RE: RE%3A One of My Favorite Recent Shots

Can't fool me with that, that's a real life shot you edited in Paint Shop Pro to make it look like an MSTS screenshot.
FYI, the way to fix the double image thingy is to leave no attachments. Paste the "http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/"; in, then upload the file, select the "3ebd35b74d422a4c.jpg" in the attachment window, and hit CTRL-X (cut) instead of CTRL-C. Then when you put the cursor at the end of the "http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/"; line and hit CTRL-V to paste, it's no longer in the attachment box and only shows up once.

Hey Jim,There are some cool things about that screenshot, but if you don't mind my saying so, I DO have some comments on your track textures.Have you tried reducing the saturation, or otherwise toning down the orange color on or near the rails? It may be just a personal preference thing, but to me it doesn't look very natural. Other than that, I really like the ties, including the 3D look (though I haven't yet seen any shots where the shadowing is on the FAR side of each tie. Anyway, feel free to ignore or consider the comment as you see fit. Keep up the good work Judd Spittler

RE: RE%3A One of My Favorite Recent Shots

That's fiddling with sharpness, brightness & contrast in PSP-7 that does that, *&^%$#@! ATI Radeon 9700 card the screenshots always come out a lot darker than what I see in the game (or is it a sim?). Might be faster than the Nvidia Ti-4400, but IMAO the quality is nowhere near as good.Personal preferences do play a part, I looked at Marc's screenshots of his 3D ties in that other thread, and altho they look good they're too even for my tastes. That's all them years looking at poorly maintained C&NW track in my 'hood, old cracked warped splintery ties even on the mainlines! Cleaned up quite a bit since the '94 UP takover, but I still prefer the look of weatherbeaten wood and rusty iron.

Hee-hee, just noticed the change in the subject thingy. Here's a couple without as much brightness and contrast, I just used the enhance, clarify gadget to get all the dull dimness out of it.One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 9One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 10Starting to look better and better, after running Lite.bat to strip out all the forest regions on PO&N6, then running AndersonHEAVY activity with the yard loaded with loose consists I'm getting 50FPS. Adding Phil's new treeline backdrops with assorted ponderosa pines (Timken, IIRC) and a few default fir trees with Judd's replacement textures, it's starting to look realistic without eating any frame rates, still getting 50FPS so far. Looks like I might be (rats here it comes can't stop it) ON THE RIGHT TRACK!

You may want to look into doing a monitor calibration tho Jim, I did that on my rig and the colors are accurate and true

RE: RE%3A One of My Favorite Recent Shots

Man, I thought you were in NYC, what are you doing up this late? You're gonna look like in the morning if you don't get some beauty sleep!Yeah, I know I did it once, somebody posted a link to a monitor test and mine was okay according to that. Probably I gotta fiddle with it again, lower brightness & contrast on the monitor until I can't see squat, then crank the game gamma on the ATI display thingamy up to ohmygod. WYSIWYG has been an elusive goal for me since the first color dot-matrix printers came out. I'm off to bed now myself, 1:34 AM here in the Windy City.

One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 14One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 15One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 16These billboard trees are really starting to cook. Upstate New York, that brings back memories. I'm sure you don't think of it as being mountainous, but me being from the flatlands it sure looked mountainous to me! I had some buddies from Buffalo, Ithaca, and Tonawanda, and I did my long solo cross country flight for my Private Pilot license from NAS Lakehurst to Schuykill Co. PA. to Ellenville, NY. I think LHJ in Ellenville was only a couple hundred feet MSL, but being a dumbass student I didn't really examine the elevations around it that closely! Hee-hee, looked like I was descending into the Grand Canyon!

