Jan-13-02, 00:55 AM (EST) "3d graphics cards for MSTS" What happened to the guru3d.com site? This site contained reviews on all of the recent graphics cards. I am upgrading my card for MSTS, and I would like to replace the card with one that has good reviews and not too expensive. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Your prices look to be at least double ours here in the States... I wonder how much of that is the exchange rate????From the other place they sent all the Irishmen and Kriminals!------Chuck Schneider---------

Jan-16-02, 10:10 AM (EST) 6. "RE: 3d graphics cards for MSTS" My current computer configuration will only support a 2x agp card. If I get a 4x agp card, would there be any problems getting it to work? What about using a 2x/4x card? I may get a new system, at which time I would be able to get a more recent card as part of the configuration. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-16-02, 05:14 PM (EST) 7. "RE: 3d graphics cards for MSTS" G'day cbrookhart,Good to see your doing your home work.
This is in answer to your last post. Sorry I'm a bit long winded to answer this, but its hard to put it all into one line if someone is rather new to the insides of PC's.My system is a PIII-850mhz (100mz) cpu on an old Gigabyte AT-Baby 100mz motherboard and is only a 2x AGP. I have a 64meg GeForce2 GTS installed on this board, and if I wanted to, I could put in the latest GeForce3 and it will still work okay. But, the GeForce3 on my system would be a complete OVERKILL and a complete waste of hard earnt cash, for what I would get from the GeForce3, with my slightly less than mid-range PIII-850mhz cpu. It would go okay but only slightly better. The GeForce3 needs a matched high end CPU to go with it.
CPUs must be matched to the Video card for best performance and vice versa.
If you like, please read through my post for ideas from others who answered my original post "More BASIC FRAME RATES" or click here:- http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID1/686.html
Save this page to your hard drive and read through it OFF-line. There is a lot in it.Of course, IF there was a program written that needed 4x Agp to run, I guess there would be a slight bottleneck. But I'm not too sure here, but I had not read of any programs that are written specially for 4x AGP yet.You do not state what your system is presently running, BUT.....If you want to do it on the cheap, then upgrade your VID card only, it does not matter if it's 4x AGP it will work fine.
But running a low end CPU with a High end 3D Video card is definately not the way to go. BUT if your thinking of a NEW system, like say a P4 or AMD Athlon then your system motherboard would be a 4x AGP anyway, so get your preferred 3d card you would like with it already installed. There is NO real cheap way of doing things with computers. You either upgrade when the latest technology is about to drop off, so you get best bang for you buck, which leaves you slightly behind the latest whizz bang gear, OR, pay through the nose for the new stuff when it hits the shelves.
Remember, as soon as you buy it, it is old hat. Hmmm a true "Never Ending Story", see,,, it's not fantasy. My old system is a PIII-850mhz with my GeForce2 GTS card and I run MSTS with everything full on. Normal train driving MSTS is reasonable frames, but at times does get down to 8 frames in very high graphic areas, but is still drivable. I prefer to put up with that, so I can have the full scenery. Drop the "Best Graphics slider" back one notch and I loose a bit of scenery and the frames are always okay.Hope this helps you.Message Areas - "3d graphics cards for MSTS" – image 3 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-21-02, 10:41 AM (EST) 9. "RE: 3d graphics cards for MSTS" Does MSTS have any support for a 4x agp card? Where could I find out what games do offer 4x support? The only way that I can run MSTS right now is to check all the boxes in the troubleshooting utility. I would like to be able to see better frame rates, and more importantly, I would like to be able to run MSTS without the game freezing up and then eventually the computer freezing. Jan-21-02, 10:45 AM (EST) 10. "RE: 3d graphics cards for MSTS" 4x is a hardware thing! Games and software are "x" un-aware.LOL
The difference in performance between 2x and 4x using current operating systems and benchmarks has been shown to be minimal.... This has been postulated to be because the average 3d Card has 32mb of Texture memory and that is sufficient to hold the scene textures for most games....
note: the 2x and 4x refer to data transfer rates on the AGP bus... Think of it as DDR and Double DDR....------Chuck Schneider---------
