Jan-18-02, 11:12 PM (EST) "The Train-Sim Fans" LAST EDITED ON Jan-18-02 AT 11:34 PM (EST)A while back I saw a post for showing what the Train-Fans Looked like with pictures of themselves. Unforuntly since Tuesday this post has disapered, and so I decided to start my own, but here could you leave a brief decripton of yourself.
I am a High School Freshman at Willcox High School in Willcox AZ. At that school I am teased and taunted for being a Railfan, and thretened to be killed by the hispanic Yankee fans because I always wear a AZ D-backs hat and of which I am a fan. I have serious mental troubles because of all the kids taunting me cause I like trains in preschool to this day. Althogh today this has receded It has left me with a split personality that causes me to beat up myself for no reason. I ask that someone actualy replies to this post, unlike some of my two week old ones that have yet to be anserd!

Jan-19-02, 00:16 AM (EST) 1. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-02 AT 00:32 AM (EST)LAST EDITED ON Jan-19-02 AT 00:20 AM (EST)hey man, i know how ya feel, ive been down that same road. not for being a rail fan, but because i was in special education because of my adhd up till 8th grade. i was constantly taunted and teased made fun of for it. they thought i was retarded or something, turns out i was a hell of alot smarter then they were, just a little slower at learning. im in college almost 3 years now as a graphic design major and they are all flipping burgers as highschool dropouts. but it still destroyed a part of me which will never get better. i dont know about u, but i have a severe fear of rejection from all the hell i took as a kid, which explains why i only have 1 friend who was my roomate during my first year of college. i also have a really hard time trusting peopel too. im 21 now and still suffering from it. all the therapy and medications and psychologists and psychiatrists and all that crap that were supposed to "repair" the damage never worked. it really makes me mad at how kids are these days. picking on other kids to the point of mental breakdown because they are different or are interested in certain things. i did manage to find a way to "relieve" some of the pain, it worked for me, it could work for you too. it may seem kind of corny or strange too, but i "vent" with art. i always do paintings, both on canvas and computer that are a reflection of my emotions or feelings at the time. for me, its a great release and doesnt hurt anyone or yourself. it works for me, so it might work for you too. when i read what you go through at school i felt an obligation to write all this since i went thru just about the same thing for 15 years. if you ever need to talk or anything just send me an email or something. im sure there are going to be alot people who are going to "flame" about this but hey who cares. let them flame.
here is an example of some of my released anger, depression, rage, whatever u want to call it.
also to all the parents out there, just in case in u havent, its would be good to sit down with your kids and tell them them how dangerous and permanantly damaging the teasing and taunting of others can be. its just a good suggestion, im not trying to tell anyone how to raise their kids or anything.

Jan-31-02, 03:44 AM (EST) 3. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" Hey RioGrandeDude,Just remember that you're not alone. You have nothing to be ashamed about, people might give you a hard time for being a railfan, but it is a fine and noble hobby. At least one can learn things and enjoy the hobby, while the morons who give you a hard time will never be happy or fulfilled. I used to cop flak for being a fan (that was fifteen years ago) but I've gone on to have a happy life and never looked back, while the people who hassled me have not gone on to anything in life. People don't have to 'follow the crowd', so be happy in your hobby, hold your head high, and know that there are people here who understand. If you want to talk, feel free to e-mail me anytime. Het rio grande, you think you have it hard, that aint nothing. Here in the small southern Arkansas town there is a big racial issue always going on and I catch hell trying to railfan. i get
flipped off, talked about, but I press on. And on top of that,
the police hound me all the time. They think i'm some big time dope mover because I have a nice car and silver teeth. Hey I'm a
log truck driver and if I showed you some of my check stubs you'd see why. But I put it all behind me and go on. I pay them no attention and just railfan. You'll get pushed to the limit sometimes but ya have to know how to control yourself. So press on lil guy, and drop your mug Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-31-02, 02:59 PM (EST) 5. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" RioGrandeDude, don't sweat it..everything will be cool. I graduated in '99 from high school and I'll be honest, I'd give anything in the world to go back and do the whole thing all over again. Trust me, there are worse things to be than a railfan. Kids are just insecure and want to pick on anyone they are jealous of or don't understand. Keep pluggin along and hold your head high. And Jokamotive, I wanted to tell you how much I admire you. Your post was even inspirational for me. Two of my 3 best friends are black and we all grew up in a small northeast Texas town so I understand firsthand the race issues and the police issues. I also just spent a semester at HSU in Arkadelphia. Out of curiosity, where do you live? I'm pretty familiar with the area. Here's me...in all my glory lol.

