I was gonna post this in the screenshot forum, then I noticed the traction forum has sorta died for a while, so I thought I'd post these here. Had to take the critter to the UIC pediatric dentistry school today to get 3 stuck baby teeth that were blocking the adult teeth yanked out. Not just all the action but all the fun too!I have to DRIVE to the DENTIST. I can't take the train! Double whammy. If I could I'd walk in AND out with a smile, instead of just in. Tim Frost

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

Actually the "square dance" is a perminant thing. Inbound trains arrive on the north track (no platform), then 1/2 way down cross over to the south track and unload passengers on the west end of the south track. After discharging passengers, the train will move east on the south track past the crossover to the east end of the platform where they will pick up passengers. Why, I have no idea. I guess b/c they can. Dosen't seem to efficient.-Chris

Wierd, ain't it? At the Harlem/Lake terminal they alternate sides of the platform for the outbounds, this one they decided to go with that strange crossover/crossback dance. Wasn't luck, Shawn, ya just gotta pick the right town to be born in. Nice thing is we don't have to travel very far to look at trains, in fact it's a challenge to drive any distance over a mile without seeing a train. Well, for cryin' out loud, Big Apple, grab a camera and get some pics! *&^%$#! traction forum is dyin' here! Hee-hee, actually I think that particular stop was longer than 20 seconds, we had already stopped and had the doors open for a few seconds before she came running up the stairs at the far end of the platform. Usually the motorman don't wait, but I suspect this guy held the train so he could watch the jiggle & bounce.

We picked up others along the Myrtle line before proceeding down to Chambers Street, where we exited the train. It the trip took all day, but it was real fun. Expect hordes of fan trips next year for the centennial of the subway.
Beat that, Chicago!

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

BTW: there was someone from Chicago on that trip. I don't know who he was, but he said that even the IRT cars would not be able to fit on the els due to width issues. Quite amazing. Come over to NYC next year for the centennial. It's gonna be lots of fun with lots of fan trips. There might even be antique cars in regular service on some days. If you come to New York, you will need to read up on the history of the New York Subway before arriving so that you will be able to talk with even the most knowledgeable transit buffs/straphangers. There is a fan trip on the 27th and again on the 28th of this month featuring D-type triplex cars and a steeplecab locomotive. I might be able to go on it that sunday, but I'll have to finish my homework the day before.

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

Those are BMT numbers. The rollsign on that train was from an R11. The other end car's rollsign was from an R1-9 I think

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

couple things I know but NYCTA stuff. Picked up off the web for the most part. The IND subway cars can't be used anywhere else than the IND lines. They're narrower than the other cars. (or am I thinking IRT?) Whever the case, the other cars can't be used on that line because again...the cars are narrower, and the clearance would be too tight.
Nycta cars are about 10 inches wider than CTA el cars.CTA cars are basically street cars, modified for overhead use. Ok, now they're not, but they were originally.NYCTA field tested a couple unit trains. Cars that were seven cars long but hooked together similar to spine container cars. (with the truck bridging the gap between cars. Most of the NYCTA is double tracked, save for 1 location where there is a single track bridge over a street. It's the only location this happens.

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

IRT cars are narrower and shorter than other cars. IND/BMT cars cannot be used on IRT lines because they won't fit in the tunnels. 75 foot long cars (R44/46, R68/68A) cannot run on the J,M,Z, or L trains. The NYCTA is mostly 4 track or 3 track. The only single track section is on the franklin shuttle from north of botanic garden to the end of the line at franklin/fulton.

Speaking of the IRT, is the (7) going to get the "New Technoledgy?" I was reading the Other Side of the Tracks Message Board and there is a debate over whether the (7) will recieve the R142/R142A's or keep the R62A's.

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

A six car set of R142S cars has been testing on the 7 line, but they will not be in regular service for a while, owing to the neccessary rebuilding of the Corona Shops. 80 cars will be arriving in sets of 5 and 6 to allow for 11 car trains. Also new for the MTA: R143 cars 8205-8212 are testing the Onyx traction motors that will be used on the R160s. The R110Bs are to be reinstated on the A using R160 components. The Times Square platforms of the Shuttle will be modefied to handle 5 car trains of R142s and R110As. The R160 will look like the R143, except it will have a silver front. The first R160s should arrive for testing sometime next year. The Canarsie line will go CBTC and ATO in 2005, followed by the 7 eventually. A set of R40Ms still resides amongst R42s and R143s in Fresh Pond Yard and two sets of R42s still reside in Canarsie Yard. 6 sets of redbirds are still run on the 7 but will be retired by the R142S order. Just a brief update on the equiptment status of the New York Subways.

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

I read somewhere, that the narrowness of the tunnels was done on purpose so the other stock couldn't be operated on the IRT tracks.

RE: A trip to the Dentist - 56k alert.

I think they might have been built to the specifications of the elevated railroads already in operation over 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 9th avenues so that subway equiptment could be used on the els. The above els had been purchased by the IRT by the time the subway had opened.
