Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach – image 1

Has anyone saw the clip where a UP stacker with a SD70M hits a yellow jeep on the beach? The engine had a five chime horn and was really blowing and a bunch of people were standing around. After it hits the jeep and gets stopped the camera moves over there to the jeep. Apparently it looked like two people were in there. Now i've also heard this was a rig up and those were dummies. Can anyone verify the authenticity of this video?

I'd say it's a rig up as there would surely not be a bunch of people near something that'll get thrown off the tracks by a heavy locomotive and the camera there would also indicate it's a rig up. And if the people in the jeep would have a chance to escape I'm sure they would. It may be a scene for a movie or something but I could be wrong, it could be real too./JonatanSteam rules!

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

Is it just me or does the damage to the jeep look a little light compared to the speed at which the train hit it at?

I can't confirm if this tape is real or not but the location is Glamis California which is in the desert (not beach) on the Yuma Subdivision. The area is popular with off roaders. And yes some SD70M's have five chime horns. The clip appears real as there were no railroad staged events out there but I don't know when this happened.PatchCrew

Them five chime K5LAs were one and only one order of the UP SD70M. Personally, they are my favorite UP SD70Ms cause if they aren't crapped up, they sound pretty nice.

Hm...It looks real to me..but yes, the jeep should have been more smashed up than THAT. Maybe they did fake it, and switched out the trashed jeep for a one in better shape?

NS_sd70m go and stand in front and let it bust your butt then come back and tell us if it's fake.Besides what does the type of horn has to do with anything.Having worked for the NS and have been involved in crashes similar to those I don't see anything fake about it.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastTrain Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach – image 21

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

Where did the Jeep go after being hit? It seems to disappear right when the train passes. And like the one person said above, the Jeep is still in relatively good contition after being hit. After reading some other posts, I admit that I was wrong about the horn. The fact that somebody said that it was a five-chime horn on a UP train (and after I heard it for myself in the video) originally got me to think that somebody made this video on their computer and put in their own sounds. If this really happened and people really did die in this, then it is truely a senseless tragedy. Does anybody have any links to news reports to confirm that this really happened?

Well since we didn't see the impact due to the angle who's to say that the driver didn't come close to clearing the track and was clipped enough by the lead loco to roll it over.I'll give you a true story from the NS that happened to me.It was July 3 1999.We'd just left the yard on a clear signal and was running about 35mph and struck a pedestrian at a guarded crossing. The man lived and walked to the ambulance. The only visible injuries that I saw to this man was his dislocated right should and a laceration to the back of his head.Yes he lived to tell about it.Here in Savannah I went to an accident involving a lady that I know. Her vehicle was struck by a CSX train and she also walked away. The front of her car was struck as she tried to cross the tracks.Damage was not that great looking at the car.Unless you're an accident reconstructionist and understand the dynamics of an accident it's hard to say how the outcome will be.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastTrain Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach – image 22

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

I couldn't say this is fake or real, but it is disturbing to say the least. As for the damage to the jeep (or lack thereof) this can be explained easily enough. It doesn't take much for a train to just clip a car or truck and "fling" that vehicle. After the intitial contact or "collision", it was the jeeps "flight" and crash that killed the occupants...not the train, or so it would seem. Several years ago in Spokane, Washington, 4 people (2 women and 2 men) were in a 4x4 doing some "offroad" fun. This took place near some BNSF (then it was just BN) mainline tracks that were posted at 60mph. It just so happens I was near there at a park when the train collided with the 4x4. I did not see the collision nor hear a collision. I did hear the loco horns blaring...alot. Someone told us that a train hit a 4x4 and we went to go see. What we saw (we arrived the same time as the police and fire department) was the 4x4 upside down and only one person laying near the site. This person (a man) was obviously injured, but not too seriously. The other 3 were under the 4x4....dead.The weird part was I would have expected the 4x4 to be in a zillion pieces or at least mangled beyond recognition. Not so. After a few days in the paper, it was reported by witnesses and the engineer that the 4x4 damn near made it...except that the loco's step ladder went under the bumper and lifted the 4x4 up on it's tail end and "flipped" back pretty fast. This in turn threw one occupant out and the other 3 were pinned in and crushed. The truck was set back on it's wheels driven on a tow carrier, bumper was torn off is all.All it takes is a little energy to propel a vehicle enough to cause alot of harm to the occupants. If this video is real, then it is a sad case and a total waste of human life. It does seem "strange" that the train had stopped (Intermodal) in the middle of the desert seeing that the train was coming upon the accident scene rather fast. Perhaps it did stop because of the accident. Has anyone read or heard of this accident? Is it recent? Or better yet...is it fake?Kip

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

which is why if you're railfanning at a crossing and see a car about to get nailed, always run away from the tracks diagonally in the direction the train came from. Less chance of getting nailed yourself.

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

Maybe I'm being optimistic, but I think its a fake, and here's why.As others have said, the jeep doesn't seem to badly damaged and all that. But maybe it was just 'clipped'. (it does seem to disappear in a cloud just as the engine gets there)But after the collision, you can see a leg under the front bumper and a 'body' laying on the ground. And people just casually walking by while the camera operator films a bit more. Now, don't you think at least *one* person in the crowd would at least walk up to the 'victims' and try to help?? Unless they could all see that they were dummy's.Or if you're really cynical, at least *one* person in the crowd would run up and start rifling through the wreckage looking for money/jewelry?Anyway, that's my take on it.

RE: Train Hitting A Yellow Jeep On Beach

I'm sure the collision was real. The jeep was stuck on just one rail and high-centered on the steep ballast shoulder. The impact would have spun the jeep off to one side, and would not have totally destroyed it beyond recognition. And there just can't be any kind of way that the Union Pacific Railroad would participate in such a stunt. There's a obvious gap in the video from just after the jeep gets hit, until the camera person crosses either through the stopped train or underneath by way of the drainage wash. The video from the jeep site is so blurry from the movement of the camera person that I personally can't tell just exactly what is on or around the jeep.I think it quite possible that after the dumb a$$ got his jeep hung up and hit, that one or more of the people present decided to ham up the video with amateurish looking fake carnage.

I think that the body in the front of the jeep looks like a crash test dummy, but that's just my opinion. ,Josh
