Stricter Rules Coming – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jul-01-04 AT 00:01 AM (EST)

The past couple of weeks have gone way to far.. New, much much more stricter rules are coming. It was nice to keep it somewhat laxed, but the childishness, the fighting. It is going to stop, one way or another, and it WILL be stopped. What to expect?Attack and/or flame another user, User Post will automatically deleted. No Questions and No reason will be given by mods. Shall you proceed, you'll be givin' 2 warnings, and if not still obeying. Your Gone, simple as that.Any and ALL off topic posts are no longer permitted... keep it on trains, train sim and simulators regarding trains. Nothing Else. Want to talk about cars, planes, go elsewhere, there is plenty of forums on the internet for that.If you want to show pics, screenshots etc. Use the screenshot forum. That is what it is there for.More rules will be added, perheps even some restrictions to the File Library as well to prevent seriously buggy routes, locomotives and activities....We'll see, but it is coming. When? You'll find out soon enough.

Don't really mind the "thightening down" here Macster, I think we could all see it was coming (not to say it won't do any good either!)Question though; Are EBay links allowed? I know on the Atlasrr.com forums EBay linking is forbiden.

Sounds good, I think a slightly off topic form would be a very good idea. I'm sure there are a number of members like myself who have learned a lot about computers and how they work with train-sim, and in general. You may not relize how important a contrubution, You, Otto, Kevin, Cindy, and a number of others, have made, that are slightly off topic.but have greatly made the enjoyment of virtual RR so much better through the knowledge you are willing to share You Have At The Least My Thanks George

Bring it on Macster. I'm all for it. I think we were suppose to have already tried this before, but like any other public forum on the internet, it is easier said than done. It does seem the flaming has gotten out of hand once again, and I have noticed a increase in poorly developed add ons uploaded lately as well, with poorly written read mes, and sometimes no read me at all.Anyway, I have been here for 3 years, and I can honestly say we are much better off now than we were a few years back, but its good to see you guys taking the needed steps to prevent things from getting out of control.Chris Bogley

Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it's probably too bright to see it.

RE: Stricter Rules Coming.....

Because some content I have gotten through PM went beyond "bringing your disputes over to PM." I think people can still hash things out privately through PM without getting the forum folk involved, but also without getting nasty or breaking major rules of the forums themselves. I'm not suggesting the mods "monitor" PMs regularly, but if I get a PM that's way over the limit, I want to be able to report that to the Mods the same way I would report a thread that was over the limit and have something done about it. That's why I'd like to see the "3 strikes, you're out" rule extended to inappropriate PMs as well.

Covering the PMs would be a very good idea. I don't know if Kenyan is banned, but he once sent me a link, an animated gif with sound that said "You are an idiot" over and over. I think it had a virus in it.An OT forum sounds like a great idea, I think the occasional OT makes the forum more enjoyable, and it sure does get annoying when stuff isn't in the correct category. I also think that we should have a forum to report on railfanning trips such as a special run on the 261.I also think it would be good for the links to guidelines to be sent in the e-mail that contains the password. Everyone should try to act right.

I agree that drastic change is needed. I am concerned, however, that this may drive some good people away. There is already a migration in progress to a new forum that was started about a year ago. Unfortunately that forum does not yet have a file library. Many of the really knowledgeable people that used to be here have moved over there. I think you will see more people follow suit.It is unfortunate that a few people in this (general) forum have ruined things for everyone. I post mostly in the route builders forum and for the most part there have not been many problems there. It will be interesting to see what's left after the dust settles.Cal Rasmussen

Cal--I think the "good people" got driven away by the lack of rules, not by their enforcement. Seems like you guys in the route forum take care of your own business!! It's just the "nature of the beast" that only the most hardened dare venture there. . .

RE: Stricter Rules Coming.....

