Hi folks...Since I bug everyone with my signature (which is actually more for myself to keep me motivated), I thought it might be good idea to let you know about my topic, because it is an interesting one. It also makes it possible for me to give you guys an idea of a totally new (transport) business and maybe a kickoff for a new career...Enjoy...Imagine: Far out at sea, like white ghosts they turn, the Wind Turbine Generators! Producing clean energy for thousands of households. The erection of those beasts at sea is a major undertaking and not easy to accomplish. And this is my topic.Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

Uh-huh? And like, they've been around for quite some time, whats your point? We got coal and oil! what do we need wind for?I say we exhaust one nature reserve at a time and then think about wind power. J/K or hippies might attack me. (But I do like that crane in the pics though. )/JonatanSteam rules!

RE: OT: My thesis

>We got coal and oil! what do we need wind for?<Now I'm not a typical Treehugger, but I think that we should not completely exhaust all fossil fuel. Just think of the millions of years it takes to form oil. While I do support Wind Power, and in regions with suitable weather, Solar Power, I personally think that the future should belong to Nuclear Power. I agree Chernobyl was a terrible accident, but Hey, how do you excpect a backup system to work, if the diesel opwering it doesn'T have fuel (it was branched of for trucks and private cars)Furhtermore, new Reactor types are becoming available, which have an even lesser risk of meltdown. The problem is that thanks to som eco-terrorists the mere word nuclear has gotten such a negative connotation that research in those fields is almost impossibleGreetings from FrankfurtThomas

Yeah, nuclear power is something you should have respect for. It's an (allmost) endless source of energy and very clean (exept the waste) and efficient. It's sad to see that it has gotten so bad reputation, the cooling tower has become a very strong symbol with the nuclear power haters. It is NOT only nuclear plants that use them, take a look at your nearest coal power plant, what do you see? a bunch of cooling towers belching steam./JonatanSteam rules!

I'll probably get many a rolled eye for this but I believe in the bright (pun intended) future of nukular, err, nuclear fusion.Much safer and more efficient than fission. Now if only they could make it work... all in due time though. Tim Frost

RE: OT: My thesis

Fusion does work. The British experimental plant recently managed, for the first time, to produce more power than it required to start before it had to be shut down. They just need to work out the minor problem how to manage 3000 degrees celcius of heat, a temprature you'd probably find on the sun's suface. The best thing about fusion is that no Uranium is required. Deuterium is the stuff that fuses. Not only does this produce much less waste for much more power - one plant could theoretically power a small country - but deuterium is found in common seawater, where it makes up about 1 part in every 7000. And its about impossible to run out of seawater. OT: My thesis – image 12

I live with in range of one of the most disputed Nuke plants in the USA, Do I worry about it? Nope. why? because I'm quite aware of how nuke power works, knowledge is power, And thats the prob, most of your eco-terrorists dont take the time to study the subject, just go with the group and say nuke is bad, I support Nuke Power, I think Nuke power will make a comeback too, BTW Jonatan, Indian point has no cooling towers, It uses the hudson river to cool

Yup, they just say it's bad.I think that it's the cooling towers that make the plant, it makes it recognizable, and looks cool too. I built a monster plant in MSTS with over 16 coolers for 4 reactors. But if there is a river nearby, why waste money on building coolers?Wind power is good too, so is tidal power and hydro electric dams. But I like coal plants, with the many stacks and black smoke. (Black smoke is something I've got a thing for as it's associated with steam trains.) Oil plants are cool too. I like the structures of the plants and I build scale models of them in cardboard./JonatanSteam rules!

"But if there is a river nearby, why waste money on building coolers?"The answer is simple, cooling towers are used to cool the water that is use to condense the steam after it has passed through the turbine. It is true that you could take river water, run it through the condenser and return it to the river. On the surface it sounds great. The problem is the temperature of the water coming out of the condensor is 20-30 degrees warmer than the the water going in. Putting this warm water back into the river in large quantities is very harmful to the ecology of the river. This has nothing to do with radioactivity. It is a simple matter of temperature.Cal Rasmussen

RE: OT: My thesis

Shawn
The problem also lies in the fact that a good portion of the vocal eco twits that call for all these alternitave power sources turn on those once they start being implemented.
Some eco twits are currently on the rampage regarding wind generators (in California IIRC) because birds fly into the blades and are killed(they've taken to calling them Condor Cuisenarts(sp?)) and there are plans to build an offshore wind plant on Long Island Sound(IIRC)that a whole batch of "enviromentaly concerned" celeberaties are complaining about most prominently one of the Kennedy clan(been several months so I'm having a bit of trouble remembering)who made a point of going around to various media outlets during the build up to and during major combat in Iraq saying how we needed to sacrifice our SUV's, massively increase taxes on oil products and impliment draconian conservation policies(but of course don't even think about drilling for more here)in order to ween the American public off foreign oil but let someone suggest wind turbines ten miles offshore from him and forget it.
Unfortunately be it oil, coal nuke or any other source these "watermelons"(green on the outside, very red on the inside)are going to object because the only thing that will make them happy is all of us living a sparse existance with of course "the enlightened class"(themselves)leading usGary S

That's quite interesting, what degree will the thesis be for?I'm about to start researching my thesis for my Master of Urban and Rural Planning degree (i'm studying a commuter rail option in Halifax - well actually Dartmouth - Nova Scotia). One of my classmates is studying wind turbines (of the ground based variety) and how the public participation process has afected their implmentation across Nova Scotia (or something to that extent, can't remember the details of all of my classmates' topics!)Best of luck with your research, it can be a painful experience

You can never satisfy those eco-terrorists.Wind power is a good clean source of energy, but you have to have sustainable wind all the time, the same goes for solar power except it has to be sunny all year long.Of course there nuclear power and because of the fearmongering by these eco-terrorists. If safety and proper maintenance is taken care of there would be no problems at such facilities.Coal is still around and is a dirty source of power, improvements had been made to make coal burn a bit cleaner.and as long there are rivers there will be dams and the provide the hydro-electric power many of us enjoy (except the costs). And there is Thermal power, we have a plant here in Port Moody, BC and I believe that power goes to the US.AS you see there are options, and each should be looked at, depending on the area.We must be diverse in the use of natural resources.Fear is one of the biggest weapons around, because it has a psychological effect on the masses, and the word nuclear is one of those words that causes fear.As it has been said knowledge is power. It would be like saying rail travel is bad because of the fear of derailments. Things like this and nuclear accidents, aircraft crashes, car crashes are mostly human errors.
Take that factor out and things are going good.Don't let fear rule your life.

Same story here on the East coast of Canada. It's rarely not windy even at the beach, nevermind a few KM off shore.
