Anybody installed the new replacement sounds that appeared in the FL today? Just curious what they are and how they sound.

RE: Replacement sounds

LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-04 AT 05:05 AM (EST)

Hi Clayton,Those sounds are meant to replace the default wagon sounds. The default freightwagons and passenger coaches do have little or no sound at all and also given the fact that the AI trains produce no sound audible in the cabine. Last time I checked in real life oncoming trains can be heard from inside a train. So that's where these files come in handy. Freight trains have now their own sound and passenger coaches as well which can be heard from whitin the cabine. The sound and sms files come from Johann Riffel, he also made the sound for the German Railroad series. I do know that the used wave files are a bit of a compromise because I don't have better sounds right now. If you install the new files (no assembly required) you will hear what a freightwagon should sound like, also you will hear the brakes being released and the passenger coaches screech just as they come to a halt. Of course the sound for passenger coaches is good too!If you want to try the 'package' I do have also some modified files for the genesis, acela and hhp, those are not included. For the assembly, if you would edit the *eng.sms file in the engines folder and take the scalabiltygroup 0 and move the entires inside deactivation into activation you will be able to hear the oncoming engines as well as you would hear the wagons. It must be stated that this only works for coaches and wagons which make use of the generic sms files inside the main folder. (ie Genfreightwag1.sms)I hope I clarified it a bit.Regards,
Richard Haagsma

RE: Replacement sounds

I agree with the comments. I ran a huge coal train along the part of my route that is done and i was blown away by the sounds. THEY ARE GREAT!--DriftonClinch Valley DistrictRails = 100%

RE: Replacement sounds

Well, I was going to start a new thread before coming over here and finding one regarding the new sounds file. Maybe I am doing something wrong here Richard, and this is not to say that the sounds aren't correct or anything but to me they sound (the wagon sounds) awfully loud and tinny on my machine. Now I have a pretty good sound set up so I don't think it is that but are wagons supposed to be constantly screeching or making that tinny sound all of the time? I admit that I am not a railfanner so really have only heard the trains around here but I don't recall them making that much noise.
And please don't take this as a dig on the program. I know Clayton knows trains very well and if he likes them, then perhaps I am wrong but they seem to be awfully loud and tinny sounding on my machine. Maybe I have too good a system (I do have a good sound system) and that is why they are sounding so loud and screechy all the time. I have cut the sound down in the game and it doesn't sound quite so bad but I am just having trouble believing that you would hear this screeching sound all of the time.
Clayton, give me some feedback on this, ok? It is hard to explain but on my system they just don't sound right. Perhaps if I made a wav of the sound, if I can figure out how to minimize the game to do it, and send it to you you could tell me if this is what you are hearing or if I have something set up wrong. They just don't sound right to me. Again, this is not reflection on the program. It is probably just my machine or sound setup??? Any feedback from someone else on this?TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: Replacement sounds

One little concern:If one modifies the sg0 file as suggested, and activates the cab sound
for even a short range; well what then of the one or two AI helpers
you may have immediately behind you? Those sounds heard from within the cab of the lead engine might get too up close and personal. And this might be exacerbated if your engines use common sound files as is the case in KHP2 and some other arrangements. Fact is, I tried this and got some real outrageous static while in the cab which I believe came from the helpers via the common sound files. Outside the train, though, everything was working wonderfully, particularly the air brake sounds. The moment I put the sg0 files back to default, the static stopped, but the outside sounds continued to work well.I think in some cases, one might have to make a distinction between doing this in AI engines, as opposed to helpers. One work around might be to use different sound configs for helpers. I did a little experimentation with this when I put together one of my activities.
For example AI yard frieghts had enhanced sg0 files so they could be heard passing from within your cab, while the helper engines had enhanced SG1 files for outside sound, but were completly stripped of sounds other than what they would produce externally (outside view). For the most part, I am really impressed by Richards sound arrangement, and I continue to use it, but one might have to be a little cautious about what happens in the SG0 file where helpers are concerned. Just a thought.

RE: Replacement sounds

Thanks Richard, I hope you didn't make these changes just based upon my comments. Like I said, I have a very high end sound machine on this thing and it could be just that, or perhaps I had an older version of the program. Just sounds very tinny to me like you would hear if you had all empty tin box cars running on the track. Hard to explain. I will give them a try and let you know what I think. Like I said, once I cut the sound down a little in the game they did sound better. I just didn't think that the sounds would be constant like that.Richard, I thank you for all of your work on this. I know how hard it is to get something like this to work on every different kind of sound card that is out there and I appreciate your efforts in attempting to make the program better.
I hope you haven't taken any of these comments as a reflection on the quality of your program and hope no one else has. Like I said it may just be my own sound system that is causing this. And I hope everyone will give them a try. They may sound different on another machine and probably do. Thanks for trying to make the game better. It is appreciated.TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: Replacement sounds

@ Yardlimit,You're correct about the SG0 group, the best solution would be that the creators of engines and rolling stock would create their own SG groups and distinctive sound. My solution is actually a quick 'n dirty fix. @ Tim,No problem Tim, I appreciate your kind words! The zip I included in my previous post contains a better wave file, you might want to try that one. Again, the best solution would be that every single car, wagon or engine has it own sound, but that is something for the model manufactures. Regards,
Richard Haagsma

RE: Replacement sounds

Actually Richard, I apologize for not getting back to you sooner but yes, this did help tremendously and does sound much better. Don't know what you did but actually sounds very realistic to me. I have kept it on my machine obviously. Thank you for listening (no pun intended) and making the changes. I appreciate it tremendously. Thanks so much,TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: Replacement sounds

I think I prefer the originally set better. This new set sounds too "clean," like the cars just came off the assembly line while the other set sounds more screetchy. Maybe my sound system just sucks, but I live about 30 feet from a mainline on a curve and the first set of sounds hits a heavy coal train coming through pretty much dead on. (Now tell me why I want to hear that awful sound coming from my pc when the real thing drives me nuts!! )

RE: Replacement sounds

Well, Clayton, you know trains better than I do but if you heard them on my machine, with the first version, I think you would agree that they were too loud and too screechy. The second file sounds screetchy as well, at least on my machine, but not as bad as file one. Like I said, I have a very excellent sound system on this thing and that may be the difference.
Anyway I thank Richard for creating these sounds as they sound better than the originals. A whole lot better. Thanks again for your quick response Richard. You do excellent work and is appreciated.TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: Replacement sounds

When asked if I wanted to change one file for another,I said "yes" only to the files that had a larger size then the default sounds,so I have not taken all of the chages yet.As a result,I can sit inside an F3 carbody diesel and for the 1st time I can actually feel the heavy, dull vibration from inside that engine..VERY realistic and the sounds of changing throttle up or down is "dead perfect"!!!!!..
Just curious how those "smaller" sized files might be better sound value than some of the larger default files??
