Hey all, DesielsWest and I have released a wonderful horn pack. It has been in the file library for a few days. Could you tell me what you think, and I don't mind if the comments are good or bad. Thanks! Oh, BTW, I have uploaded today a whistle that I hope you all like. It goes really good with the Nickel Plate Berkshires.Later NW 1218 LONG LIVE THE F40C!

Those are some nice recordings..BUT.. I seriously question where you got some of them from.. Now I'll tell you up front right now.. I have listened to Five Chime Consultant's horns OVER and OVER again I have every horn put in categories on my system.Several of these recordings sound almost near perfect to those found on this site: http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns however, this is what is mentioned in your readme.txt:Original horns - Copyright 2003Credits: The two K3lAs and the S3L were done by 5CCC and they are great. Chicago area horns are original recordings made by Ron Furto. Modifications of all horns done by John Means. Diesels West provided most of them after he gave me the idea of a horn pack. What's 5CCC supposed to mean? Could that possibly stand for Five Chime Consultants? Here is the legal aspects for Five Chime Consultants: http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns/legal.html
Neither John Means nor Ron Furto are listed here. "5CCC" as credits is not sufficient. How the heck are others to know who or what that is anyways???? As you can see on that legal page, there are MANY people who contributed to those recordings..Back when I was thinking about using one of the horns from that site, I made sure to ask Evan BEFORE releasing it, let alone modifying it. (In the end though, I never did use that recording). And if you wish to make the argument that 5CCC is NOT meant to "ACT" as some kind of credit from Five Chime Consultants then there is this aspect ALSO:-your "k3la"'s long blast sounds exactly like the long blast at 00:19 of k3la_2.wav (at Five Chime).. you can even hear the exact same crossing bells in the background!-your "k3la2" sounds very familiar to Five Chime's k3la_11up.wav-your "s3l" sounds exactly like the sound at 00:03 of s3l_6sf.wavWell, it just goes to show your credibility.. I certainly hope other 3rd parties are not being jipped here. I'll continue to review the rest of your uploaded sounds to compare them with all the recordings I have (Five Chimes', and others).

The K3LAs and the S3L are by the 5 Chime Consultants. I did get permission from Evan. I have done this before. I have released some of the 5 chime's sounds with their permission. I also sent a copy to Desiels West, asking him if he wanted anytheing changed. He changed a few things. If permission was granted, which it was because, I saved all of the MSTS related emails including that one where he gave me permission, then it is legal. I always ask for permission if using other peoples sounds. I wouldn't want to steal anybodys works. I am uploading a corrected readme. Download it and you will see what I ment.Later NW 1218 LONG LIVE THE F40C!

RE: New Horn Pack

Hi cdntrains! It kind of sounds to me like the guy got the permission he needed. I deduced that from the Readme. As for the two horns you "seriously question", you may want to double-check with the 5 Chime Consultants before you use them for anything. I sure would. As for the other horns, you will definitely need to ask for permission from all those who created them before you do anything silly, like, release them for fun in your own loco.

RE: New Horn Pack

Copy the wavs into the folder. Open the eng.sms file and edit the horn line(s) and change the wav file name. Save if you want to use it for all engines aliased to this. If you want to use the different horns save it with a unique name, I usually use the engine type (i.e. 645KL3eng.sms). Do NOT forget to add the .sms to the file name or it will save it as a text file. Then do the same for the cab.sms file. Then edit the eng files to point to the new sms files. One thing I do is put all my alias lines in a seperate text file so I don't have to keep typing it over and over, copy and paste is easier, faster, and less prone to typing errors. RE: New Horn Pack

This seems like a good place to ask this question:There seem to be many horns in use; but I surmise that all locomotives of a single model from a certain manufacturer don't neccessarily have the same horn. Is this correct? In other words, my '93 Chevy Cavalier has the same horn as all other '93 Cavaliers, but a given GP38-2 won't have the same horn as another GP38-2, right? Do different railroads use different horns, or has it something to do with location (saw something here about Chicago horns)? Thanks,MC

In the readme, it says Chicago horns, those were the horns recorded in the Chicago area by Ron Furto. Thats what it meant. Later NW 1218 LONG LIVE THE F40C!

RE: New Horn Pack

That's it. R.R.'s saw their horns as a trademark that differentiated them from the others. It really was a big deal to the bigger railraods. As an example the Rock Island used road horns on their switchers. RIWEST

And the New Haven had my all time favorite (and Nels'and Phil Moberg's too) the Hancock Airwhistle which was designed to sound like a steam engine's whistle....Chuck Schneider

RE: New Horn Pack

I had started to midify sms files to use different horn as I stated in the other post. Maybe I'll take a quick break from activities to finish this as I really do like the Horns West sounds.Kevin Arceneaux
