Well the UP uses the: Nathan P3, K3HAR24, K3H, K5LAR24, and has a few old cast P3's(UP C44-9W 9800 has one.). They also heavily favored Leslie S3K. The SL5-T was used on some of the DDA40X's, U50's, and the last one that I know of is on the UP's E-units.
The SP used: The P3, and had just started getting into the K3(SD-70M's and SD40-2M's) before the UP took it over. They also had a few S3K's too. Also on some of the SP GP38-2 rebuilds, they were rebuilt from old SCL & L&N GP38's and retained their S5-T's.
The CN heavily uses the M3H. They can be ear percing and rib tickling. Especially on their SD-70/75I's. Loud is the key word. So does the CP.
The BNSF uses the K3H, M3, Leslie S3K, the former BN S3L's, and I have even seen a few M5's.
The CSX & NS are heavy five chimers. They both use the K5HAR in all sorts of different arrangements and pitches, and also they use the M5.
They now have the S3K's due to the Conrail locos having them on them. And also a few K3's when they inherited the 3 GP-60's and the SD-70M's from EMD. Also on the SD-70's were a few P3's. I know that isnt all but its what I can remember

Just something to add from the Canadian perspective (you can also find certain types and some of the roads that use them on Five Chime Consultants: http://atsf.railfan.net/airhorns/)CP & CN --> today: K3's H's or L's (no difference, same horn, just slightly different manifold in this case)VIA --> K3's and K5LA'sBC Rail --> K3's and K5H's (love those echoing in the mountains! )(unfortuneately, due to Canada's D# minor chord requirement, I don't hear much else in the way of horns up here.. It gets rather mundane.. )I'm not sure on this, but I haven't heard an M horn on a CP or CN in a LONG time.. I have only seen/heard K3's on them.. cdntrains

Thank you. I should have explained what my purpose for this is. I am planning on writing some diesel sms files for using the different horns available. This way you can use the right horn and the user will not have to do the file mods, all they will need to do is have the horns sounds in one folder.

AT&SF: Predominantly Lesie S3LR on freight, S5TR on passenger.
Some older passenger F-units had Nathan M5R24. All the F-units were delivered with either Leslie A200 or Wabco E2 single-noters.SP and UP were covered well in a preceding post.D&RGW preferred the Nathan M-3R1 on most of their stuff.Rock Island liked the nathan P-5R24.New Haven, Seaboard Air Line, and Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern used the Hancock 4700 air whistles. NH also had the 4710 (minus shroud) whistles on almost all of their "Washboard" MU cars (some got the 4700's in later years when shopped).Long Island liked the Nathan M-3R1.The GP38-2's were delivered with Leslie SL-3LR's but later went to the Airchime K5LA (some had P-5A's, all forward -- and some got M-3R1's). (A couple of their FA's came from Western maryland and actually kept the Nathan M-5's for awhile.) Amtrak....when in its infancy, whatever was on the units when they came from original owners. You name it, it was there. The 700's (P30CH) were delivered with the Nathan P-5A all forward, as were F40's 200-229. F40's 230-up and all other power came with K5LA's.While I did not elaborate on which horns went to which roads (as most roads have tried everything at one time or another...) I did collaborate with a gentleman who was the director of Amtrak's motive power development int he 1970's and wrote two articles on various air horns in EXTRA 2200 SOUTH.
