RE: It Won't Fit!

HAHA ! there have actaully been occurances of double stack containers being torn wide open like sardine cans because clearances of bridges were too low, mostly in eastern cities like chicago. i saw a pic of a CN train where that happened in chicago in trains magazine some years back, the dispatcher was "released from his duties" after that 4 million dollar accident.

RE: It Won't Fit!

It has happened twice in Saginaw County only it involved oversized equiptment on the freeway.The first case was a portable drilling rig that damaged the overpass of 14'8" near Freeland. The rig ripped chunks out of the concrete girders. That was repaired by welding in new rerods and using concrete epoxy. (An expensive insurance bill and canned driver.)The second case involved a heavy tow truck towing a portable crane down 675. The boom of the crane hit the bridge at 70mph. The first girder was severly bent and the portable crane demolished. They had to rebuild half of that bridge, the girder couldn't be salvaged.The rail Tunnel into Canada, under the Detroit River had to be rebuilt so it could handle double stack and high cube trains for the auto industry.SRV Ron

We just had a similar "accident" here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, where a semi decided to haul his 13' high trailer under a rail overpass CLEARLY marked at 12' 6". Needless to say, the top of the trailer was peeled back about 20 feet. Cops figured he was doing 35 mph under the overpass. The paper mill wasn't too happy. The tracks on the overpass are used to haul coal into the plant. They shut the tracks down for 2 days while they inspected. Last I heard, CN was suing the trucking company.

During the accident investigation:
NTSB Investigator: "So, your train got stuck under the bridge?"
Engineer: "No, actually I'm delivering it to the new owner!"

Heh heh, you know in real life it wasn't until recently that the D&H supported double stacks. The had to do some major adjustments to the tunnels along the route (and there were oh so many of them) before they could run double stacks. Also if you take a trip to the Oneonta yard (or what's left of it today) you'll find that the bridge in question is gone. Cheers,
James.P.S. if you guys have questions or want to know more about the D&H a great little forum is here;