RE: RE%3A One of My Favorite Recent Shots

"It's a small world after all.."Yeah, can't find my old logbook at the moment, but IIRC I landed there twice, first time I couldn't make it to Schuylkill County, had to turn back on account of the weather going IFR. Spring of '79, I don't know how it is today, but back then one of the requirements for the Private was you had to plan and fly a cross country trip, with two landings at least 100 nautical miles from the starting point and at least 100 nautical miles from each other. Common way to do that was to cut out an equalateral triangle, measured out with the scale on the sectional chart for 100nm per side. Then place the triangle on the chart with one point on the starting airport, and rotate around to find a couple of suitable airports just outside the triangle points. I started with the Washington sectional, from Lakehurst NJ going south there were a lot of restricted and prohibited areas around DC, so I changed to the New York sectional, rotated the triangle around to avoid the NYC terminal control area, and picked out Schuylkill Co. and Ellenville. Don't remember seeing any factories, but there was a river way down in that canyon (well, to me it was a canyon, how high are them cliffs?), and I remember flying over a LOT of tennis courts. Primary thing I remember about that day was - well, I wasn't exactly lost, just a little bewildered for half an hour or so, completely lost all VORTAC signals over them mountains (well, they looked like mountains to me), and since it was a flying club 1965 Cessna 172, the only thing I had left to work with was one of them coffee grinder style ADF antiques which spent half the time pointing at assorted iron deposits instead of the beacon. Eventually found New Jersey anyway, and made it home. Ah, the good old days.

RE: RE%3A One of My Favorite Recent Shots

Ah yes...Reminds me of '77 when I was doing MY three-legged cross-country. I can't even remember the towns I flew to (out of Millard Airport near Omaha), but I do remember that I got a little disoriented for about 15 minutes or so.I was tracking my progress via looking out the window and comparing to the sectional, but after a while of everything being where you expect it to be, you kind of get a little complacent. In the overall scheme of things, it was probably a valuable experience, and I wasn't really lost for that long.Hmmm, oh OK... yeah... log book... I went from Millard, NE to Hastings, NE to Creighton, NE... back to Millard. I am showing 4.3 hr. Hmmm, that seems kind of long for a Piper Cherokee 140... well, maybe I was lost longer than I thought. Judd Spittler

I've seen the green and yellow in every condition from fresh out of the paint shop, to very faded, rusty, and dirty. Your paint looks like
the real deal.My three legger went from MDW to Madison WI, to Davenport IA,

Boy, this is a great thread, thoroughly enjoying reading it...Here's my contribution for a 'realistic' shot:One of My Favorite Recent Shots – image 23Yeah I know you've seen it before, but I still rub my eyes when I view it.And you guys - Judd and Jim - flying those little planes: shoot, I'd be upside down in a tree in Shawn's backyard right quick! RE: One of My Favorite Recent Shots

This keeps up we'll have to move over to the flightsim forums. "I'd be upside down in a tree in Shawn's backyard right quick", damn near ended up there the first time I tried it, flying thru valleys following railroad tracks when the clouds are real low works fine until the railroad tracks go thru a tunnel! John;"Do you remember the time it took us two hours and fifteen minutes
to get to Madison, and only forty five minutes to get home?"Yep, serious winds that day. Cold, too. Had a similar case, had to fly a guy from NAS Willow Grove, Pa, to Williamsport, PA and back on a real windy night. All the 172s and 182s were booked and the T-34s were down, so we were stuck with a 150 for the trip. Flying at night over the Alleghenies with high winds you don't want to go too low, and even bucking the headwinds at 12,500 feet we were still bounced around like crazy for 3 1/2 hours. Return flight took about an hour and a half."I am showing 4.3 hr. Hmmm, that seems kind of long for a Piper Cherokee 140... well, maybe I was lost longer than I thought."Lost over Nebraska?! Hee-hee, that's flatter than Chicago, the 4.3 only proves the old adage that you don't get as much help from tailwinds as you get hindrance from headwinds. It just don't balance out."Some of these slides are in rough shape."Hey, we're in rough shape too, and we didn't spend 40+ years collecting dust at the bottom of a closet junkpile. I can't tell, is that me or you hanging on that boxcar? Q#2, Daddio wants to know if you're ever gonna drag your lazy carcass down here to see him.
