I was making air compressor sound files for trolleys today. Since trolleys make very little sound at idle, the air compressor sound is very noticeable. I also used the full sequence, as it was when I originally recorded it, so it's longer than the default MSTS air compressor sounds. When I tried it out, and the inside sounds were just fine. However, I could not hear the air compressor sound in the outside (#2, 3, 4, 5, camera) views. I figured I screwed up somewhere, so I put the MSTS sounds back in. Still no air compressor sound in the outside views. Then I tried the default (unmodified) MSTS locomotives. Still no air compressor sounds in the outside views. All the other outside sounds are there (i.e. horn, bell, sanding, coupling, etc.), just no air compressor. I sent a message to Tim Muir, whom I'm working with on a project, and he couldn't hear the air compressor in the outside views either.I tested the sound files by themselves, and they play back just fine in the sound editor, and the outside sound plays in the MSTS inside view if I put it in the cab.sms file. Of course, it plays back at a higher pitch than it should, but that tells me that it is correctly recorded for use in the eng.sms file.Inside sound is recorded at 11025 hz, stereo, 16 bit. Outside sound is recorded at 11025 hz, mono, 16 bit.Does anyone have any further information on this? Is it possible to play the air compressor in the outside view?
RE: Can't hear the air compressor in the outside view
This is an MSTS bug. Some of the sound triggers don't work properly in different views(i.e.-you don't have the horn in passenger views), and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about it unless Kuju releases another patch. I went crazy trying to get the outside compressor sounds to work when I was doing my Acela/HHP-8 sound update. I concluded that they don't work due to a bug in MSTS, since I couldn't find anything wrong with my .sms files. The same triggers(#12 and #13) worked fine for in cab views.

jtr1962I agree there's a problem with those particular triggers working outside. I was able to get the compressor sounds outside by moving the ExternalCam ( ) statement in Cab.sms file from Deactivation to Activation. This, of course, put the CabCam sounds outside as well, meaning that I hear the clicks of various switches (i.e. headlight switch click) outside. However, this indicates that the #12 and #13 triggers can be played outside, just not in the eng.sms file.I tried moving the CabCam ( ) statement from Deactivation to Activation in the eng.sms file, and the ExternalCam ( ) statement from Activation to Deactivation, and got NO sounds outside. Hmmmm. I would have thought I'd get Cab sounds only outside. It would appear that I need to get just the compressor sound in the cab.sms file to play in the ExternalCam. I tried placing the ExternalCam ( ) statement in the compressor stream, but that didn't work. More experimentation is in order. Thanks for your reply. I wasn't sure if it was a bug, or my sloppy editing.
