I was wondering that before too... I'd gues that they turn em off right when they go over that plastic Hi-Rail level crossing part.

RE: Railgrinder visits Sandpatch

Well you would need to grind the rail so I'm guessing that they go over a crossing at 5 mph??? Also what is the speed the grinder goes while operating?

RE: Railgrinder visits Sandpatch

I watched the one in my post in the General Forum go over a road..Nothing different. Kept on grinding, same speed. It sparyed a soapy substance or maybe it was fire-fighting foam on the tracks afterward. Im not sure if they did this the whole time, or just over the road. The Hy-Rails on the other hand must stop, the traffic has right of way. The Hy-Rails aren't heavy enough to set off the signals.

What about those ramps that ramp the road over the track? I'm pretty sure those are plastic, would they not get burned up?

Most of the crossings here in Ohio use wood ties with the exception of a few high auto traffic crossings. Those use dense rubber. I've never seen a plastic crossing before.Joe

A lot of the newer/redone ones out here use concrete slabs that are sized to fit the crossing. They have much better traction for autos in wet weather than the rubber. They're also much more expensive of course. Tim Frost

Here in Atlanta, LORAM is currently grinding the CSX mainline towards Chattanooga. They ONLY work at night and sound a wicked alarm that will wake the dead if a train is coming through. (Of course so they can safely get out of the way.)I think a grade crossing is the least of their problems... and FYI... they seem to have neither done grinding nor replaced the wood ties with cement ties at the closest siding where they are currently storing the grinding train. My Guess... they just "don't do crossings". At least not in this case anyway.

RE: Railgrinder visits Sandpatch

Dense rubber here, I don't think there would be enough heat to burn the rubber, or at least the heat would not be on one spot for long. Like I said, they CONSTANTLY spray with water. Maybe they didn't grind your crossing becuase of the wood ties, Icy?
