I did some nice diesel-sounds but have the problem that they are not correctly triggered by variable2. If I stay put and rev up everything seems ok. But after chosing forward and shifting the 1st gear the loco idles along for some time up until about 12mph and then begins to rev up. I tried every combination of Variable2 values but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Always first idling along then... What am I doing wrong? do I have to change something in the *.eng file probably?
A review of the message below and its associated thread may help. It is not specific to variable2 but that may not be the problem insofar as the addition of other "running" sounds may be pushing it out of the cue.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID11/303.html#2EDIT: Fixed html# HTH,Mike
Sorry, but that didn't help. But I found a relation between the maxrpm and minrpm in the *.eng file and the triggering of the sound-wave files. It's obviously not possible to use the real life rpm values, one has to adjust the rpmvalues to get the sound they should produce and not the other way round as it should be. There is still a lag between starting to roll and revving up. Other suggestions ??
A line in the .eng file which can have a dramatic effect on the rate of change for Variable2 isDieselEngineMaxRPMChangeRate( xx )where xx is number of rpm's per second. I recon that it needs to be about 75-100 in most cases, but this is dependant on the actual loco of course. If it is too small then it is possible that FrequencyCurves will respond far too slowly for good sound effects timing. Also, if you have very long sound samples they have to play out to the end before the next cued sound starts to play. Unless you introduce cue points and use the StartLoopRelease and ReleaseLoopRealeaseWithJump commands.
I have the rpms ChangeRate at 80 and shiftign it around doesn't change much. My wav file is quite short, so that couldn't be the cause. But now I've got another question: Maybe it's a granularity problem. With volume curves the granularity values seem clear to me, but the frequency curves I don't understand. Having basic values from 0 to 1 how does granularity 100 fit in? There are different values for SpeedVariables in the ACELA they range from -150 to 150. There I can see three possible steps for the curve although it is strange enough only three steps...
Granularity for frequency curves seems to me to represent the number of Hz step at which changes will be made. The smaller then the smoother the pitch shifting sounds in the sim.I've re-read your first post and spotted you say "first gear". Have you looked at how the KIA31 sms's are setup?
Thanks for all input! In fact I began with using and changing the Kiha31 sms files. I'm now down to 2mph before the engine begins to revv up. Not quite satisfactory but I can live with it although I still would like to change this. I'm now using only one *.wav and changing frequency and volume. Now I discovered that those values seem not truly to be linked with revs or in other words the throttle. Variable2 seems not very different from the Speed-Variable. Because when I cut the throttle back to 0%, the frequency and volume curve don't fall back to low values but they go through all the motions from high speed to low speed to stop just in reverse way to acceleration. This should not be?? Does anybody know what Variable2 is exactly for diesels. ( I read the posting for steamers but that can't be relevant for diesels too.)I read somewhere about an other sms file for a loco that uses also one *.wav file but can't find the posting anymore. If someone has the knowledge, please could you point me in the right direction for comparing the files.
