26 Freight on the NEC – image 1

Dope Smoking Loser!)... And maybe the Feds would have diverted the cost of a 2 lane Interchange on Interstate 666 in East Jabrook into the routine maintenance of the NEC! Hey Jake,The "word" is that this will not be a UPS only service as several other "customers" have expressed keen interest...
Also there will be at least 1 P40 leading until all the Geeps get their software upgraded.... And that will be a function of how much business this generates.... So for now you should lose at least the leading Horsehead! Also the last several runs were not pure UPS and had several other "clients'" trailers on there.....BTW; Here's a link to some pix of the real thing!

Yea I know Chuck,26A originates in Atlanta as train 204. It does make a stop in Greensboro, NC to drop off some traiers and Auto Racks. The First couple runs on the NEC had a set of 4 Horsehead GP40-2's. Apparently they were pushing them too hard, because one of them had a mechanical failure, leaving only 3 operating. All but the last few test runs had the train running with a set of 3 GP40-2's. The last couple runs were the only ones to use Amtrak Power, which did not operate south of Alexandria. After 25A hits Alexaandria, it becomes 203.Also, you'll notice that the trailers on my train are both UPS and Xtra. I plan to also have Tip Intermodal Services and BNSF.

Looking good..
And apparently it's for real too, judging from the post further down...Although I somehow doubt Amtrak'd allow double-stack containers on the NEC in real-life?

Just curious Jake, Whose Gennies are those?
They look a little flat faced to me.
Also I think the trucks are the wrong color and it looks like the wheels have no flanges..

But they have transparent windows. I like them with or without flanges. I'm waiting impatiently for NALW next pack.

Yeah, those are indeed Robert Fontaine's Geneses. Do they have any plans to eventually bring the Imodal cars up to higher speed specs, or would Amtrak even allow it if they did? Also, how much does NS pay AMTK for using their power? Tim Frost

Bad news everyone. NS already quit running the trains. It was only a test deal, politically oriented I believe. They gave the crews 45 days to get qualified, then only ran the 25/26A for 30 days after the crews were qualified. Everyone that was on those jobs is now elsewhere. Just noticed it in the computer system last night.

RE: NS25/26 Freight on the NEC

John,
FWIW, As you know I ride in with some Sr. Amtrak management once or twice a week on the VRE. My understanding is that Amtrak would like to continue the service and it is up to NS marketing to sell enough to pay for it....
Is that what you guys heard?
BTW, I heard that the NS crews who qualified on the NEC were based out of Allentown?????? How long was the line to sign up?????Chuck Schneider

Well I was in that line to signup..hehehAnyway, when it was posted, crews would have 45 days to qualify and then the trains would run for at least 30 days, maybe more. The crews are based in the North Jersey area. As of a couple days ago, the crews that were qualified were no longer on the jobs, they were all on other various trains from North Jersey to HBG.And yes, Amtrak would like to see the freight continue cause then they could show another use for the NEC and maybe get some more federal money out of it. As of now, the 25A/26A are no more. No idea of any plans on the part of NS to resume them.
