Has anyone done some upgrades to the SOUND folder? Playing around the other day in train sim, doing some switching on the Canton, I had a sudden rush of brain activity. What view do most simmer use when switching? A some what distant external view. A view many of us used in real life watching the trains around us. Here's the problem . In real life, you hear the loud thunderous booms as the railcars are switched and roll down thier rightful track and slam into sitting railcars. GOD WE LOVE IT! In train sim... we have a "click click" As anyone brought that loud switch booms to train sim with improved sound files???

RE: Sound effects improvements

Man - - - that is one part of Trainz - prior to TRS, cause haven't tried the new version - I really really miss... When a train starts up - you get the cascading booming sound effect as the locomotive takes the tension out of the cars... It was so kewl... Starts at the beginning of the train and rolls all the way through to the very end... The coupler sounds are definately better on the "dark" side... Regrads,
Scott

Yes, there are several upgrades, some of which are freeware. I know there is one stand alone update that is only sounds and no other files (see this thread: http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/568.html ) There is also a sound upgrade that comes with the NALW NS D40-9C set, which is freeware from the file library. Finally, MLT released a great set of rolling stock sounds with their payware Cascades Crossing route. I think all three sound great and are a VAST improvement over the default crap. EDIT: Rereading your post, the sounds that I refer to do not offer the "Boom" sound that you (and I!) like so much. They are a much greater improvement over the default "rolling-stock-on-the-move" sounds, though.

RE: Sound effects improvements

All,Hmmm - seems like you should be able to at least swap out the coupler sound fairly easy...I am surpised one of the sound guys hasn't attempted to replicate that thunderous boom when you couple cars...There is a great deal of talent around here...Regards,
Scott

RE: Sound effects improvements

HiI looked at this a bit. What would be needed would be a way to detect when the coupler is either pushed in or pulled out and then play a 'boom' sound.I did try a 'boom' sound based on when the car started moving and yes that did make a sound but so unprototypical that I quickly threw that idea away.Without a proper triger, there's probably no way to do this that would be both satisfactory and somewhat realistic.GaryG

RE: Sound effects improvements

I believe the sound used for "couple" is also the sound used for "uncouple," but I could be wrong. If not, I'm pretty sure there are some faint "boom" sounds in MLT's package and you could replace the "couple" sound with the "boom" sound just by copy/pasting the "boom" sound file and renaming it to the "couple" sound file. Of course, if "couple" and "uncouple" are the same file name, you'd get a "boom" when you uncoupled, too, which would not be prototypical. I don't know how, exactly, you'd get a prototypical "boom" to sound whenever you started. Also, remember that the real-life "boom" sound when starting or stopping a train is often indicative of poor train handling skills. I'm sure freight customers cringe every time they hear that sound.

If someone could get me a sound cilp of the "boom" sound I could make a sound file for cars that when they just start moving they will make the boom noise. Sounds like an interesting project, and something that would really add to the game.I'm pretty sure I can do this, but having a sound clip would make it even more possible Sound effects improvements – image 2
