Was just wondering about the tycoon part of it. I saw it in stores tonight, and I guess it has more sim features, which I am really not interested in, but I wanted to know what it was like as far as a monopoly type game for trains. Any thoughts?Chris Bogley

I think it is a internet type game, where you can play others, so I might have to buy it just to whip up on you! Let me know how you like it.Chris Bogley

"I Challenge you to a dual!!" hehehe - if you watch the Simpson’s you will know what I mean.
That would rock if we could have a game, some of us from these forums. I gotta get myself a copy when I get back from holidays next month! I read Hawk's comments and I am amazed by the game. And finally, you can build tunnels and overpasses!!!

RE: Railroad Tycoon 3...Anybody have it? Thoughts?

I got it yesterday.Very good program overall... nice business simulation and economy model. Traffic flows vary according to supply and demand, and demand varies from location to location. Other modes of transport are simulated in the background... some products might be moved to your railroad by some other means (truck, barge, etc.) and transloaded to rail.Since the traffic flows change so frequently, the game has a feature which will assign the most profitable cargos to your trains. So your freights might have a wide variety of cars, just like on the prototype! And the consists vary from run to run! Just select the cities you want your train to serve, and the sim does the rest. You can also customize the consist if necessary (in case you like unit trains...). Unfortunately, you're limited to 8 cars per train. You can zoom the camera down to a very fine level of detail, almost like virtual railfanning! I'll post some screenshots if I can get around to it.About the only beef I have with it is that the grades in the land are very exaggerated... the track ends up looking like a roller coaster when viewed close up. Also, it would have been cool if you could design your own logo and paint scheme. For us modern diesel fans, the locomotive selection is disappointing... a P40/P42 for passenger service, and an SD90MAC (called "NA-90D" in the sim, don't ask me why) for freight. An SD40-2 would have been terrific. Here are my suggestions for RRT4 (if there ever is such a thing):
- More realistic cargo types (auto parts, for one!)
- Longer trains
- Classification yards
- Intermodal service
- More modern diesels!I don't intend to disappoint anyone or sound like I'm picking the game apart. It's the best railroad business simulator yet... you should get it!!!

Heard somewhere that you may be able to edit game textures similar to the way we do it in MSTS. Looking at screenshots I don't like the look of that yellow and black big boy!-Paul

Got an email from Amazon yesterday telling me they shipped it. When I came home, I found the envelope lying on my floor (the postman threw it through my open window ).Played all evening, forgot about time...
A GREAT GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!EDIT: I played RRT since it first came out as a pixely game for DOS. It was on one floppy disc and displayed 16 colours. It had a neat copy check. It said, identify the loco on page xx in the manual. Since I got a copy from a friend (psst!), I never had a manual, but since I am railfan, I knew about every loco anyway, so it wasn't that hard!Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

I also have the original RRT. Excellent game. Gameplay is pretty solid in the original, even by todays standards. (in my opinion, anyway) I did get RRT2 but didn't enjoy it as much as the original. I will most likely pick up RRT3 at some point, but with MSTS here these days, I just don't think I'm gonna have the time for Tycoon anymore. EDIT: Changed "had the original" to "have the original" ... still got it and will never part with it.

RE: Railroad Tycoon 3...Anybody have it? Thoughts?

PopTop is working on providing the ability to add "skins" to existing models and some new scenarios, for free to download. Not available yet though. Most are VERY large US maps and a few more European ones. They'll require a good deal of horse power to play on though.PopTop is also interested in providing a way to get users and option of adding models as well. That's not going to happen real quick though. Hopefully by Q2 2004.S90Mac was renamed like the AMD103 was because of trademark issues. RT3 trains can burn, some companies aren't real keen on that. Some models were completely removed from the game before release as well.RT3 is a game; however PopTop hopes that Sim players will find a level of use as well. The scale is adjustable too, so if you wanted to do a VERY detailed area of say 200 by 200 miles you could get MUCH more detail than the games default maps are made. Additionally, RT3 has about 4 times the detail as RT2 did for the same area, so scale isn't as abstract. RT3 also has a sandbox mode if you are just interested in moving cargo and don't want to worry about finance.Anyway, just saying hi! HI!

I have RRT2 Gold - have spent hundreds of hours playing it - I prefer the scenarios where the emphasis is on building viable railroads moreso than stock market manipulation and financial chicanery. You can download a demo of RRT3 at the Poptop site...Tim Baldwin

I have only seen the commercials. The train speeds on there reminds me of how they run lionel trains at a show.