What again? Oh all right.... Just kidding.
Never let peer presure from the non-believers every sway your goals or what you enjoy. There was a small group of us back in grade school and junior high that were ardent rail fans and we used to take all sorts of heat all the time. Most of the morons that used to do this to us are now either dead, in de-tox or in the can. Never the less, press on. Enjoy railroading or wharever else you choose to enjoy. And stop beating yourself up. People will really think your strange than. Reminds me of the movie Liar, Liar what whats-his-face beat himself up the mens room.... Railnut

Got teased a lot for being a railfan, but my attitude was always F*** em. My brother was more sensitive to that than I was and it caused him problems later on. Get some counseling so this will not affect you later on. Also remember to study hard, excell in whatever you set your mind to then become their boss later on. Living well is the best revenge. Feb-01-02, 06:53 PM (EST) 13. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" Rio Grande Dude'Hey Bud...I can understand where your coming from.I too am a big railfan, but most people(family and friends) don't understand the fascination i have for trains either.I usaully get odd looks,or that typical attitude,like...what-ever!My own twin brother doesn't understand either.as for most of my friends(which are very few).As far as your posts not being answered...join the club(no offense),I've been there ,done that! You can't take it personal dude. There is alot of posts that i don't respond to either. If i don't respond to a peticular post,it's because i usaully don't have any interest in that peticular subject. For instance,if some-one posts a thread about a peticular steam engine...chances are i won't post anything, cause i'm not that interested in old steam trains.Awile back i posted a thread about 2 tank cars that i re-skinned,and didn't get one reply...not one,and these 2 tank cars i happen to spend the most time on!I admit i was kinda discouraged, cause in my opinion they looked reall nice to me.So ended up not up-loading them at all.See how you can let other peoples lack of interest discourage you?Don't let it dude.Every one has their own likes & dis-likes,and i for one am a very "picky" person,as far as what i like. You interests may just be not as admired by most, but don't take it personal. It doesn't matter what everyone else likes or dislikes,as long as your content with what you like, that's all that matters! As far as that Bully at school, just show yourself to be strong, don't let his threats upset you...cowards like that are so insecure about themselves, that they have to take it out on somebody else. But that's his problem!like i said dude, don't take it personal if you don't get alot of reply to your threads...that's life...Oh well, you can't please everybody...take it easy Rio grande Dude! Feb-01-02, 09:31 PM (EST) 14. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" What Mac says is true. I've already told this story to a few folks, but I didn't get hardly any emails about my first route when I first posted it. I was kinda surprised since back in the early days of MSTS there was such a clammor for routes. Now a few folks said some very nice things here and there, and some did email too with the same sentiments, but nuthin' like I thought would happen. I just figured that most folks didn't like what I did. So I figured whatever I did next I would just keep it to myself. But folks were upset after 9/11 and so I uploaded the newer version of the route. Quite a response after that. Funny how things can change for ya when you least expect it.Rich Garber Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-02-02, 03:24 AM (EST) 15. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" Hey R.G.D, I can sympathize with ya guy. I too have been picked on and ridiculed in the past, basically for just being me. I also had a troubled childhood and was sent to a special school when I was a kid, as well as sent to numerous pshychatry sessions (most of the shrinks I was sent to see were, IMHO, whacked-out perverts who were a few bricks short of a load themselves, but that's another story). It seems to me as though most people want to lump railfans into the same category as transvestites, for reasons which surpasseth my level of understanding. I don't understand why society always has to deliver the general message of "Be a sheep and fall in line with the rest of us, OR ELSE!!!" I have been occasioanlly accused of being a non-conformist. In addition to railfanning I have many other hobbies and interests which are somewhat "unique", to say the least. I have NO INTEREST WHATSOEVER in sports or gambling. Most of the friends I have had in the past were of the "fair weather" variety. At the moment I only have one real good friend whom I've known for over ten years now, but I do have a caring and loving girlfirend as well as a loving and nurturing family. I have been teased heckled and, screwed over by a lot of people in the past, many of whom I THOUGHT were my friends at the time. This has somewhat hardened me to the point of where I'm generally happier just being alone most of the time, unless of course I can meet other railfans or like-minded individuals with whom I can have intelligent conversations with! The internet has helped a great deal in making that possible. And I am very greatful for it's existence in more ways than one!Oh yeah, and I'm still digging through all my JPEGS to find a suitable picture of myself. I had a good one of me standing in front of my motorcar that I wanted to put up here, but currently it's nowhere to be found. Don Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Okay here is my pic again. Well I can sympathize with a lot of you guys. I am Bi-Polar ( no I am not reefering to the Milwauke electrics ;_) ) quite severly at that. It has caused me enough problems that I was discharged early from the Marines, and it keeps me from holding a regular job and on disability. I do go out and help people maintain dump trucks on a part time basis to help supplement my income and do as much work as I can given my limitations. I'm hoping that in another year or two I can go back to school full time and hold down a regular job. I am horribly embarrased by the fact that I am on disability for a mental condition and if it wasn't for the anonymity that this forum affords I wouldn't be mentioning it here. I am 24 years old and have to live with my father because I can't afford to live on my own. So don't worry it could be worse. I allways took a fair amount of flak in school for being in band being into trains, etc. I still get a certain amount of ##### for liking certain bands from the 80's (I don't care what anybody says Dokken had some cool tunes). At least we are not alone, it looks like there are a number of us who share a common interest in trains and have had various troubles in life.Just Remember this.