I just got the game out of the bargin bin and found this place. I hope the new rules are applied to all. I have been looking at the different posts here, trying to get a feel for this site and I do not understand why some of the incidents were handled the way they were. I am a moderator in a few forums and can say that none of this would have been tolerated there. They would have recieved an immediate ban, with no appeal. While I do not know of all of Mr. Arceneaux's history on the forums, I can say that the 2 gentlemen who attacked him in the one post would have been banned immediately. I thought Mr. Arceneuax's post was a well thought out post. The other two were not in the topic at all and should have been removed, along with them. They seem to have an axe to grind with Mr. Arceneaux. It seems like favorites were played and that cannot be tolerated from either the moderators or the forum administration. That is the ONLY way to run a forum or else the forum dies.

I'm not going to pretend to know whats going on at the moment...because i have no clue... But if it's anything similiar to what happened awhile back w/ the huge flame wars and the little kids starting stuff...i'm very happy to see this happen...While i wouldn't say i'm a fan of stricter rules...something has to be done about the constant bickering that runs many members off...from my own experience...i'd come ask for help..then leave feeling like an idiot because people would bash me for not knowing...which got old real quick...An off-topic forum would be nice...just to be able to shoot the bull w/ some of the people here...and also..for the train nuts that don't wanna read OT posts..they don't have too...(not that they did before considering the posts have previews on them)...look forward to the changes..you have my support macsterKyle Penn

Basically an " Off Topic " section would allow for the members who don't wanna see anything off topic a section to avoid !!Did that make sense ??PS: OFF TOPIC SECTION = GREAT IDEA !!PSS: Would Train related topics be "removed" from the " Off Topic " section ?

Actually that would be one of the worse things you could put on a forum like this. It would be a cause of major flame wars. If they feel that they are required to start an "off topic" thread, there are many other places on the web that would welcome them. There are too many immature adults and children on this site. This would be a terrible idea.

>topic" thread, there are many other places on the web that

>children on this site. This would be a terrible idea. Years ago, when I ran a BBS, I set up a dedicated conference for just that. Flame away, have your wars in a dedicated "War Room".. Once that was set up, I had very little activity there, there was some; but the bickering and arguing stopped in the main message areas. Once the users relized that their airing of "dirty laundry" would be highlighted for everyone, things calmed down. If an "OFF TOPIC" area is set up here, the flame wars may migrate there, or they may not. I say, give it a chance and if flaming and/or trolling starts, let the new, stricter rules prevail. Ban a few Trolls and send a message that this crap will not be tolerated, and I think you will see things improve. A lot of people have already left and this site is commonly refered to as "FLAME-SIM.COM" on many message boards. I come here primarily for the file library and have found very little useful, imformative information, here in the forums for quite some time. I thinks there are a lot of people who also browse, but ignore most of the meaningless posts that have become a mainstay here. I think the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for me was a Poll put up titled "What hat do you wear when playing MSTS?". Talk about a waste of time, bandwidth and disk space. Steps were taken to eliminate these types of posts and things were better for a while. Rules were put in place to reduce non train related posts and that worked for a little while. Then we started to get the "You stole my design and you better stop or I will burn your house down." posts. If attempts to contact people outside the forums fail, I know that Nels is available and responds to either Private Messages or direct emails. Anyone having a problem with content submitted to the library should take these concerns to the chief, not the entire community. Leave the personality conflicts out of the public arena. Bring the new rules and structure on and let's see if order can be restored. Bill

It's about time someone took control over the bickering and fighting on this site.I'll admit I have had a couple spats but they are long gone now and I have made a couple friends doing it.In the long run complaining about something doesn't always get things done, I should know I had one with NALW, I apoligized for what I did and now everything is Ok with them. The bickering is bad enough if it really has nothing to do with Trains, nobody needs to know other peoples problems or buisness. That's my two cents worth.I have learned my lessons from the problems I created here.http://esketcher.homeip.net/train2.html

1 We need more moderators on site if we are to enforce rules whatever they might be. Two moderators have now gone making monitoring thin on the ground. 2 At least one moderator (with powers) on any one site in any 24 hour period.3 A concerted attempt by everyone not to run down the moderators or the management.Who the new moderators will be I don't know, but I hope there will be a mixture of the young and old.Mike
