Hey a novel idea just hit me about geting the 2nd, 3rd and so on locomotives to rev up along with the lead unit. Has anyone tried to get a speed curve to go with the engine RPM not the track speed of the unit??? This just crossed my mind and thought it was worth a try.Steven

RE: AI locos and 2nd and 3rd locos reving up...

Hey thanks for the info. I checked into the dieselswest locos that I have. They are the UP U33C's this is the controler for the AI or 'helper' locos:
FrequencyCurve(
SpeedControlled
CurvePoints ( 11
I do believe that this relates to the track speed right???? Besides they don't seem to rev up eather. Thanks again!!!Steven

RE: AI locos and 2nd and 3rd locos reving up...

Stuart,Regarding that thread from September 2002 and your message with the changes, if I wished to modify some diesels to respond sound-wise similar to the player(lead) unit, exactly where would I copy and paste that text to?? Does it replace a portion of the text in the say gp38.eng file? If so, where? Thanks very much for a reply.Bob Stapleshttp://www.thebluecomet.com

RE: AI locos and 2nd and 3rd locos reving up...

AI Engines.First let me say that I am sure more knowledgeable people than I have explained this much somewhere. I will stick to diesels as I have not experiment with steam and only a little with electrics. Anyway here goes:
When a loco is in use as AI, either at the head of an AI train or as a helper in a player driven one, the variable that is used for the throttle does not seam to have any use. MSTS realizes this when the loco is in use on an AI train and uses the generic diesel, steam or electric sound SMS file from the global sounds directory. When the loco is in use as a helper in a driven train, it uses the correct SMS file for that loco (in the sound directory of the loco) but because the throttle value is zero you hear the sound of the loco in idle.
As far as I know there is no way to correct this so what most people do is cheat and link the engine revs to speed.
My approach is to have 2 types of loco, one you can drive and the other is strictly for helper and AI use. I insert the letters AI in the name of the loco (something like BN AI GP40 #1234 lead or BN AI GP38 #1234 trail). I will explain the “lead and trail” later. I make a copy of the entire loco directory again adding the letters AI. Therefore I have in my trains directory 2 locos folders.BN_GP40_1234
BNAI_GP40_1235 (I reskin the loco, change its number and sometimes other details)An AI loco has the cabview directory removed, all lights removed if it is a trailing unit and the front lights on if a lead unit. Now the sound. In the sound folder, I delete all the cab WAV files (those not beginning with “x_”) and most of the external ones. Now we come to the 2 ways of altering the sound.1. Use the 8 throttle WAV files and arrange so that as the speed increases, it changes which WAV file is played. Typically 0 mph is run 0, 1 mph to 5 mph is run 1, 5 mph to 10 is run 2 etc.2. Use the speed variable to change the frequency a single WAV file is played back at. So at 0 mph the file is played at 9000HZ then as the speed goes from 1 to 3 mph ramp up the frequency to 9500 then leave it the same until 5mph. From 5 to 6 change to 10000. Thus in the eng.SMS file we will have a speed curve something like: -8.000 11025
-7.000 10000
-1.000 9000
0.000 8000
1.000 9000
7.000 10000
8.000 11025The figure on the left is the speed in mph times 2, on the right the frequency the wave file is played.
The negative figures are to take account of the loco running in reverse.
And that is it for a trailing loco. On a lead loco I arrange the bell to be sounding if the speed is between 1 and 5 mph. When the speed drops from 0.5 to 0 mph it plays once the air brake wav file. Some of the lead locos play a horn file as they approach. So an AI consist (Which I always name with the letters AI in) consist of a lead loco followed by tailing ones.I am sure I have explained this poorly and left out a lot of details, but if any one is interested in a sample loco you can always drop me an email.Andy jK

Hello!Sounds interesting (pardon the pun!) I have noticed that the exhaust works in concert on all units. Any way to tie sound to the exhaust? Maybe some of the expert code hackers can figure that one out!Food for thought.Bob
