NHtrain- varies from coutry to country (or legal system to legal system), and can be a mine field for lawyers. - But basically: Whatever is declared "copyright by" or "author:..." cannot simply be re-published. Definitely not for money, of course, and not without explicit consent for free - unless the author has signalled consent by stating on his site / photo collection / impressum etc. that certain forms of re-publication for non-commercial purposes (or whatever the wording) is generally granted. - What you probably refer to as being legal is "quoting", and this can also include copyrighted pictures, not only copyrighted text. Generally, a quote
-- is some form of authority you refer to within a piece of work of your own
-- has to be clearly marked as quote, inlcuding full information on its author and the source it is drawn from.
-- it cannot be a substitute of your own work - using somebody else's findings / wordings / pictures for anything else than as piece of authority of your own works is commonly called plagiat (i.e. it is considered "stolen").One now may start a debate weather posting a direct link to an image on the authors own homepage is a legal form of "quoting". My understanding of the law would mean that this is indeed legal when, but ONLY when you make a reference in the text like " you can find an excellent picture showing the prototype in question on Jim Jake's "The Dash 9 Enthusiast" site, at (follows link to click) ".But at the end of the day it is Nels as the owner of the site who'd also end up in trouble if copyrighted material was published illegaly on his site. Bear that in mind, guys, and stick to the forum rules - there is even a link to click to get those rules to show!Cheers, keep having fun, and don't feed the lawyers without reasonLukas a.k.a Swissie

All photos and other similar creative works are copyright the moment they are created. However, use can subsequently be licensed or the work can be placed in the public domain at the discretion of the copyright owner (photographer in this case). Copyright registration only works to guarantee legal remedy for copyright infringement.Fair use (as defined by copyright law) should be acceptable. On this forum, is there a way to link to a photo without embedding it into your post? If the photo is part of an HTML page, it is, but I've tried to no avail to make an actual hyperlink to an image by itself. Many images, such as those on my own website, are presented alone (for now), and this forum software only embeds such images directly into a post. It's rather annoying, unless something has been changed recently.I'm not a lawyer - nor have I ever played one on TV - so take this advice for what it's worth. Contact a competent attorney should a serious or critical issue arise. For more information, you can also read the online circulars at www.copyright.gov.

Yes and No. It's been steadily happing with no one saying anything, and i decided to just clear some things up Right here and now, and because the whole train hobby is so small its only a matter of time someone see there picture posted with out permission and take legal action against this site, I'm pro-actively avoiding that.

What does SS mean? BTW, I agree with you all the way.... yes, I know I used to post copyrighted pics, but that was before I knew what the little C in a circle meant.