Feb-04-02, 04:35 AM (EST) 18. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" G,day R.G.Dude
Here`s me from down under.
I was picked on at school due to a speech impediment (which fortunatly improved as I grew older) and the fact that I was extremely interested in railways. Both myself and one of my school mates were both rail fans. We used to spend the weekends train travelling and bumming rides on the footplate (still plenty of steam around in those days). I`ve ridden C38s, 36s, Beyer Garrett AD60s, D57s, 30 and 31 class tanks, Mikados, Mountains, you name it. What I`m getting at is I had a mate to share this interest with and that took the sting out of all the ridicule and taunting.
I`m nearly 52 years old and one of my good mates now is also a rail nut. We don`t go chaseing trains much (don`t think the wife would appreciate it) and it`s pretty hard to talk your way into the cab these days.
If anyone taunts or teases you for your beliefs, interests or anything then just think at them `Screw you mate, I`m as good as you, maybe even better. Iv`e got an interest and it`s a damn good one, shared by many fine people all round the world. What have you got?`
As others said earlier in this thread, Hang in there, it does get better.Take care mate,Keith. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-04-02, 04:45 PM (EST) 19. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" I have a great deal of respect and admiration for everyone in this forum and especially this post. I feel lucky as I don't get too much sh*t from people at school, except one of my ex-friends who as of lately has wanted to beat my ass to get to some girl, and has been trying to use the railfan thing against me. I could probably knock the crap out of him (ice hockey player here) but there are other ways to get back at him. That girl has been hitting on me alot this week.......................

Feb-05-02, 02:40 PM (EST) 20. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" Gee, and to think I thought I was the only poor soul picked on in high school! I was picked on because I trashed the Bell Curve, was 'fat' and was (and still is) a MAJOR bookworm. I was called to the principle's office because they were told I was "doing" my history teacher for my straight A's. I got chased home because I was "different." Oh well. Ninety percent of the people who picked on me now have 3.5 kids, are not married and are living on welfare. The other ten percent have fallen off the face of the earth. Funny, now I build and fix computers for a living, am a CompTIA A+ Certified Computer Repair Technician, have a house and a wonderful person at my side (Kudos to you LongHairedWizard). Living well is the best revenge. Just remember, that people who pick on you because you're different are either plain stupid or are jealous. I found out, after 15 years, the person who picked on me the most was jealous because the teachers liked me. She was a snot anyway. This is me....

Feb-07-02, 04:40 AM (EST) 22. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" I've always liked cars too, but there were hardly any gearheads in my high school. And railfans were NIL. 99.99% of the student body were dumb ol' jocks that were'nt interested in anything except babbling incoherently about this NFL team or that NBA player, which meant (and still does mean) ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to me. Now college was a little different as I went through a marine engineering program. Still got picked on there too, but at least most of those guys were gearheads and a few at least new SOMETHING about trains. Hell the school even had a 567C for us to play with! Feb-08-02, 08:02 PM (EST) 23. "RE: The Train-Sim Fans" I've been into trains since I was three, I was given an American Flyer set in 1947, and because of my enjoyment of trains, my life has been much richer. I have fired steam locos, spent three years driving an NW-2 on summer weekends, been a member of several model railroad clubs, and a life member of the NMRA. I have been fortunate enough to meet some of the finest people you would ever want to know, simply because I like trains. I'm 57 now, and trains, in one form or another, have given me more spare time hobby type enjoyment than any other thing that I have done, and I have done many different things. If you don't know anyone that likes trains, find a model railroad club, or a local chapter of the national railways historical society. Keep in mind that you are not alone. everyone here enjoys trains, or they wouldn't be here, and we are all going through the same problems with learning this program that you are going through. As long as railroading is your hobby, you will never stop learning, never stop building, and never be bored.oboe Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Not to many of my friends really understood my love for railroading not even my wife understands to this day. After my first cab ride on the Frisco I WAS HOOKED!!!!. We had a HO model railroad in our garage which I operated by using actual switch list and Train orders. I whould sneek up to our local Depot and spend time listening to the Agents stories about the good old days.
The way I see it is ENJOY YOUR CHOSEN HOBBY so what if no one understands. It is your release, it is an great ecsape from life which can be tough at times. I used it to survive my MOM and DAD'S 1st divorce. Your Fellow RAILROADER Dave. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
